Sent my Dad the link to the Lancaster Natedog posted for us. As he grew up in Scotland during the war and his oldest brother Pete,my uncle was with the RAF as ground crew i though he would like to see the Lanc.
He played in the bomb craters, blown out buildings & bomb shelters. Has seen the Spitfire,Hurricans and heard the sounds of war.He flys one of my WB accounts & during the day when im at work he flys AH. He likes the Spit, seen them as a boy and has allways been facinated with WWII aviation. Prolly where i get it from.
I forgot about the old News Reels.Partly propaganda but mostly true.
Ive cut and paste my Dads reply on the Lancaster.
Hi, Drew: Got your Aces High web page with the Lanc. They were one tough plane to shoot down during WW II.They could fly back from Germany with chunks of the plane shot away. We used to see newsreels of them coming in for landings after sorties over Europe, and it still baffles me how these planes could fly with so many parts blown away. The Lanc. B.Mk I Special carried the 12,000 lb. "Tallboy", and were modified to
carry the 22,000 lb. "Grand Slam", which was use to penetrate the concrete encased U-Boat pens. Nice page. Catch you later. Dad.
I havent seen my Dad much over the last 25 years for a number of reasons, but i have every intention of going home for Xmass this year and taking him out to the bar to pry a few Stories outa him.
What some of you may not know is that they followed the exploits of RAF pilots on the radio like we do our Sports Stars on TV. He told me about this last year, started off about an Irish Fighter pilot the women just loved & listened on the radio about his sorties.
Dog out......
