Miata / Datsun race video
« on: August 13, 2003, 12:46:42 AM »
I think this video is pretty cool.  It's a Miata driver chasing a 240Z around a track (some red M3 can be seen skidding off the track.)  I love the sound of those high revs and like watching the driver's steering and you can see him catch a small bit of oversteer.  The video was found on a Z forum and the Z driver later chimed in and said:
"I'm proud to say that Z (the "Rusty Old Datsun") is mine! Horsepower numbers are about equal for both cars because the Flyin' Miata guys were running their spare 300+ horsepower motor by the time the OTC got to Buttonwillow."

Just noticed there are more films on that page.

Heh Moose.. the early RX-7 say early 80's with the 12b rotary's are equal to the MX-5. The 90's version of the RX-7 is no compairison Those are bing monsters.. I hear some guy has put a T-72 Turbo on his RX-7 eeegads that thing must fly!

FM's(Fly'n Miata') Tack Dog is a sweet ride. I'm waiting to get their stroker kit once they get all the bugs out.  I have this thing for a 200hp NA motor for my Miata. Which would be the ideal power for the car.  But, it looks like I may go Supercharged a lot cheaper conversion :D

Nuch,

Do you race on the track?  I was watching that video (and found a bunch of others) and was thinking what a thrill that must be!
Is the Supercharged engine 200hp?  I know it's a light car, but that doesn't sound like much.  I'm dropping a turbo engine into my NA ZX probably Sept/Nov (after quarterly taxes are paid) and increasing the boost (I guess stock, the boost is set very conservatively) and then taking her back to tune her up for more power and possibly looking into an intercooler and even more boost.  (Unclear regarding the legality of intercoolers on my car in CA...I heard there is one or two legal in all 50 states.)

That racing thing sure looks like a fun hobby.  But I know I'd kill myself.

Puke,

At the moment I have not tracked this car. I do Autocross and seem to be doing well in my class.  The car is pretty much stock, minus the exhaust/intake, and tires.

I'm waiting to get my 15" stock rims back. I have them out on loan right now. But those will get some Khumo Victorracer tires.  Which are a roadrace tire for autocrossing. And my koni shocks and springs.

Superchargers come in several stages 1,2,3. If/when I go forced induction. I'll have a stage 1 kit at 6-10lbs of boost. Which will put 175hp at the rear wheels.  Which is plenty of tire smoking fun :)

Right now, lates test on the dyno jet was 119 hp 109lbs of torque @ 7200 rpm. Sock spec is 110 hp and 105 lbs. @ 7200 rpm.  Not much real gain in the way of mod's.

BTW, the new RX-8's ar not dynoing very well. Very well under the factory spec's.  Mazda's claiming its a safty break in and the cars will spec up to dyno. But Mazda will not let us know how many miles have to be on the car.

nuch you have an -8?

Yeah, the rx8 guys are hemming and hawing about whats going on. Rumor mill says the fuel maps arent right, which would make sense/tie into your story about safety breakin. Maybe the ecu reprogramms the maps after 5k miles?

No I don't Moose.  I don't plan to buy that thing untill they put a turbo in it.

Mazda had that same problem with the 01 Miata's saying they had 155 HP, in turn the cars were dynoing 110 hp which works out to be about 142hp.  Mazda bought back lots of 01's

Ford also had the same problem with the Cobra Mustange's.  See a trend here?!??!

I will not believe it till I see one dyno the right amount of power.
