Thoughts on newbies and wingmen......
« on: September 20, 2000, 06:57:00 AM »
I wanted to express something I thought might help newbies somewhat.

In WB and AH, I do fly for an organized squad, vadr's III/JG2 (3 of us here), but not being an on-line personae or highly social individual, most of the time when I'm on AH in the Main Arena, I end up flying all alone unless a squad mate happens to be there.  This generally works well for me as I can come and go from the arena as I please and don't have to deal with a whole bunch of structure and orders etc.  It's downside is you have to pay real attention to your SA and always fight only with the philosophy of "My Time, My Terms, My Ground".  It does get a little boring at times due to the lack of social interaction with the community, but I experienced something the other night that gave me another option to heighten the simulation enjoyment.

I ran into a pair of bad guys above me, which was very unusual.    There was a P47 and P38 at 35k headed for a group of our guys who were much lower.  Westy happened to be in the neighborhood and noticed I was outnumbered and hollered he was on his way.  I danced with these two until he arrived and we began a great 2 versus 2 fight using intuitive wingman tactics, even though we're not in the same squad and hardly know each other.  He's a super virtual pilot and reads the "in...out" wingman patterns very naturally.  He focused on the JUG (he was also in a JUG) and I went after the P38.  I got lucky and bagged him, then turned back to check Westy.  Apparently westy had got the better of the ACM in his 1vs1, as he was now on the six of the other JUG, who was running for the deck and headed home for his flak cover.  I stayed parallel but high, in order to cover westy as he continued his pursuit into the bad guy's homeland.  After some T&B down low while I stayed up on a perch watching for any support the bad guy might get coming in, westy nailed his hide and turned for home.  He had damage and was vulnerable down low, so I said I'd walk him home with cover, but joked it didn't mean we were going steady.   All in all, it was great fun with an outstanding pilot whom I hardly knew.  The wingman concept changes your way of thinking as you now have to deal with SA that covers both yours and his buns.  It also permits engaging in fights that you would normally run from if alone.

My point is, I think I've been missing something obvious I could do on-line to add enjoyment to the game.  Periodically, anyone could simply ask on country channel if there's anyone else who would like to wing up.  I think if a new player, who most likely hasn't even joined a squad yet, was able to fly wing in the MA with a more experienced pilot, it would both improve their enjoyment of the game, plus they might die less often during the learning curve stage.  The result, perhaps a two week trial player who signs up permanently due to a positive experience with the flying and the community.

In any event, just wanted to share that experience.  If there's any new players who'd like to try this, then just check for the "old badger" on-line and it would my pleasure to fly your wing and die gloriously together.  Heck, the same applies to the vets.  If you'd like to spend time keeping me out of deep "ca ca", then just holler and we'll go "pick a fight" someplace.

Regards,
Badger

So true, Badger. I've had these kind of feelings also. Very quickly since coming to AH at the end of May I developed an urge to fly with a wingman. I'm tired of dying alone..
Wingman (w/RW) makes your flight much more effective and enables you to use planes and tactics otherwise unwise.
Last week I flew a few times with Jarsci from LLv 34 and it was the most fun time I've had in several weeks. We were both on RW and cooperation was impeccable. Impressive kill streaks were possible (Jarsci getting more since he was usually the lead, and prolly a better pilot)     and we were allmost allways coming back alive.
One thing I noticed, however, was that you do not want too many pilots on the same RW channel. With Jarsci we were continually talking to each other; what we were doing, what the enemy was doing, what we wanted the other guy to do etc. With more pilots the channel quickly gets crowded, and less info can be passed.
If you like, I'll wing w/u any time, Badger.

Doesn't surprise me at all, Badger. Westy is a first-rate pilot and online personality.

Guys like him(and you) are why I still play online games.

Great story Badger.

And so true.  I find when I am flying with someone I have far more fun than flying alone.

Sometimes I buff and had the occasion to buff the other night, when JoeMud popped on the country channel asking if any buff was up and wanted a gunner.
Most buff pilots prefer to gun for themselves, but I prefer to have someone else gun for me when I buff, so I told JoeMud to hop aboard.

We had a blast.  During the long arduous climb to alt for the target, we joked and kidded around.  Joe took down several fighters while I dropped the load on the target.  Afterwards, he would direct me as he gunned.  We almost took a Yak out by sneaking up on his 6!  The pilot of that bird later said, "that would have been embarrassing, outflown by a buff.."

It was a blast.

In the other story I told here, it was the other pilots in the scenario that pulled me in the game/sim more than anything else.

I concur with you Badger.  It always has been more fun for me, to be able to fly with others than by myself.

Well of course Badger... Westy is a **MOL**

Seriously   I agree with your sentiments totally. Having a good wingman who knows how to handle the switch off is worth his weight in gold.

I do have to say that is one area our squad (MOL's), is very good at, wingman tactics. Its not so much training or even superior skill, its how the pilots mesh together and a sense of timing between us.

The other night Westy, LLBM, and myself had a similar occurence where flying together on RW we engaged at least twice our number and won rather easily, due to superior coordination.

Its a great feeling to be able to count on a good wingman/squaddie when the lead starts flying

<blush> I'm not used to having my "handle" mentioned in such a nice light    Thank you gentlemen - very much. I took took the honor to heart and I appreciate very much your lattering words.

I really enjoyed that flight with you Badger. I've been tryin to work on my wingamn habits and it feels like it is paying off some what. I get alot more satisfaction from working with an ally online than I do just buzzing into or thru a furball picking off an enemy bogy that is concentrating on someone else other then me. I always look to participate in an action online with people for that that is the core of my online enjoyment. I could easily "LoneWolf" to my hearts content flying European AirWar offline but I would miss (very much so) the social interaction we get from fighting with or against each other in our virtual skies.

Here's to a repeat performance. Soon I hope! <raises cup of coffee in salutation> )
