Anyone know if red/green color blindness disqualifies one from service?

My son is going to a recruiter this week. He's already been disqualified for the Army Military Police because of his color blindness.

I'm trying to prepare just in case he's disappointed again.

He could get accepted into the military, but would be severely limited on what he could chose for a job.

Well, I think anyone would know that both red and green are very important colors when it comes to the navy.

as far as i know being colour blind is still a 4F (disqualification) in the military. (my good friend got turned away in the early 80's because of that) btw he still watches tv on a B&W ...

I'm pretty sure you can serve with red-green.  I know you can't fly though.  :(

This is correct.  You can get in, you just have limited career choices.

There are good opportunities in the Army Medical Corps for folks who are color blind. (no kidding)

I can find out the "no-recruiter BS" details if he's interested.

As being one of the color blind types.  Yes he can get into the C.G./Navy or AF.  He'll be a paper pusher or something along those lines. I chose not to go in because they would not let me do electronic's. (Here I am doing logistcal crap now)

As I'm red/green it made it fun in college, but I worked thought my disablity and I have a B.S. in Electronic Engineering Tech.

It depends how bad it is, I am slightly blind in some shades of the red/green spectrum - disqualified for the airforce but easily qualified as a grunt for four years and another 8 years in the reserves. Having said that all you had to be able to do was run, shoot, swim and jump out of moving vehicles at a variety of speeds and altitudes....oh and dig holes...lots and lots of holes.

I just a FYI, there is a corrective process that can be done using contact's. If you ware them however, it's pretty costly and the chances are 50/50 for correction. I had some a year ago and there is a difference with and with out.

Sad thing is their like 250-500 bucks.. with out ins. :(  And we just changed ins co's and this new ins. co. will not pay for them as they are considered experimental.

I am partially Color Blind and was in the Coast Guard. The answer is Yes he can join. He will be given a Page 7 (I belive) entry in his Service Record. If he can pass a Falant Test (like looking at a very small traffic light with Red, Green and White lights) he can strike(like OJT without going to Spec School) for Boatswain's Mate if approved by his CO andThe Commandant of the CG. Otherwise he can be a Cook, Musician or Yomen. The only catch is you have to join first. Belive NOTHING the recruiter tells you. Mine told me it was no problem, and it wasn't untill it was time for Spec School. I wasted a year waiting on school when I could have been striking for my rating.

Who said there was corrective lenses for that?

color blindness is caused by your eyes NOT having enough color receptors (or in those pure color blinds, none at all) in the back of your eyes. No lenses on earth will fix that. You literally need a whole new set of eyes.

OIO there IS corrective lenses for that available, but they are VERY expensive and only work in certain cases. Here's a WebMD Article.
