Question for AH players from Germany
« on: August 23, 2003, 01:13:38 PM »
Guten Tag!

Guys I am doing some research for our squadron - Is there still a squadron in the Modern Luftwaffe that carries the title "UDET"?
Seems I read that there was one. Would like to find out what JG currently carries the title if there is one.

Tks in advance. !

Its the last name of Ernst Udet, a flying ace from WWI who flew for Germany.

Hey Flyboy!

Go to our squad website (Link under my signature) and click on "JG 3's NAMESAKE" - it will explain all.

Don't forget to sign the guestbook while you are there!  ;)

Is Udet the one who was put in charge of aircraft production for Hitler? And  didn't he commit suicide because he hated the job so much? Or somethin like that.

Ernst Udet was quite a character.
A bon Vivant, adventurer, humourist, flying Ace and a decent comics drawer, - also a Party monster and heavy drinker.
He was a bit unhappy about the business, and had a lot of conflicts with other leading characters, such as Göring (They could usually level things out with a drink and old tales from WWI) and Erhard Milch (a bastard that one)
Uded commited suicide, blaming things on Göring (wasn't the suicide note something like "Iron man, you betrayed me")
He was buried with full honors, but however, on the way to (or was it from?) his funeral, Werner Mölders crashed to his death.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Gulbert's list is actually Geschwadern (wings).  I wonder if there are any Staffeln (squadrons) with the Udet name or symbol?
