Help understanding the Wind info on the MAP
« on: November 29, 2001, 02:14:00 PM »
has a compass cross (N,E,S,W) and at each point it has a speed and alt.

Questions is, how do you tell which way the wind is blowing? Or is it blowing in the direction that the info is on? (ei. if the 2K and 10km wind is on the N, is the wind blowing N?) That would mean wind is blowing in 4 different directions, each alt having it's own direction. Is this right or am i on drugs.

Just curious on how we need to read the wind layers icon.

thank you.

It would seem more intuitive to have the arrow point the same way the wind is blowing, like a windsock.  The arrows on the new map seem just the opposite from this.

i think what is most odd, is that there are 4 different wind layers (which is ok), but each layers direction is to different. In other words, you have a wind at 2K blowing North, then at 8K you have a wind that is blowing East, then at 14K you have a wind that is blowing Wesst, then at 20K the wind is blowing South. What i'm saying is that the wind has to drastic of a difference in direction. Shouldn't they all be somewhat similar? Maybe like: 2K North, 8K North East, 14K North North West, 20K West. This way it would seem the weather would be coming from the South and moving in a Northerly direction. Would seem more natural to me, unless of course wind layers are actually in drastically diffrerent directions at those altitudes, i'm not a weather man, just curious here.

The only reason i could see them as is, is becuase of fairness in game play and the "world" being 256 or 512 miles across.

any other ideas or input?

I have seen some fairly drastic wind differences at various altitudes on the weather forecasts that we get before we fly here in Pensacola.  For example, recently we had winds on deck from the South of about 10 knots. At 7000 feet the winds were 220 at 18 knots. At 9000 feet the winds were 280 at 30 knots.  I didnt check the winds above 9k since we werent flying above that but I am sure that they were much stronger and from some other direction above 20,000 feet.

I think the four wind directions is fine, and useful, as is. What I mean is, if you're looking for a tailwind, you can get it, by going to the alt range that will give you the tail wind. So, it's like we've been given some bonus groundspeed in this version, accessed by going to the appropriate alt.

As for winds on landing, depending on the alt of the field you're landing at, you might encounter some challenging crosswinds. When I first flew the new version, crosswinds caught me by surprise on my first landing (I was unaware that wind had been added, hadn't read the readme file). I ended up ripping off my gear, and got a ditch out of it.

mason22:

yeah the wind can blow in differant derections at differant alts. as well you can have no wind at say 2500 feet and then at 2000fett hit very choppy winds that rock you all over the place. I learn about this stuff a little bit when I was skydiving. I think the wildest ride I had was about a 5 mile an hour wind from 2500 feet to about 1000 feet, then as I went below 1000 feet to about 400 feet, the winds where gusting from about 15 mph to 30 mph, (Not positve on exact wind speeds) and was very choppy, canopy was shaking and jolting all over the place, made for a very scary ride untill dropping below 400 feet and back into the calmer winds.

But in answer to your queston, yes the wind speeds and derections can change from one alt to another alt. hope this helps.
