Gameport bad?
« on: September 01, 2003, 08:22:28 PM »
Have been playing around with a "new" system I got from a squaddie, and am in LOVE with it.  Except for one thing:
I had an OLD SB AWE64 sound card on my old system, and I used it to run my TM Elite pedals with my Saitek X45.
Now, on this system, I installed joyregs and all the other stuff I needed to make it work on the old one, but it always shows "Not Connected".
The new system has a SB Live! Gamer.....looking in "System" and under Devices, it shows the gameport to be working okay, but no joy I hook anything at all up to it.
I took the pedals and hooked them up to the old system, and sure enough, they showed to be working on it.
Is it possible that the gameport connection went bad or something?
There is a world of difference between the old sound card and the new one when it comes to AH.  Now, I feel like I am "there"...much more realistic.
If I can just figure out what to do to make these pedals work........looked in the resources and there were no conflicts, so I am stumped.
Anyone got any ideas?

You going to be there tommorow Eddie? I'm going to Pampa and can stop by around 9- 10ish in the morning and see what I can do. Or I can stop by on my way back which would be around 6.

Call me in the morning, Estes.
I have to be in Amarillo to take a refresher course for my job.
Far as I know, I'll be here.

What type of system is this?

One thing I can think of is that nForce 2 chipset based motherboards can only support their own built on gameport, which means that add on soundcards that have a gameport on them won't have functional gameports.  (The nForce 2 chipset is not the only new chipset like this.)  If it is an nForce 2 chipset based motherboard you will have to use the gameport that came with the motherboard (usually on a bracket).

Athlon 2100+ XP
Epox 8rda motherboard
512 MB PC2100 DDR Crucial Ram
30 Gig 7200 RPM HDD
Geforce Ti4200 w/64MB
Soundblaster Live! X-Gamer

Yup, it is an NForce2 chipset on the mobo.

On the owner's manual, it shows a gameport, but since I got this used, I do not have the gameport bracket and all that.
Am I screwed?

Went to a local computer repair shop and paid them $1.50 for a 16-pin gameport and cable.
Installed that, now my rudder pedals work again!  :D
Was getting tired of driving GV's all the time.......now I've regained my wings!

Thanks for the tip, bloom25!  I was sure it was the gameport on the sound card.......had completely forgotten about the nForce2 chipset issues.

I had a hunch that was the issue.  This is getting to be a fairly common limitation of newer chipsets.  (They can only support one gameport.)
