Possibly the worst case of military negligence

http://www.simonpure.com/leftto.htm

Destroyer is torpedoed, task force too afraid to pick them up, sails away.  2 days later, U.S. army aircorp plane spots them, pilot reports "men in the water".  Report ignored.  Few days later, PBY spots them, is ordered not to land.  Next day another PBY spots them, cruiser finally picks them up 1 day later.

So, 170 men went into the water, 10 come out.

When I was a kid I read a first hand account of it from one of the survivors.

Er, not to nit pick but the Juneau was an Atlanta-class light cruiser, not a destroyer.  Although, I have always considered that class of cruiser a "large destroyer".

5 of the Nelson brothers were on this ship.  4 were killed in the explosion, the other went insane after the 5th day, jumped in the water, and was attacked by 3 sharks.

There was another group of brothers on board also, the Rodgers.  Originally there were 4, but 2 transferred off the ship before it was torpedoed.
