Actually, as of a few years ago, "STD" is no longer 'correct' as the infected people dont want to be refered to as 'diseased.'  Couple that with the fact that these transmissions are 'infections' in the technical sense - viola - STI.

I guess they thought Herpes would be less dangerous if it was only an infection instead of a disease.

Diseased or infected... both get the same reaction from me. Both sound as bad. I should think it is desirable to avoid infection by the pathogens that lead to disease. STI is a logical tag.

I also suppose some people like to cry 'PC!' no matter what the issue.

Don't know about those, but STi looks a lot cooler, must be something like TDi or GDi - gasoline direct injection or turbo diesel injection. Something with lot's of torque at least.
