The F4U-1 started rolling off the assembly lines in September 1942 and didn't really see action in the area until February, 1943 when 12 planes of VMF-124 based on Guadalcanal escorted a PB2Y Dumbo to Vella Lavella to pick up downed pilots.

The TBM-3 wasn't produced until 1944 but it's predecessor, the TBF-1, played a major role during the campaign for Guadalcanal in the Solomons in 1942.
