I think you missed my point. I'll make it again. We make many compromises daily, some are less significant than others, i.e., seatbelts vs long lines at airports where everything you own including your swinging **** is subject to inspection. Without law (read restriction) there would be chaos with the strong abusing the weaker.
Here we put salt on Margaritas, not sidewalks.

we make compromises from our ability to do as we damn well please.

but we should draw the line at things that violate constitutional rights (most of the patriot act, for example), and things that are none of our damn bussiness (seatbelt and helmet laws as an example)

there is a huge difference between laws to protect others from our actions and us from theirs, and laws that violate peoples rights and freedom for the percieved feeling of security, or so some burocrat can say he did something about a problem.

If you want my feelings on the subject of freedoms capt, we've already lost far too many. However, I find it hypocritical to moan only about losing specific rights to further a political agenda. This is an old debate and I was foolish to reengage.

I hear what you're saying.  but if we only complain about a couple then say 'we've lost so many already whats the point of complaining now', then it just keeps going.

the only hope for stopping it is for those who are pissed off to stay pissed off, and as the  rights keep get taken away more are offended and add their voice to the noise.

as it is those who would sell our freedoms for proffit or percieved safety, just have to keep robbing us in small increments and just not piss off too many at once.  get mad and stay mad (btw- this is completely non-partisan, both parties screw us like this over and over).

If you're not mad, you're not paying attention.

edit for the language filter-    oops

Jonah Goldberg sums it up nicely.

DEPP ETC [Jonah Goldberg]
I don't particularly care that Johnny Depp has unkind things to say about America or the Bush Adminsitration. To date, not a single thoughtful person in Christendom has found it necessary to consult his views before making an informed decision. That said, what I do find hilarious is that all of the Europeans do care. I mean, these are the same folks who say that American culture is leading to the cretinization of the world and that Hollywood values are shallow, low-brow and materialistic. And yet, the second an American movie star opens his mouth on politics these people applaud

It is possible to like America and Americans and still disagree some of the policies of the current (or any other) Administration.
