Should I snag one of these for my new system I'm building or not? If I can't fly AH2 and my son can't play Warcraft, Starcraft and DOA it's no good to me. :D

If this has been discussed, just link the thread please, I didnt find it with a search.

I did read somewhere frame rates/overall performance would depend primarily on the vid card proc.

Athlon64 would be overkill for all of those tasks.

But who said overkill was a bad thing?

I'm waiting until next year. Funds play a significant part, but it's more to do with the availability of XP-A64, seeing the real performance benchmarks, prices - both CPU and memory - dropping, and some maturation of the platform.

Skuzzy has said that the video card will play a more important role than the processor. Fine having a leading edge processor, but it comes with a leading edge price. I shall be getting a XP2600 or XP2800 which I feel will be more than adequate.

bett1e,

Get a XP2500 with a Barton core before getting the two you listed.  It'll be both cheaper and faster due to the 333mhz bus and 512k on die cache.

The video card is the main limiting factor on framerates, but often with the extremely high end cards (the Radeon 9800 Pro is probably the fastest consumer level card available) the CPU can be a bottleneck.  Judging by the Athlon 64 benchmarks, the Radeon 9800 Pro has some extra headroom beyond what the current top of the line CPUs can offer.

I'm now waiting to see the Athlon 64 FX Model 51 (2.2 GHz clock) benchmarks that a few sites should have up within the next few days.

That is true bloom.  The 3.2Ghz P4's still cannot push the 9800Pro to its limits for very long.

I'm actually glad to see that the current top of the line CPUs are not able to push the 9800 Pro to it's limits.   My opinion is that top of the line graphics cards from about 18 months ago were not capable of offering framerates fast enough to take advantage of the then current top of the line CPUs.

It's good to see that the Model 3200+ Athlon 64 benchmarks seem to show that the 9800 Pro is capable of a lot higher framerates than when using "older" CPUs (the 3200 P4 and Athlon XP in the tests Anandtech ran).  (On a sidenote, it's also good to see that AMD's updated rating system seems to be more than fair.  I think above the 2800+ level they were pushing it a bit on the current Athlon XP processors.)

I'm curious to see whether the Athlon 64 FX (2.2 GHz with dual channel memory) can get even more gaming performance from the 9800 Pro versus the 3200+ Athlon 64 (2 GHz, single channel memory).  AMD could sure use a reason for people to move to their new Athlon 64 chips, and if this small selection of gaming benchmarks is any indication of what to expect from them, I think they have a winner on their hands.
