Is it normal/healthy to be really terrified that you wont cut it as a dad?

You'll be fine. The fact that you're even worried about it speaks much.

Unfortunately I find myself in agreement with sandy here.

Contemplation of failure does NOT lead to failure. However not contemplating it frequently does.

Think first then act and you'll likely be fine.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN

The most important advice I can give any new or expectant father is this.  BE THERE.  thats the most important thing you can do.  be there often, and as much as possable.  whenever you have a choice between spending time with your kid or doing anything else, choose the kid whenever possable and if not possable do your best to make it possable.

it's not just critical for the kid, it's for your own good too.  raising your kid is the most important thing you will do in your whole life,  keep it in perspective and keep them first.

thats damn near the whole battle right there.  if you are there to know the kid, there to see whats going on , and there to take action when it's needed, the rest is easy.

good luck.

ok I lied about the easy part :p

but it's easier then trying to go back and correct bad behavior that developed when you aren't around.
