It was far worse than the movie told you. My father was on the GE team for Apollo and was part of the engineering team rescue effort. The logistics alone of putting a rescue plan together would be a good read.

We have many jokes and all things about our own space programm, including surrealistic literature like Victor Pelevin's "Omon Ra" (a must read BTW). But our media never afforded to spread bull**** like fiction stories about Soviet cosmonauts who flew before Gagarin and "died in space", like your propaganda did.

I read Apollo missions descriptions in Soviet Encycopedia yearbooks, but this dry reports didn't give me the idea of what really happened...

IIRC Lowell's book was translated in USSR, but I didn't have a chance to read it

You know, finding some books was difficult here. If it was printed in only 100000 copies - it was almost impossible to get
