ok mr. skull, two big hitters for frame rate:

- cpu -- something above 1.5 gig is quite sufficient (well, assuming its not a celeron). I heartily recommend a p4 with 800 mhz fsb and dual ddr.

- video card - you want a decent card like at least a gforce 4; ati 9600 is a decent card, as is the newer ati9800. Avoid any card that is built into your motherboard, runs in a pci slot unless you don't have an agp port (in which case try to get one), or is an mx "cheapie" mainstream version of a decent card.

other helpers:

if frame rate is low, set your resolution in game to 16 bit, lowest res, see if that helps. Make sure antialiasing is off, texture smoothing etc. No special effects for the card as they cause more work; make sure your drivers and direct x are up to date. Make sure to turn off all non-essential programs like messenger and other memory hogs. Defrag your hard drive. If you don't have much memory add more (256 meg is ok, 512 good for winxp).

if you post your machine components you can get a better answer from the bbs guru's.

later

With this current AH, it's more beneficial to have a fast CPU because AH it's more dependent on your CPU than your video card.  AH2 is supposed to change that.

ruh row,,, I might need to upgrade

IL2,fs2004 run pretty bad on my system. Thinking my 256megs is slowing me down. Have a P42.4 256rambus mem with a GF3ti500128mb. I might be spending an extra 80 for 512 megs. Or you think a new video card would be a better investment?

I would check other things first. Certainly another 256 MB RAM.

Il2 runs fine on my machine which is XP1800+ 512MB Ram And geforce3 Ti500, just like yourself.  This is a slower machine than yours except for the RAM. Most current games run absolutely fine on my machine with AA asd anisotropic filtering OFF.

DONT use latest drivers with Ti500. 30.82's are optimised for GF3.
Avoid Direct X 9 if you can. I havn't been able to because new games insist on it. No probs mind.

Check about what is running in the background too.

Your machine is well fast enough. Get a new graphics card when AH2 and Half Life2 come out!

Good luck;)

Shouldn't be an issue. I have XP but really should have no bearing on speed .

Besides being a resource hog and crappy for gaming, ME isn't all that bad.  Well, that's not quite true...it sucks.

well, I went thru the frame rate fight, and have finally maxed out my system except I dont have the state of thart vid card.  My whole problem is that I have sdram 133, which chokes during busy scenes.
Thses are some of the things that helped my frame rates averall.

1.  Get at least 512 RAM, I noticed aprrox 10 % increas in frame rate when I upgraded from 512 to 768Meg Ram.

2.  If you are running XP, Goto blackviper.com and disable the stupid sht that gobles up your resources in the backgropund.

3.  Save your money and get a top of the line vid card, maybe not the best on the market, but a top line proven performance model.
I paid 200 bucks for my ti4200, but I really baid 600 bucks, because I cheaped my way up the ladder till i got one that could cary the bomb drops and the fleet war scenes.

4.  High speed internet connec made a huge difference.

5.  Disable antialiasing.  This made a 20 frame per second difference for me.

My system still dips below 20 in some instances, but overall it is very playable.

My system:
  p4 1.7 gHz
512 MB SDRAM 133  <--Avoid this sht, if they still make it.
\

  gf4 ti4200 vid card  <--way better than the gf4 MX 440
Winxp<--not bad os, but make sure you find out what YOU need running in the background and disable the rest.  XP assunmes you need all kinds of goofy crap at all times.
