There was an interesting article in my paper today. A couple ordered a bottle of Château Margaux at £160, but the waiter suggested a better vintage - 1966, but didn't tell them it was going to cost £800 - lol! They paid the bill, but were a bit miffed!
The article made mention of Château Petrus - the 1947 vintage in particular.
The couple paid, although Mrs Mitchell later described the experience as a "bit of a shocker".
Perhaps it should not have been such a surprise. This was the same restaurant, after all, that at its former home in St James's served one of the most expensive dinners ever.
Six City bankers ran up a staggering £44,000 bill, most of it on wine, including a bottle of 1947 Chateau Petrus at £12,300.
£12,300! That's more than $20,000 when I checked today.
