I've been thinking of getting a Frantz oil filter for my car, does anyone have any experience with them?

It's a bypass filter that keeps the oil totally clear, and the only thing you have to change is the filter element in the filter (a roll of toilet paper) and add a quart of oil, no oil change needed.

A friend of mine has over 30,000 miles on a single oil change with this filter, so I'm very interested.

The lubricicity properties of oil start to break down at around 15,000 miles depending on engine and driving conditions. 18 wheelers change their oil every 10,000 and some have a similar filter system called Luberfiner. You can skip one scheduled change, but that is all. I would not recommend driving 30,000 miles on the same oil, no matter what kind of filter you have. Remember the old FRAM commercial: You can pay me now, or you can pay a lot later.

Filter like that can clean the oil from metal chips but it won't restore the charasteristics of the oil's ingredienst.
Lubricating oils are not that expensive, I really don't know why would anyone push their luck.

You are getting new oil in because you add a quart each time you change the filter (about every 3-4k miles?), the real benefit is supposed to be in that your oil is constantly cleaned.

It's not enough new oil. There are acids that form in used oil that break it down and corrode metal.

My dad owns and runs a filter shop, and he turns purple and starts swearing and kicking things if you mention 'dunny roll' type oil filters to him....and he sells them.
Really, I know nothing about them, but he does, and doesnt like them one bit, so I just go with his advice.....steer well clear of anything regarding toilet rolls when dealing with engines.
