Need advice on a motherboard..

The p4p800 will accept the next generation of pentium's, will those other MB's????? The p4p800 has onboard sound that works very nice in AH, I just built a comp with the p4p800 deluxe, p4 2.8c with 800 fsb, 1 gig of ram, and 9800 pro. System rocks, frame rates never go under my monitor max refresh of 75 running at 1280 x 1024 res.

Whitehawk,
I've been researching new motherboards and cpu's for a new system.
So far I've decided on the P4C800-E deluxe. This board differs from the P4C800 deluxe in the LAN and RAID configuration. Don't ask me about the RAID stuff as my little brain can only handle so much technical crap. But one thing I picked up is you should get a board with the CSA GigaLAN.

This is from the Anandtech website:
"CSA GigaLAN — a technique that removes LAN from the PCI bus and gives it a dedicated “Communication Bus” away from potential PCI bottlenecks."
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1851
(Abit IC7 MAX3 is good too but a little more expensive)

Also, listen to BBGun, he lives up there with those 50lb head Microsoft buggers so he's got to know what he's talking about:) Get the good video card (Radeon9700 or 9800) and the 2.6 or 2.8Ghz 800FSB CPU.

One more thing, make sure you buy your RAM in matched pairs so you can take advantage of the dual DDR capabilities of the motherboard. My choice: Mushkin 512MB PC 3200 Level2 Dual Pack (2x256MB) CAS2-2-2, Part# 991031

I'm not a techhead but I can do some research and that is what I've come up with so far.

I'm glad to see that you went for the ATI 9800 Pro. You'll love it.

Also, good to see you not scrimping on the RAM. You won't regret the 1GB, either. :)

you need to get one of these to go with your new motherboard.

Promethiea phase change cooling system. 1.100 bucks
But it will keep you CPU even after extreme over clocking down to -25c

Ahhh, mrblack..a bachelor?
Any way, Ive put the motherboard in the case, put the cpu in the motherboard.  Some minor "it dont fit" problems but a bit of alteration on the case and It went in.  That was scary:eek:
  Tommorrow, RAM shopping.:p

Yea..I just ordered that today.  1 gig for $300 bucks, shts starting to get $$$$.  I got confused on hookingup my cd rom today.  Conflicting instructions from the mtherboard book and the cd rom book.  I have 1 hard drive and 1 cd rom.

Do I hook the hard drive to the MOBO with one cable, and the cd rom to the MOBO with 1 cable?  There are 40 pin connectors on the cd roms and a 34 pin connector on the MOBO???  My cd rom came with 1 cable and all connectors were 40 pin.  The only thing i can figure is to hook it to the secondary IDE connect on the MOBO.  OR is there a special cable??  Jeez, they sure dont waste any ink on the instructions.

Your gonna have to connect bolth the cdrom and the hd to the same cable .. if that even works with that board.. because its a Sata raid set up .... its made to use the sata hard drives .

http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/products.php?categories=1&model=130

not a very universal board thats for shure

You will wont both your cd-rom and burner if you have them on the same IDE channel, and the Hard drive on its own channel.  If you have two CD-rom or RW drives set one to master and one to slave and plug them into each other.  You really want to avoid plugging any CD drive onto the same IDE channel as your Hard Drive.

Better look at the board he has first PFunk ...
I beleive it only has 1 ide connection , the hd's are supposed to be connected by Sata cables   I posted the link for the mb above .

The motherboard manual makes no reference to any particular need for a specific type of HD.It does  give specific instructions on how to install it.  it says "connect the bleu end to to the IDE port on the mothereboard (there are 2 IDE ports) and the other 2 ends to the hard drives."  Well I only have one HD and they dont give directions for just one hard drive, so I used the HD manual to install for just one HD.  That went ok.  The manual says"
Keep away from connecting one legacy slow speed drive, like cd-rom, together with another hard drive on the same IDE channel; this will drop your system performance."
Looking closely at my MOBO, I see the 34 pin slot says FDC1, Not CD1 as I initially thought.
:(   I take it fdc1 means Floppy disk1 whcih is probably for the 3.5" drive.  So I guess I mount my CD-ROM to the IDE2 pport.
The serial ATA connectors (SATA) "are provided to attach one serial ATA device at each channel via Serial ATA cable.  SATA1 and SATA2 are controlled by south bridge"  It goes on to tell how to enable them.  This section makes no mention of CD-Rom connection, and I have no idea what SATA is or if I have the cable or if I need it.  It just says how to connect it.

Oh, It says "the serial ATA only supports Ultra DMA/ATA100 or higher HD.  Do not use HD's under this spec or it wont work."
So I guess SATA is for a vicious HD nut, which aint me.

I really appreciate the help guys, this is getting hairy.  I hope not to waste what is going to be 1500 bucks on a failed attempt.

Whitehawk,

As you know, this motherboard has 2 IDE connectors and a whole bunch of Serial ATA connectors. Since you don't have a serial ATA hard drive, you can ignore those S-ATA connectors.

Here's how you hook up your IDE devices(Hard drives, CD-ROMs):

If you have one hard drive, hook that up to the primary IDE connector with one of the IDE cables provided with the MB. If you have two hard drives, you'll need to set the jumpers on the hard drives so that one is the "master" and the other one is the "slave".  You'll notice on the IDE cables that there are three connectors, one on each end, and one in the middle. One of those ends plugs into the primary IDE connector on the MB.

If you have only one hard drive, plug the connector on the other end of the IDE cable into it, leaving the connector in the middle of the IDE cable empty.

If you have two hard drives, then after setting the jumpers (see above), plug the "master" hard drive into the connector in the middle of the IDE cable. Plug the "slave" hard drive into the connector on the end of the cable.

For your CD-ROM devices, do exactly the same procedure as above, except using the secondary IDE connector on the MB.

Remember: Hard drives go on the Primary IDE connector on the MB, and the CD-ROM devices go on the Secondary IDE connector.

I just noticed that the Abit comes with only 1 IDE (Ultra-DMA) cable, so if that's true, then you're going to have to use one of the cables that you used in your previous system. Just use the same cable that the CD-ROM devices were using from your old system.
