Call Of Duty (long post)
« on: September 29, 2003, 08:31:28 PM »
Awhile Ago I downloaded the demo...I was impressed.  Very realistic game (reminds me of a WWII version of raven shield or America's Army)

I downloaded the demo in about 7 minutes with my cable modem.  I fired up the demo level thinking, well lets see-wonder if yet another Medal Of Honor wannabe will be good this time.  Hopefully this time it will be more realistic than medal of honor-that game was kinda all "oh war is glory I just killed a entire regiment of nazis."  Being the expert FPS player I am I put the game on veteran difficulty (to maximize that realistic 1-shot and you are dead effect that I love).  Another pre-game preperation I make when playing war games is to put the speakers on full blast:cool:

Well anyway, I started up the demo to find myself stuck in a small trench with a squad of about 5 guys about to make a "stealthy" assault on the town of st. mari eglise.  Well I have a squad.  That's an improvement over Medal Of Honor. You weren't with a squad in medal of honor, only in the first level.  Unlike Medal Of Honor, lets hope they don't all get wiped out by a scripted mg42 in the first 5 seconds of the first level.

So following the squad we crept into the town as quietly as we could.  Everything was peaceful when suddenly, everything turned to hell.   Machine guns, mortars, everything erupted around me.  Right off the bat I thought "wow, they did a great job recreating the chaos of war!"  I had the difficulty on hardest, so If i stood up, I was dead.  With my speakers on full, it was awesome.  Okay I will admit it...call me a loser but I actually started shivering I was so scared, this is the first time a game has so excellently captured the chaos, hell, and scariness of war.  On my belly, I made my way past american bodies and mortar craters to a fence in front of a couple of buidings where the mg's were housed.  I looked around me, watching men get mowed down, and watching a brave 101st airbourne soldier drag a fallen comrade through the line of fire.  Well, time to fire back.  I instantly noticed another lot more realistic thing over medal of honor: Ironsights, man.  We have ironsights now!!!! well I tried to pop a few rounds at the germans in the windows, but my squad mates were making most of the kills.  I tried to aim through a tiny hole in the fence to take out an mg gunner, and very realistically, as I had him in my ironsights a string of bullet holes appeared right in the fence and dust kicked up from the ground.  I immediatly hid, got a grenade out, chucked it, and killed the gunner.  Then frantically, some men limping, we advanced to a small church through the window.  The way your AI squadmates move, use cover, and clear out buildings is very realistic.

Most of the time in medal of honor the combat was close range, but I noticed in call of duty most of the combat is everything blowing up around you, not knowing what the hell is going on, and popping aimless shots at a wall the enemy is hiding behind at very long range, hoping you make a hit.

Well I thought this game was very cool and realistic, and I am now counting down the days till it comes out.  I don't want to spoil the rest of the level for you, go download the demo, its awesome-thats just the first 5 minutes of the level.  Here are some screenshots I took of the game using printscreens:

Looks awesome.
I play MOHAA and Raven Shield from time to time, not to mention Project IGI. All have their merits with Raven shield at the top with realism. MOHAA has some cool atmosphere too, so a hybrid of those two...mmmmmmmm
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

i downloaded the demo a few weeks ago....and WOW it was awsome!

the way you explain it is true, I also was scared at some points. There was a spot by some tombstones where my squad was pined down by a MG. I didnt know what was going on or where he was. I was hidding behind a tombstone, everytime i stuck my head up a hail of bullets wissed over my head. I waited till he reloaded and shot blindly in the direction and luckly killed him.

very good demo..i hope the game is just as fun, :D

Personal animosity stemming from the way they handled the AirWarrior community. I know it was an old and outdated game, but the people who played it deserved better.

the FG-42 you pick up off the dead kraut paratroopers is awesome.

That demo level kept me entertained for many hours trying all the different weapons.

I love running up to people and pistol whipping/beating them with rifle butt.
I am not ashamed to confess that I am ignorant of what I do not know.
