While I have no Idea what type of tanks this tactic was used against, I do know of two P47 pilots and 1 P51 pilot who spoke of using the skip method against ground vehicles routinely.

That's right, he did! As for the nay sayer's about this tactic, it wasn't Hollyweird that said it, it was the guys behind that big fan that actually did it and are telling about it...the effectiveness of such a tactic is altogether another story.

While I'm not going to comment on the recolections of men who fought a war 50+ years ago I have seen some references to how useless it is to attack a tank with machine guns.  
   Not so!  It's not the dammage that matters. For the price of a few rounds it tells those in the tanks that "Your Air Force is powerless to stop us.  We own the Sky. You are alive right now because we don't have any bombs.  We will be back tomorrow, and then your war will end"
    Those men in the Panzer's new this all too well.
