You see Chairboy, there's a reason that a pilot that flies as much as Yeager does gets to celebrate 80 birthday parties.

A pilot that has flown all life regularly knows when he's apt to fly. He's not flying for a living anymore, just to have fun, and if he loses confidence in his own aptitudes, the fun is gone.

**** happens...he'll do what he thinks is best...

he'd probably prefer to die in the cockpit than sitting at home telling people stories about his younger days...though at least HIS will be true

Chairboy I know that the question has already been asked but I would like it repeated:

How long have you been rated as a pilot ?
How many hours do you have in the type of the aircraft that Mr. Yeager was piloting at the time of incident ?

If you don't have any such experience, which I'm pretty sure the case is, how can you make any type of intelligent conclusion as to why the incident happened without any type of factual investigation of the afore mentioned ?  From that snippet posted any number of factors may or may not have happened leading to the end result of the aircraft leaving the tarmac.  These could be anything from a mechanical failure to a pilot failure, but then again nothing in that post alludes to anything other than the fact that Mr Yeager was the Pilot in Command.  Once again we the public are left to assume that the 5th Estate has correctly protrayed events in the most accurate manner possible, unless gifted by such clairvoyant talents many apparently, such as yourself, posses and are able to discern facts that are not included in the original article.  Might I suggest as to ask how and why you have come to the conclusion that age is the only factor, if it is in fact a factor, resulting in the aforementioned article ?

Why pick on Yeager?  Pick on those old geezers whose reflexes are so shot they drive their §$"$§! golfcarts through Sun Citys main streets at 10mph.

Met yeager once.  His jet landed at Reno, FBO when we landed our rotor to get fuel after a call.  Got an autographed rental car pamphlet (only thing handy at the time...)  He wasn't flying though, he had 2 pilots flying the jet, he and some friends were along for the ride...

Hmm, lets see...he's 80 years old, and has made more freaking landings than most of us have had sex.  Now the odds of one of you making your partner(hope it's female & human) pregnant because of a dumb move is a lot higher percentage than Gen. Yeager running off "another" runway again in the next 80 years.  My money's on Chuck. :p

I second what the seasoned pilots above have said. Until you have a sizeable amount of hours (i cant even begin to imagine how much yeager has at this point) there's no way you can accurately gauge his flying ability based solely on the fact he went off in a high crosswind.

thats like a 16 year old fresh outta driving school making a statement that any senior citizen who's run his car off the road in snow should have their license pulled.

i have a grandmother who at 95 is still a better driver then half the people i see on the road. she's fiercely independant, and if at that age she can be that good with a car i have no doubt in my mind yeager is ok with a plane, and he has 15 years on her.
