Frame rate is horrible
« on: October 06, 2003, 06:30:34 PM »
I got a computer about 3 years old, works fine for what i use it for.  I have all my AH settings as low as they can go, ive done just about everything i can to increase my framerate a little bit.  Im still only getting a constant 15-20 FPS.  I need help please!  Any suggestions?  I have Windows 98, 127MB of ram, and a 64MB Video card (but im not sure).

P.S. I really dont want to buy a new Video Card or anything of that sort...

DF United if you could fill in the following gaps, I'm sure we could be more help.

CPU Type/Speed (e.g PIII 600MHz)
Exact type of graphics card:
Operating System:

ALl that aside a three year old computer is still just that, a three year old computer.  The first thing you should do is ensure that absolutely nothing which is not absolutely essential is using your PCs resources.  Quite often you will have lots of stuff running in the background, these pretty much all have to go.

If you have a cd for your OS then I suggest doing a fresh install unless you have done this already in the last couple of months.  Finally it might be worth considering a bit more system RAM,  I know you said you really didnt want to buy new gear, but I think a bit more RAM will make for much better performance.
Good Luck:)

Start/run type in msconfig  hit ok

Under the startup tab

What you need to leave checked is

System tray
Mouse drivers

Perhaps power profile
Any other software that your system NEEDS to run.
Such as CD drivers etc.

Go carefully, figure out what each entry is.
Decide if you need to have it running all the time.

If yes, leave it checked. If no, uncheck.

You can make your system unbootable so be carefull.

Each time you exit you'll have to restart.

Lots of programs set themselves up to run on startup. Most you do NOT need.
ie you can start them manually when needed.

Also make sure you have no spyware installed that can really bog your system down.

I like spybot Search & destroy.
Free download & a google search will find it easily

Good luck

p3 700mhz is going to be on the low end no matter what you do with it.

When AH 2 comes out I suspect it will be unplayable for you as the sys specs are going up.

Save your money, there are some very reasonable bundles out there, Mboard, CPU & Memory. Hook one of them up in your old case with perhaps one of the cheaper ATI cards and you'll be flying in style for a while.
