some guys are better at pop-up management than I, but here is what works for me; 1st thing you do need to get a fire wall (and make sure you have a current antivirus program going) - zone alarm is free, works great. Make sure you have any messaging software turned off, stuff like microsoft messenger, aol messenger etc. You can also sniff out programs that may be attracting pop ups with a program like spybot, it will search your system for spyware/trojan apps and then you can delete them. Try pop up stopper to help keep them from appearing period. Lastly, avoid sites that love pop ups - free chat rooms, porn sites, etc. However, none of this helps if you don't run an antivirus program that is up do date or if you skip on a fire wall -- you must be protected or you will get infected.

A lot of the popup/spam in the winXP series is caused by the integration of windows messenger.  The best thing to do is remove that obtrusive POS program.  The catch is that you can't do it from the control panel under normal circumstances.

In order to remove said program, click start->run and in the box type the following command:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

After you've done this, reboot your machine.  Voila, no more Windows messenger.

MSN Messenger 6 can plague you with spam/popups, too.  This one, thankfully, can be removed in the usual fashion: start->control panel->add/remove programs.

Hope this helps.
