HELP-AH wont run
« on: October 09, 2003, 05:15:02 PM »
When I start the program the clipboard comes up slow and jerky and the control buttons are not there. Also the colors are smeared horizontally. I set the screen size before the first start-up the same as my desktop, but I dont get the option to change any more. Please help.

First make sure you are running DirectX8.1 or better.
Then:
Go into your Aces High settings folder and delete the Video7cfg file there. This will make the video settings window appear when you first launch AH.
Launch AH and check your video settings.
Knowing your system specs would help here, but try running your resolution at 800 x 600 and boost up to 1024 X 768 if that works.

Sounds to me that you have a direct X problem or you have a low end system and are trying to run at too high of a resolution. (IE a resolution higher than your vid card can support).

Also, you should set your resolution the same on your desktop as you set in AH.

I'm not a techie or any form of computer guru, but these are "safe things" that I know you can muck with.

Cheers, and hope this helps

You can get to the video settings screen, at the beginning of the game, by pressing the key 4 times, followed by pressing the once.

Sounds like you set the game resolution too high for the video card.  It takes a lot less effort for the video card to work in 2D mode (the Windows desktop) than in real-time 3D mode.

What make and model of video card do you have?
What speed is the CPU?
How much ram/memory does the system and the video card have?
What Operating System are you running?

Thanks for replying RTR, Skuzzy ,

I'm not sure if directx was loaded right last night. I downloaded 9.0b at work today and will try that tonight.

My video card is a Voodoo III 16MB PCI, I'm running a AMD 850 with 132 MB ram in Win 98. I'm pretty sure I set the resolution to 1024x768(same as desktop), that's where I was running it before with no problems. Only thing different now is a new hard drive.

Thanks again. Dadman III JB

16mb video card?  *ouch*
new HD....did you update the drivers for the vid card when you installed the new HD?
I am not familiar with voodoo so can't advise you on which drivers  you need.
I am absolutley positive that Skuzzy would know though.

Also, am pretty sure that with such a small vid card 1024x768 is too much.
Try 600x800 there.
BUt like I said, 16mb ....*ouch*, if AH runs, I dont think you are gonna see frame rates anywhere near decent.
(srry for the bad news).
Anyway, this just got out of the realm of my limited "expertise".

Skuzzy??

cheers,

That card is at the end of its life.  It probably will not even work at all for AH2.  Just a heads up.

Your need to set the color depth to 16 bit and check the "Disable Palletized Texture" options.  Probably should run it at 800x600.

You should not have installed DX9.  I am afraid the drivers for that card may have some problems with DX9.

OH no, guess it'll be a while before I'm flyin agian.

I've been shopping for a new AGP vid card, that will happen soon. I did'nt update the drivers though, maybe that will fix it for now. I never had problems running AH at 1024 x 768 before, but I'll try at the lower setting till I get the new card.

If I can't get it to work with DX9 I'll remove it and get 8.1.

BTW, last try I changed the screen size to different settings and each time I got this message. ERROR  Initialization Failed With 0, Unknown-1.

Thanks again

That error indicates the video card could not be initialized, for whatever reason.

Probably due to DX9, but that is a bit of a guess.

On the resolution, you might be able to get away with 1024x768, but you MUST set the color depth to 16 bit.
