setting up zone alarm pro
« on: October 14, 2003, 07:56:33 AM »
Hey  all -

I've finally gotten around to putting a firewall on my computer last night.  I've got dial up so I've never had one before.  I figgered I was pretty safe with dial up, but my computer does acutally get hit even with my slow connection.

So, I did a search in here on zone alarm and didn't find any specific posts on how to configure ZA to run properly.

I know AH needs specific ports to run.  How do I open up specific port for AH, while leaving others closed?  Right now I have it set up so all ports are open, which I THINK is not very secure (feel free to correct me here.)

Also, when I try to access the BBS with ZA running, I just get a blank page like ZA is preventing something from loading.  What do I need to change to correct this.  If I turn off ZA, the page loads correctly, so I'm pretty sure that ZA is the problem there.

Is there anything else I need to know that I may be missing here?

Much Thanks!!

Modas, those are two seperate issues that can be solved in the same place.

Since I don't know how familiar you are with computers or zone alarm, I'm going to explain this as though you were a complete moron.  Apologies in advance.

Right click on the ZA icon near the time in the task bar.  click "restore"

On the left side of the panel that pops up, click "Program Control"  Then click the "programs" tab.

If you've already tried to connect with Aces High, it should show in the list that is in that tab.  If it's there,  cleft click on all the marks next to it, and change them to "allow".

AH should now run.

If it isn't there, then go to the bottom of the tab and click "add"

Go to c:/Program Files/HTC/Aces High and highlight aceshigh.exe.   Then click add and check the boxes next to aceshigh.exe so they say "allow"

It should now run.

As for the blank pages, click the "privacy" button to the left, then click main.

Check your settings.  You probably have animation blocked.

A complete moron??? :D

Why you arrogant... ah, never mind...  :rofl

Anyways, I was able to get AH to connect.  What I was confused on were posts that mentioned specific ports that AH needs open to run.  I have AH enable in ZA and have been able to connect.  I just want to make sure I don't have any unnecessary ports open.  I'm assuming when AH connects, the correct ports are up and running and all is right with the world.  I didn't know if there was something I need to configure manually.

AND...  when it comes to ports, protocols, etc, I AM a complete moron. ;)

thanks for the help!

If you have ZA Pro set to allow AH all ports and protocols then your done.

It will allow AH access to connect and play but all other programs will still be blocked.

And unless your going to be hosting i know you do not need to tick the boxes to allow AH to act as a server.

No problem.  That's the beauty of Zone Alarm.  If you enable it in the program list, as I explained, it will allow the program to use the ports it needs.  You don't need to mess with anything else.

Also, if you have the pro version, right click AH under the program tab and click "Changes Frequently".  This will be especially useful when patches and such start coming.

Hey Gents -

Thanks for the help.  One last questions, (I think) :)

I am finally able to get the BBS to show up.  However, in order to do this, I have to de-select "BLOCK SCRIPTS" under mobile control.  The other two boxes I have checked.

Does anyone else have this setting unchecked to get the BBS to work?

thanks again!!

I use zone alarm pro, so I'm unsure.

I have mobil control set to "off".
