I've built up more systems than your average techno-dweeb.
I currently have 4 sitting here on my local network...the one

I'm not "cheap"...I spend more on symphony and opera
subscriptions every year than a new "super gamer system"
 would cost.
However, I played this "upgrade your system for the next

don't care to keep chasing the "eye-candy" hoop, which is what
appears to be the bait here. Your reply here was neither helpful
or informed. Such is the gene pool these days...

Funny with all those systems sitting around you would think you would have one that would work :rofl

maybe you should let me build you  one like mine:D

Gypsy Baron I hate to break it to you but if you'd be even marginally experienced in hardware you'd realise that oil lanterns can't be switched on from a wall switch. You need Edison's fancy new electric lighting for that. If you want to go over the top you can even get fluorescence these days.

I guess oil lanterns were perfectly good hardware 100 or so years ago. So were your computers a couple years back.

Updated to Dx8.1 and I no longer get GPFs.

I can't believe how this thread deteriotated... one moment people are reporting GPF's, the next it's threats and name-calling.

Upgraded my DirectX to 9.0b and put on the latest ATI Catalyst drivers (I have a Radeon 7200 64MB DDR) and it runs fine now.  Frame rates are pretty low, in the 20's, but that's with the detail set high.  Unforuntately it is only running at 800x600 in 16bit.  If I crank it up higher than that it sometimes locks up in the tower.

Gypsy I had the same problem with another ATI TV tuner (All in Wonder VE), but they have new drivers out that fix the problem and they've been out for months.

I haven't stopped upgrading but I have implemented a "no more than $100/component" rule (one exception being monitors). Sometimes I fudge it a little anyway.

I've had the problem mentioned at the top of this thread.

Downloaded the M$oft DirectX 8.1 driver and that let me start the game.

Thanks for the input, MetaTron. I'll keep this in mind when
I decide what I'm going to do vis-a-vis AH II and new
 video card and/or system.

I basically subscribe to the "if it ain't broke, don't screw with it"
school. Once I get a system stable and that meets my current
requirements, I stop chasing the "upgrade hoop".

I reached that point with AH and this current system a year
and a half or so ago. I think that's when I went through the
 DX8.1b install/remove/continue to remove/purge registry
cycle to get back to 8.0 and a working TV tuner. Stopped
reading the ATI related newsgroups then as well :)

Lately I've been meandering the newsgroups and vendor
sites looking at ATI AIW Radeon boards. IF I decide to
upgrade I MAY go to a 9800 AIW Pro or possibly scale back
to a 9600 AIW Pro.  I just shudder at the thought of going
 through the uninstall/install/get BSOD/try it all again...and
again...and again cycle that seems to be the norm with
 MS OS and ATI products...

 Again, thanks for your input.

The 9600xt doesn't have a TV Tuner, which is essential
for my purposes. I need an AIW Pro of one variety or
another. I'm gonna wait a month or two before I do
 anything.

Man Gypsy I am the same as you, ya hit the nail on the head there. I have 7 up at the moment on my LAN, and really don't need to here that crap from a person who just bought the latest thing from best buy or some place.. lol
I don't mind helping folks beta test software, doing something constructive, and I hope my first post here helps them.
