Let me start this by saying we all have our axes to grind. Mine is the cowardly back stabbing arrogant ways of a certain European government that seems to derive a national pride in spitting in its allies eyes while bending over backwards to help third world despotic regimes. But that is not the topic of this thread.  ;)

Therefore I certainly can understand the passion that some of us feel for different topics. However some topics are interesting and should be discussed before certain hotheads jump in and get the threads locked. Discussion opens our eyes to what is happening over in different communities and lets us be aware of how the world is evolving.

I am talking of course about other flight sims. Every time I see a thread about a certain flight sim in here some of us really seem to make it a point to get the thread locked. I personally love to see sims discussed by people who are masters of a different sim. If for no other reason it lets me see the strengths and weaknesses of them from a different perspective.

I think each excells in at least one area and if you were to combine the best of each you would certainly have an interesting game. Or not. Some times like cooking having the best ingredients is not enough, it is what you do with them.

Ok rant over.

Translation for those that did not get my point. Try not to blow a gasket each time a different flight sim is mentioned in a thread over here.

Again? Nobody blows a gasket when other sims are discussed by people who are part of this community. I think the problem with the "other sim" is similar to most of our reactions to telemarketing at dinner time, with no means to return the favor. Make that telemarketing by a religious organization that doesn't understand the concept of "not interested today" and calls back as soon as you hang up the phone.

Point taken. If someone creates an account just to plug another product then that is not cool.

Other sims are evolving all the time (as is AH) so it is interesting to revisit them once in a while and see what has changed, and when you know the person who is discussing them then that makes their opinions of more interest.

I like the fact that HiTech has kept these forums more or less open. I think they can do that because their product is a good one. Fighter Ace took a different route in regards to criticizism of their game. They closed the forums to all non account holders (ie if you had a subscription for 3 years and then let is lapse you instantly lost the right to read and post to the forums). That was totally stupid and prevented new customers from learning about the game. Then they allowed guest to read but not post which again is stupid as it prevented people from asking questions. Such a draconium approach has obviously limited discussion and I think in the long run will insulate the game developers from a broad range of opinions. Not a good thing.

These "other flight sims" have their own forums. I would think that that would be the best source to "see the strengths and weaknesses of them from a different perspective."

Go to one of the other sim boards and try to start a discussion the same as they start here. Don't be surprised at their reaction.

I NEVER have problems with people talking about other games.

I love finding new games and hearing honest opinions about them.

My only problem is with the fanboys who come in here bashing anyone who doesn't like their game.

Last week I d/led a mod for EA Sports' "F1 2002".  The mod is called "Sports Car Racing" by a group called RacingSimDesignGroup at http://www.rsdg.net.  The mod is free and easy to install and is a sim of the ALMS LM900 and LM675 cars, with the ALMS road courses such as Sebring and Sears Point.

You should be able to find F1 2002 pretty cheap now, since EA came out with its "F1 99-02 Season" game.  F1 2002 supports USB controllers, no problems.

Its a good way to get into the action quick!

I don't go there anymore but I remember Aces High (the first beta) and WW2OL (the first Beta) being discussed on the old Fighter Ace board all the time. No one objected to those discussions. In fact many of the early customers came from that game to those two games. (Myself included).

Arlo and Brat came over to Fighter Ace and tried to start a flame war after Avenger and Getsumj went over to the Big Week board and started causing trouble. That was really the first time I remember any of this game bashing happening.

AHA! So they finally focused on a genre where blackouts, redouts and other gravitational/power effects don't need to be modelled!  ;)

:rofl  A Balloon sim.

I enjoy seeing other flight sims being discussed because like most of you I spend a disproportionate about of time playing them. It is what I like to do with my free time. Discussions about IL2 or WW2OL or whatever are never boring to me.

That being said what is Air Warrior 4? I thought AW bit the dust a while ago.
