Omega Drivers - Skuzzy and other techies
« on: October 21, 2003, 10:42:11 AM »
I've seen reference to these drivers a couple times so I decided to check them out.  I did some research on the site and found that, among other things, the developers took standard reference drivers and added their own tweaks to bolster performance.  The readme file tells the end user not to make any further adjustments or tweaks to these drivers as doing so will have ill effect.

I've always used the reference drivers on my cards and adjusted things manually.  What, if any, benefit would I see from these drivers?  What are the cons?

Skuzzy...anyone?

Omega's drivers amount to a set of registry changes.  The actual code is the same driver as the reference driver.

Some people like the changes, others do not.  The only potential problem could occur during a driver upgrade.  If you are not careful to remove the Omega drivers, before installing updates, you could end up with a mess on your hands as the registry changes may break something in the next reference driver upgrade.

Do you have any insight as to image quality changes, rendering issues, etc?  For example, I know the 45.23 drivers from nVidia have some issues with proper shadowing that wasn't present in the 44.03 set, and has been removed in 52.14.

I'll have to install them and perform some tests I suppose.  From what I've heard the framerate jump is quite measurable (aka guys pushing 250 fps on a gf2 in AH).  I'll give them a whirl and report my findings.

Thanks for the reply Skuzzy.
