Which sound card you running?
Have you looked for updated drivers for it?

You say "freeze", is it temporary, or it stay locked up?

Either way the problem is most likely to be with your sound card or drivers like roscoroo said.

Type "dxdiag" in the RUN box on your startup menu (without the quotes), hit enter and run the DirectX diagnostics.  Go to the sound section and test your sound for errors. Update sound drivers if any errors are present, then re-install DirectX8.1 or 9 afterwards.  After re-installing DirectX run diagnostics again and in the sound section reduce sound hardware acceleration at least one notch left on the acceleration scale.
