Depends on many factors. In spit I fought it this way: "check for place to run and hide, challange many, make them believe that they can get you, drag high, rope, if lost advantage -- run". In yak I fight it "engage, avoid, vertical, check for chance to shoot, get speed/distance, turn... see step 1."
Also, the easier one shall be shot down first, preferably with the first attack. Who is easier you can judge on their first moves. Obviously your main task is to set it to the easier 1vs1 mode ASAP, or unless there are a clear pilot skill advantage you are eventually dead.
