I'll let someone else do that Eskimo. But the most important picture (IMO) on that page is the 2nd one in, fifth row down above the name of "Earl." Next would be the guy to his right named "Jack" who was his real life wingman.
Earl "Dutch" Miller (and Jack Ogilvie) both flew P-39/P-400's and P-47's (as well as many other aircraft like a P-38G they had to chase down JU-88 recce flights and an old wheazy Hurricane for unit admin duty) all the way from Afrika in 1942 and into Europe in 45 with the 345thsquadron, 350th FG. Great guys.
Westy
p.s. I heard Earl flew AH but I've not been online much lately to "see" him nor do I know what his handle is.
p.s.s. A few years ago in AW I was 'Westy' but in AH I'm 'Westy' ;) This is me:

Eighteen years ago after a long and non-illustrious career as a flight instructor, I gave up flying and developed a phobia which kept me away from airplanes of any kind. I suspect it had something to do with the many students who were evidently paid to try to kill me. In any case, there were benefits, I took various train trips east and west which put me in touch with the beauty of this country at ground level and I also brought a motor home for the same purpose and enjoyed it until I sold it a month or so ago. While on vacation at Disney World to which I went via AutoTrain, out of a clear blue sky I was struck like Saul with the thought that something that I loved so much couldn't possibly kill me. This was the result;

Cattle Dogs are awesome....mine keeps wanting to go to the store down the road, since the cute girl who works the counter is always stuffing her full of free hot dogs hehe...
Krusher....she's not camera shy....that's, ummm....a really known and seldom photographed dog-gang gesture :p
One last one... (We got that "Forest Gump lean in unison" thing down pact, eh?)

1990-91 model?
I had a Red/White/Blue FZR 600 (1989) with a Muzzy pipe. Loved it, loud, fast, great wheelie bike...kinda had to calm down tho, leaned over so far I scuffed the pipe :)
-
1990-91 model?
93.
The V&H pipe thats on now is seriously loud, your right about wheelies, the bike is so light. Great for corners, I haven't scuffed the pipe yet but I'm on my 3rd set of knee pucks :)

Its a black Logitech wireless keyboard, coupled with a black wireless, optical Logitech mouse. l33ter you wont find anywhere, its the only wireless black keyboard & mouse that will work on my FreeBSD and Mandrake OS's, unless you own an IBM clickykeyboard there is no way in hell you can be more 3133t, and with those you still have to get tangled in stupid wires that are so 1990's.
As for no elbow support, the left armrest was removed to make space for the throttle in my superl33t HOTAS system. An example below:

The sample rate on the mouse is slower than most wired mouses, but not too bad. It only affects if you are sniping.
As for the armrest thing; I only remove it when I'm gonna use the joystick, its easy to attach back.

My position has the unusual side benefit of getting to test virtually every military small arm currently in service worldwide. This includes assault rifles (M4, AKM, AK-74,Sig 550, H&K, etc), sub machine guns, light machine guns (M249, M60), heavy machine guns (M2HB, Mk.38) and a great many handguns (Beretta M9, 92, 96D, Sig, Colt, Glock, S&W, etc). I've tested at Ft. Benning, NSWC Crane, Little Creek and a dozen other locations.
This testing revolves around a device that is mounted in the pistol grip of most weapons. It monitors the number of rounds fired. It records angle and azimuth of each shot. Each shot is dated and time stamped to within one millisecond. Data is stored on a chip and can be downloaded to a Palm Pilot via cable, or and infrared reader, then transferred to a PC later.
Currently, Accu-Counter systems are available for about a dozen different weapons, with many more under development.
I design the sensors that detect the weapon being fired. This is why I must do a great deal of live-fire testing. My company also markets the system to the Military and Federal agencies. Accu-Counter is our client.
You can check out their website here:
Accu-Counter (http://www.accu-counter.com)
Or, the company I work for at:
Aerodyne Controls (http://www.aerodyne-controls.com)

I presume you mean the QuickShot MasterPilot? It is programmable, so that various keystrokes can be sent at the press of a button - eg, to set bomb salvo, instead of typing ".salvo 3", I press a button on the MasterPilot and it types it for me. Used in conjunction with my HOTAS, it means I only ever touch the keyboard to type on the radio channels. Unfortunately, I think they are discontinued now... My main problem now is finding a system slow enough to program the cartridges! :D

Thanks Flossy... I think I read about something like those a couple of years ago. I'm surprised they never caught on. Maybe they'll reissue something similar with USB support... it seems like it would be tremendously useful.

Yeah they are very useful, and we have a few here - I think Zeb has two, and I do know of others who have at least one, or in some cases two or three, but I find one is more than enough for my needs, used in conjunction with the Cougar HOTAS. I used to use it even more in AW, having 4 separate layouts for fighters (not used much! :D), flying bombers, gunning and vehicles, as each had their own useful buttons. I think if a newer USB version was brought out, they would sell like hot cakes! :)

Hiya Soulyss. Yes, that's one of four plates used to print a four-color etching. Have only done one like that one...took me 18 months of steady work to complete it. Here's my web site. All the etchings on the site are hand colored monotypes...the easy way to add color.:)
Thanks for your post Soulyss. It's nice to meet a fellow printmaker. Soulyss

Just had a look Leslie, great work. I only got to try 1 etching and though I thought it was decent for a first effort I wasn't satisfied with it (the bane of artists around the world I know). I had time contraints and we were stuck using aerosol spray paint instead of rosin as aquatint so the greys aren't as fine and solid as I hoped they be. I still got the plate, just no way to keep working on it. ;) Hope you like it.

It's not an attachment. He has done it using the IMG/URL method - posted the picture on a website, then used the image code with the URL for it to show here. :) (If it was an attachment, "Durr has attached this image:" would be shown at the top....)

This response (#309#) makes this thread the most responded to thread in the history of the AH BB! I think that it's great that this thread is positive in nature, as it seems that negative threads get the majority of the attention.

I work at RAF Cottesmore and was very sad to see the Tornado's leave after they were there from 1981-1999. They make so much noise and the Italian's were always very polite! ;)

Only had mine a few days, as a local mobile phone shop had a special offer on through Vodafone where any handset was free with a Vodafone contract, for 2 days only. Sane? Your the one that looks like a wannabe vampire/goth dweeb. I bet you listen to sousie and the banshees and think that anne rice is god:D
-
Actually, he hates Anne Rice and American Goths who think they're vampires - don't get him started on that one. I just think he looks better with a nose :)
-
I heard a story at the Con that cracked me up regarding Goth/Vampire types.
Apparently there was an online sim out which focused on vampires and they were holding a convention in the same venue as, I think Warbirds were...or it may have been AH.
Anyway..these guys/girls were walking around in their "costumes" and some would have their arms crossed in front of them...some showing one finger..some showing up to 4.
The deal was that the arm crossing thing meant that they were "invisible" and the number of fingers showing represented the level of invisibilty attained by the person's on-line character.
Two WB or AH Con goers came across one of these bozos with his arms crossed in front of him and just as they came level with the goth one of them dropped his shoulder and ploughed into the guy sending him into the corridor wall and onto the floor.
The guy who did it apparently leaned over the vampire wanna-be and said "Sorry....didn't see you".
:D
-
Arggh. Kill them all. Those goons give Goth such a bad name. (as if it didn't have one anyway)
My favourite trick with the 'vampire'types is just to punch them really hard in the face. They get upset when they bleed just like evryone else....
by the way, is that a Whitby photo 'Agirl'?

Use to ride the double decker bus from Tynemouth j bout every weekend back in the summer of 70 to that store..

Wow, i'd forgotten Whitley Bay even existed, went there a couple of times when i was in Newcastle.
No, I was talking about Whitby, there's a Goth festival there twice a year, gets over a thousand people each time, which i'm pleased to note is about three times the number that turn up for the BNP's annual gathering.
-
Heck of a difference between Whitby and Whitley Bay! :D For one thing, they talk funny in Whitley Bay..... :p

That's very disturbing.
I'm not a Goth apologist, but what the hell is so different about a group of online players getting together in costume and playing out their personas than there is a bunch of drunken middle-aged farts waving their hands around and making airplane noises talking about their latest "sorties?" One is just as make-believe as the other.
I've been to cons, us flight simmers are easily as subject to ridicule as anyone else, trust me! Look at the photo above, that's proof positive!
That some of them would restort to violence against another online player of a different ilk is just sad....
-
For the record, that was NOT an AH con. We're too busy blowing sheep up and getting drunk to bother with such Goth mortals.
-
besides, I get enough makeup on me already from my GF, without the need to transfer some from someone in Goth garb

You know man...you are the only one who has thought that this was "disturbing"...and I've told that story to alot of people. Most of them cringe at the thought of someone actually dressing themselves up and going out in public "pretending" to be invisible and ALL of them howled with laughter when it came to the "Oh, sorry..didn't see ya" part.
I still do whenever I think about it.
If the poor vapmire had been hurt then maybe the story wouldn't be so funny....but there was no indication that was the case when it was told to me.
People did think we (AH Con goers) were geeks for the most part. One group, chatting in the elevator amongst themselves said "Did you see those nerds in that room with all the computers?" Mox, one of my squaddies turned to them and with a straight face said "We're not nerds...we're pilots!"They apologised to him in an awed tone.
:D
-
I won't say I didn't find it amusing at first. The whole thought of being "invisible" made me smirk, and there was a bit of a punchline, but then I thought about the situation from the other person's point of view.
In his shoes (I'm assuming he's male) the incident might well be the low point of his own con. Here he is amongst a group of his virtual "friends" doing his "thing" and then two guys come down the hall and drop him for no good reason. You're right, it's hilarious. And then one of the AHers (not sure to whom you're referring, but I'll take it on your authority he's from AH) has the temerity to explain to the victim why he was assaulted.
How about if the situation were reversed and one of our fellow flight simmers was wearing a beanie hat with a propeller and a T-shirt saying "I've got your joystick right here!", thinking it was all good for a laugh, and then two guys dressed up in chain mail or whatever slam him into the wall for looking like such a dweeb? Not so funny when it's one of our own kind, eh?
Violence is violence, no matter how you dress it up. Stop objectifying the guy because he's Goth, or a vampire, or whatever, and therefore "different." Actually, you two are probably much more alike than you'd care to admit: he was an online gamer, just like you, caught up in his fantasty just as much as we are in ours. And he was even one of the rare ones that actually shelled out his own cash to attend a convention. Too bad it had to be soured by a couple of idiots.
Now what would have been funny (in a somewhat detached way), is if there had been an all-out brawl between a legion of dorky flight-simmers and a horde of dweeby Goth RPGers. Not so funny if you're involved, but very amusing to the average viewer of the 6 o'clock news who doesn't know what the hell an online game is in the first place. ;)
I'm sorry I'm the only one that found your little tale disturbing. I don't have some sort of agenda and normally don't tilt at windmills thinking everything is an "issue" or that everyone's oppressed and somehow victimized, but this one just didn't seem so amusing. It's not three guys who have a friendship sharing an inside joke or having a romp with everyone around knowing its harmless as one gets picked on; instead it's two people attacking a total stranger for no reason other than he's different than they are. And the reality is, they're damned similar. Maybe no one else gave it any thought above the superficial; I'll admit I found it funny on that level, too, for a moment. And then I realized what actually happened, and it just plain sucks.
Cheers,
phaetn
-
Okay, fine...I'll consider myself "virtually" bottom-spanked by you.
Can I get a hug now?

Sorry for hijacking the thread. Impersonal violence always bothers me, for some reason. Now let's go and shoot some stuff up online! (yeah, I recognize the irony)
I don't want to spank your bottom, in actuality or virtually. But do me a favour and pass me a sheep, will ya? That one over there looks shaved in just the way I like 'em! :D

hmm.. I guess I wouldn't call being bumped into violence.
but then again I might start violence if it were other than accidental.
-
Oh Puuhhhleease....
Get a grip.
Its funny as hell.
You've never seen assault or violence, if you think a bump in a hallway equates to assault.
The tagline makes it.
If a nerd in goth drops a nerd in a propeller beanie, is there any testosteron there to make a sound?
Actually, if it was a friend of mine getting dropped, I'd possibly throw down.....so what? (Unless it was Rip who would just Kung-Fu grip-em' into submission)

First of all your "if a tree falls in the forest" anaolgy is probably the funnisest thing I have read on the boards.:D
Second of all, I have to admit that if someone did it to me or a friend, I would have react as well.
Third, let's take this to the O'Club...I already started a thread over there.
-
...but then again I might start violence if it were other than accidental.
and
Actually, if it was a friend of mine getting dropped, I'd possibly throw down.....
Right. And I know I would, too. I don't like to admit it, but there it is. If some stranger dropped me, and then suggested it was because of the way I looked, I'd probably make some quip back about the way he looked, and then there'd be a stupid brew up, and hopefully I'd have friends to back me. Senseless, really.
I have a very secure grip (too tight, maybe?). ;) I have seen violence, and more than I'd care to have done. I've been and sent people to the hospital as a result of stupid fights. It's not a boast, merely a statement of fact. I wish it had been different. I'm generally quite non-violent myself (sheesh, didn't you see how skinny I am?!?), but when you're young, and tempers flare, stupid things happen. I'm glad those days are well behind me.
My point is that it wasn't an accidental bump in the hallway. It was a deliberate action, and of enough force that it knocked the guy down: "[...he put his shoulder down and] ploughed into the guy sending him into the corridor wall and onto the floor." Then he leaned over and added an insult "justifying" his cause.
If that's not an assault, I don't know what is. It was clearly done with malice -- there doesn't have to be injury or bodily harm for it to be an assault (or a person, even -- property can be assaulted) -- and it was clear that he had intent. It was an unlawful attack, period. Not the sort of thing worth going to the authorities over, but that doesn't make it any less wrong.
If it was all in innocence it would be funny. At one level I still find it so. But the real hang up for me is that this wasn't something done in the spirit of fun, but a totally unprovoked attack, so I just don't find it funny... call me a pacificst or a wimp or whatever. Forgive me for blowing it out of proportion, but I won't just shrug it off and say "ha ha, the loser deserved it." He didn't. In fact, it just plain stinks that that had to happen to him when he was there doing exactly what the AH guys were doing: enjoying the community of his peers from an online game.
Look, I'm just trying to keep busy with this sheep without anyone noticing. But it turns out that I'm beginning to like this Goth guy I never met more and more while all the while deploring ever more strongly the actions of the dolt that dropped him. It gives con goers a bad rep...
Cheers,
phaetn
[Edit]
Whoopsie, I was composing this as you posted, Curval. You're quite right, it should be in the O'Club.
-
you have valid points but this
an unlawful attack,
is taking it too far IMO.
yeah yeah, I know that by strict definition it is 'assault' but please...
punch is an assault but to knock someone down and (supposedly) he wasn't hurt..
Obviously it wasn't 'right' for the guy to knock him down but let's not blow it out of proportion.
People get offended too easily these days...
then pull guns, etc.
IMO get the hell out of the way if you don't wanna' be knocked down.
(I'd get out of the way of a big guy)
and
Play your games (AH, WB, vampire inviso) whatever..
but stay IN YOUR ROOM while you play.
oops me too.. o'club
I just keep thinking there are more AH pics when I open this thread!

This seams to be a trend for AH sim-tards. Look back through this thread and you'll see a bunch of ugly dudes with pretty wives. It's kind of a strage connection.
Mw007 above on this page also did pretty damn well.
(Sorry guys, take it as an insult against you, or a compliment toward your wife, either way its a bit true)
:)

If I look like John Malcovich, Mw007 looks like Whitey Ford... LOL
Ripsnort has me beat though... My wife doesn't like to play AH herself...LOL She does, however, let me grab wheelies on my motorcycle while she's riding on the back... :-)
I've since curtailed this activity though. It's one thing to dump your bike when you're alone... But if your wife was on the back? I could do without having to bear the guilt for something like that. I guess getting older inevitably curses us with a degree of common sense...LOL

Grim, wife just "tried it out" once, and only once. Naturally I had to snap a pic! Kodak moment! :) I'll see if I can dig it up at home. She's been very forgiving ever since my first flight sims back in 1989. Keeps me out of the bars. :D

Hey there Eskimo,
Living in Florida, that T-shirt is a common sight due to Bike Week in Daytona Beach every year here. I'm not quite ready to join the Harley crowd as yet though.
I'm still bitten by the speed bug which requires the classic crotch rocket race type bike. I own a Triumph 955 Daytona which is made in England, not Japan. The plus side to this is that a lot of old Harley guys used to ride Triumphs in the 60's and 70's. I can ride alongside, or park my bike next to a bunch of Harleys without worrying about them taking a dump in a my gas tank...LOL Try that with a Japanese bike :-)

Hey hawk220, it looks like that pic of you by the B-17G was taken at the Museum of Flight and the plane is more than likely the "Nine O Nine". I work at the museum. You should come in and try our new "full motion" simulators that you control. We installed them about three months ago. We can make it so both simulators dog fight each other, so you might want to bring a friend along.
