Title: Tesla 500 mile range Semi will cost more than $200,000
Post by: Mano on August 30, 2022, 11:25:33 AM
Is my prediction
They have already said there will be three electric motors instead of four with same horsepower and torque.
Let the naysayers begin. The electric will never replace the diesel semi :D

How much money does a regular semi truck cost?

New trucks have a price that starts at around $80,000 and can easily go to $150,000 or even more. If you go for a lot of custom-made additions, the price might even reach $200,000.

It would appear the Tesla semi might be near the price range of a Peterbuilt that can Perform the same duty.
Scotty would know more about this subject. He can explain fuel costs, maintence costs And every fee associated with diesel semis.
:salute
Would be interesting to know the full cost of operating both with no government assistance (our money) . Actual cost paying for everything.... no handouts.

That would of course need to include the $20 billion or so in tax subsidies we give the petroleum industry each year.

Hah, for real. Plenty of industries get subsidies...but we'll use EV because it fits the narrative!
I have no problem with that. I said ALL COST. Of course we will include subsidies for electrical and power generation. The number one subsidized item by dollar amount.... that would be $48 billion.

Where I live and using the price of diesel and the price of a kW/h, the "fuel" cost of the electric truck should be about 1/3 of the diesel truck. I will add that electricity is far cheaper in other areas of the country.
BUT,
It's not uncommon for quality built and well maintained diesel trucks to do as much as 750,000 miles in their service life...some even more. The jury is out on the long term cost of maintenance on electric motors and lithium-ion batteries. Also can the generation grid in all areas handle the load of all this new demand - that remains to be seen.

And you can rebuild the engine when the time is appropriate... can you rebuild that battery pack?

Battery pack is the fuel, so the owner of the diesel truck will drill his own well and then refine the oil?
No, electricity is the fuel. Will Etrucks be generating their own electricity? The battery pack is the "fuel tank". That said, the most expensive wear item are the engine for the diesel and the battery pack for the etruck. I figure that because electric motors are relatively maintenance/trouble free. You already knew that... or did you?

You can easily break the $250,000 mark for a new diesel tractor.
Quote
In general, a brand new Kenworth semi truck is about $170,000. The prices of the Kenworth W900, T680, and T880 are $160k, $170k, and 190k respectively. Price varies per model and each model has its own unique specifications and add-ons to give you a true feel of the range Kenworth has to offer.
Brutal heat wave will push California's energy grid to limit during Labor Day weekend
If a Flex Alert is issued, customers will be asked to set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights.

California just asked people not to charge their EVs because of the demand during this heat wave. California has over 1 million registered EVs - 43% of all Evs in the USA. If we can't manage the power grid how do they expect to have 30 million or so EVs?
As long as I can remember the power grid has been messed up in California and they never fixed it. Rolling blackouts have been common for decades.
So what they doing to address this ahead of banning all new gas cars by 2035?

Seems the USA wants to be self-sufficient on oil and gas. I guess the PTB's didn't think electricity was that important.

Seems odd. All the EV manufacturers that I checked warrant the battery for 10 years.
Right now one of my vehicles is sitting at 180k. As a matter of fact it is the same model year as the one in the article. With proper maintenance the drivetrain will last it another, possibly much more. They know how many cycles the batteries will last. It’s a fixed number. No matter what you do nothing will change that number all you can do is drive less.

Not only can the battery packs be rebuilt they are also capable of being recycled. There’s a Canuck company that’s now recycles lithium batteries, something close to 95% of the materials are recycled and turned into new products and batteries.
As for recharge times well with regulations on how many hours a driver can drive without a rest stop it becomes moot. 500miles is very close to or over the limit of hours a driver can do.
In Ontario a driver can’t drive more than 13 hours in a day so I guess that’s about 780 miles, let’s call it 800 so 1 stop to eat/rest and relive while it recharges seems a reasonable thing to do.
Now brakes and tires will be the biggest cost on using an EV semi, or close to it.

Anyone have the ecological hit the environment takes with all the needed mining just for the batteries? How about their disposal?
If they dropped the climate crap, some might buy into it as just an alternative to gas powered
It's the switch to this or nothing mandate is what is the problem for some of us

What about tail pipe and smoke stack emissions used in transporting the materials and refining them for the battery, the emissions used in the mining process for the battery material and the material the cars are made of, and used in the construction of the electric cars? Thats not taken into the equation because that would make the cars not very green, but people arent supposed to question or know that. They are told to buy this right now or the world will end if you dont.

We use almost no coal to produce electricity and we have more than enough oil/ng for the next 100 years or so.
I’m not forgetting anything, you brought up the environmental impact on mining lithium,it’s silly excuse as any type of energy extraction is gonna have an impact, the really question is do you want to leave an improved environment and do you care what the next generation has to deal with?
All for the sake of demasculating the types of vehicles we drive,I still use a car powered by Dino wee wee but that doesn’t mean I’m against the EV types. Personally I’m more for hydrogen tech but it’s not as ready as electricity is.
I bet you use cordless tools….hmm maybe a switch back to corded or even gas powered ones should be in order.

If interest rates get up where they should be, people will be claiming interest in their taxes again like we did back in the 80's
Need to keep value in the dollar or ev noise will be the very least of anyones concerns
Like punishing the Saudis by removing our military...you know the deal made in the 70's creating the petrol dollar which has allowed the average American to live way beyond their means via cheap credit...
Let that change and the dollar lose reserve currency status and the toilet truly flushes..

How many children are used in the mining of needed battery elements?

Technology disrupters make obsolete companies go Out of business.
In the video they do not mention the inclines the loaded truck had to endure. Crossing the Sierra Nevadas will cost more energy than traveling on highway that is completely flat.

I remember Red Sovine's song "Phantom 309" Telling the story of a courageous truck driver swerving off the road to save the life of a bunch of kids broken down in a bus.
Big Joe's Grandson became a truck driver and it was at those same crossroads driving a new Tesla Semi truck while on autopilot watching some videos on the 22 inch touchscreen that gave him more than a "Semi", another bus load of kids was broken down. However this time wonders of modern technology kicked in to save them kids from man's own complacent self and immediately through various subroutines and thought experiments the autopilot made the same decision old Big Joe would've made (it was a very brave computer in that truck). The Semi plowed off the road through the ditch and into a concrete telephone pole at 80mph.
Somehow Big Joe Jr was still alive, for the safety advancements in modern semi trucks had saved everyone's life that night, for a moment. Whilst attempting to pause the lewd video still playing on screen Big Joe Jr took his time to thank the lord our god the Elongated Muskrat for building a safe truck with such a morally right autopilot system.
At that moment a 69 megaton explosion is recorded as the lithium ion battery detonates in the rainy weather, killing everyone with in a 100 mile radius. No one bothers writing a folk song

For any fool that believes 30min charging will only take 30 minutes…
Please visit the Pilot Truck Stop at 400 Haynes St, Sturbridge, MA 01566.
It takes an hour to get to the fuel pumps to spend five to seven minutes refueling.
Do the math and add twenty five minutes minimum to every truck recharging and see the monstrous implications of battery powered logistics.
500+ miles range is desirable for 8 hours of driving diesel semis. 700miles is desirable for 11hr DOT limit per day.
Dress up a turd all you want with bells and whistles but it is still a turd.
And yes Elon Musk is a hereditary degenerate and card carrying tribe member with access to unlimited fiat currency directly from the central banking mafia thus I must agree…
Elon Musk is gay.

Idk its probably the only station in that area that can fit a truck and trailer of that size. These truck drivers lack the skills to drift sideways 40 mph into the 2-4 diesel pumps at most gas stations that are designed for vehicles no longer than 20-30 feet.

Well, we know it is quite a bit heavier. To help make it competitive, the government changed the max load rules... but only for electric trucks. If those loads are OK on our roadways, then why not OK it for all trucks. Normally you would have to get permits for an overload. There are safety concerns and then the ability of roadways to hold up to the burden.

I have not driven one on the highway. I have backed them in way back when I worked in a meat market and the truckers went on strike. The fellas driving during that time had trouble backing into the docks. Funny thing is some of the union guys did too. They just didn't ask for help.
My step dad was a trucker and owner operator for many years.

Interesting, now do total cost of ownership, since that's what Semi owners care about.
Back when my step Dad was owner /operator, the best paying loads were longer distance. I would assume that is still fact.
I would also assume that since we EV car batteries need replacement in approximately 8 to 9 years, that the trucks would be much sooner due to cycles. How much is a battery replacement on the trucks?

The Texas oil and natural gas industry alone paid $24.7 billion in taxes and royalties. The royalties go to schools, counties, cities, and the state.
You can't be serious. Oil and gas producers are a net consumer of government money in the US (taxes minus subsidies), not a net payer. And its not even close.

subsidy = I give you some money tax break = I don't take as much money off you
1 zillion dollars in tax break is the same as a zillion subsidy. around here the major who have a million retirement bonus to the city accountant to retire because she was being investigated. build warehouse in every empty lot an some mobile home parks. guess who paid for the tax breaks and subsidy, we did higher ten rents, more traffic higher property taxes.
and who knows when they're gonna pay property taxes, all contracts are confidential.

1 zillion dollars in tax break is the same as a zillion subsidy.
Not it's not. A subsidy is paid to you from government money that the government already has, regardless of your businesses revenue or profit or tax bill.
A tax break requires your business to generate revenue/profit/a tax bill, it is effectively a discount on the money you have to give the government - from money that you already have.
For example: Tesla, in the USA they claim they operate at a loss. They pay no tax (not a tax break btw), and receive subsides for each car produced (the subsidy operates completely independently of the tax liability). If the US government were to give Tesla a tax break it would be worthless as their tax liability is already at zero.
Weta (film making company in NZ). They generate a revenue and profit, they are liable for say $100 million in tax, the government gives them a 'discount' on the tax (a tax break) and they pay $60 million. No subsidies.
Assuming the money used to pay tax is yours before the tax is calculated or due/calculated is something you might expect in a fully communist country.

One thing that I don't get is that some people have almost a personal vendetta and hatred of Tesla. I don't like the fact that we are being pushed into electric vehicles, but I really think Tesla is a remarkable company.
I think what Elon musk has accomplished so far in his life is just astounding. I remember back in the day when he sold PayPal and I heard that he was going to spend his money on building a rocket to go to Mars. I thought he was going to lose all of his money on a stupid venture. The guy is amazing and what he's done is incredible, even if you don't like the guy I think you have to acknowledge that.
But I would love for Tesla to succeed. I would love for this truck to succeed. It seems like some people just want to fail. I don't get that. Like what is it to them if it makes it or fails. Rooting for someone to fail is kind of not a good trait in my opinion.

The power grid wont fail, but charging those ev's will get harder before it gets better.
Right now electric utilities are having a hard time keeping up with normal demand for new transformer installations. There is a huge shortage of transformers across the industry and many attribute that shortage to the raw materials used in battery production. I deal with that fact on a daily basis. It is slightly better than in past months, but still very far behind the normal production numbers of transformers pre-ev.
So by all means, buy your ev if you want one. But I will stick with my gas guzzling fume emitting raw power fossil fueled mode of transportation for years to come.

Interesting fellow. This thread is about Electric Semis.
He appears to be an auto mechanic. BEV's require almost no maintenance. He may believe his shop is being threatened by BEV's and that is the reason for his anger. ICE vehicles will be around for a very long time and he will be busy in the foreseeable future. Auto dealers may have less repairs and maintenance to do if they sell less ICE vehicles and be forced to reduce their staff, but his independent shop is not in danger of going extinct.
The Tesla semi is another technology disruptor. Pepsi is having success with their trucks in Sacramento and Modesto, California. It will not take Tesla very long to capture market share. The cost to operate is significantly lower than a diesel simi in terms of lower maintenance, lower fuel costs, and ease of handling. It's 500 mile range fully loaded is adequate for long hauls and for short delivery runs. Tesla will roll out a Mega charging network in a timely fashion exactly as they did for the Supercharger network.
I am not familiar with the electric grid in Australia. I am curious about their coal consumption to generate electricity and the numbers he presents. I hope he will cite his sources in future videos with a link below in the comment section.
Reducing emissions from vehicles will help the environment in any country, especially in China, who might be the worlds biggest polluter and biggest consumer of coal for energy production and it is a serious problem. I visited China before the pandemic. The pollution in every city we visited was absolutely horrible. A very large percentage of the locals wore a mask when outside. On the bad days it is similar to how L.A. used to be and like Mexico City is today. BYD and Tesla are leading the BEV race in China.
I see another obstacle that needs to be addressed as mentioned by John Cadogan. Emissions from electricity generators needs to be reduced. Alternate energy sources need to be created that are non polluting. On this I agree.
Tesla's EV's are not heavier than ICE vehicles. The Model 3 is actually lighter than the BMW 4 series. The Model Y is not heavier than it's counterparts in the SUV crossover category. He is dead wrong and misinformed.
The Tesla Semi is heavier than it's diesel counterpart. The Model S and Model X are heavier than their counterparts, but their numbers are pretty low compared to the amount of 3's and Y's that have been produced. John Cadogan may not agree with what is happening and if he had drove a long range model 3 or Y for one year he might have a very different opinion on BEV's. I did not catch what BEV he drove for one year. I would guess it might be a Nissan Leaf. The Leaf is a local car only and it takes a long time to charge.
I have made lots of long trips in my Model 3. Charging has never been an issue. Tesla rolled out a charging network really fast. They are on all major highways. You can travel coast to coast or up and down either coast. Charging on average takes about 30 minutes. I only charge to 90 percent. No need to charge to 100 per cent. When you get close to your destination you charge to 60 or 70 per cent and keep going because you can charge when you get there.
The Tesla Semi is still in it's infancy. It has a long way to go. Drivers will be pleased as there is no diesel smell, no engine sound, and acceleration is instant. It also climbs moderate grades like Donner Pass and Grapevine going 65 mph. There are lots of video on YouTube if you are interested. The Diesel Semi cannot do that.
:salute

Hope they find a vehicle that actually reduces emissions some time soon. We do not have any available, except maybe hydrogen, at this time.

Saw where they are putting sails on ocean crossing container ships now to reduce pollution...noting that the routes may have to be changed so more wind is available...wtf?
Next it will be hooking up a couple of horses to our cars to increase fuel efficiency...
Battery weight will replace cargo in these semis ..less for more
But it's a great boogeyman...the best so far imo

Electric vehicles (EVs) are more efficient than their gasoline-powered counterparts1. An EV electric drive system is only responsible for a 15% to 20% energy loss compared to 64% to 75% for a gasoline engine1.The number of fires per 100,000 sold vehicles is2: Electric vehicles: 25 fires Gas-powered cars: 1,530 fires Hybrid cars: 3,475 fires
there goes his number one complain.

Very nice semp. What's the efficiency ratio of the powerplant that makes the electricity?

Following this logic, conventional explosives are more deadly than nuclear ones simply because their has been more of them detonated and more people killed by conventional bombs.

Flood victims from the hurricane are being told to move their ev out of their garages as salt water causes them to burst into flames...
Next story was about some invention that drills up through the bottom to reduce the 100's of gallons of water to put out a ev fire by drilling directly into the battery compartment and shooting the water directly on them...down to only around 500 gallons...
Can't wait to get stuck on I-4 while one of these burn themselves out...

If the USA wants to force everyone to drive electric toys, then according to this article nuclear power would be the most efficient
But nuclear dont fit the green greed agenda so its ignored
For green fanactics, electricity is the only acceptable form of energy, but all the methods to create it are big no no. If some nuthelmet creates a way to use electricity to create electricity, then all the exstinktion rebellions and greedpeacesers will be happy, not before. Doomsday is coming... :devil

a 1k fridge saves energy over a10 year fridge. less energy less cost.

:rofl :rofl :rofl
Bold of you to assume a new fridge will last 10 years, ours lasted 6. Like most new things they're designed to fail.
That 30 year old fridge that uses another 500$ a year in electricity is still more cost effective and better for the planet. If we gave one toejam about the trying to keep this planet clean we wouldn't design toejam to fail so it can be thrown into a landfill every 5-10 years.
But none of this is about saving the planet or the "environment", its about milking a cash cow.

all my fridges have lasted more than 10 years. the current one is 2 years and was an improvement over the one we bought in 2010. uses less electricity too.

Wait for one of the boards to fail in it after 2 years. Whoops, thats a $200 board. Whoops, its on backorder from china since we outsourced all this countries manufacturing jobs to a 3rd world communist toejamhole. It will be here in 4 weeks.
But LOOK!!! We have this new fridge in stock and you can have it TODAY!
They haul off the old fridge as courtesy to you so you dont have to deal with it and fix it, selling it for $700. Made a profit on the new fridge and a profit on the used fridge they repaired for $200.

Electricity will become the new oil when the grid hits overload.
Like a drug pusher, its cheap now until you’re hooked, now it cost you.
I’m all about cleaner air, we all experienced how clean the air was during pandemic shutdown, but this product coming before how we power them all is backwards. They should be updating the grid now, not after the fact.
Electricity will be the new oil, maybe worse because we don’t power our homes and biz with gas. All eggs will be in one basket. Home investment will include solar panels and batteries. Otherwise, if you don’t pay your electric bill you lose everything. Green energy will be the only solution, like it or not.

The grid is well past overload. It's at least 20 years behind, in California it's forty years behind. It needs a minimum of ten years of work and $100 billion to catch up. Then it will only be caught up, not ahead. That's assuming they will allow the use of natural gas and nuclear power plants, and update the current coal plants. None of which they want to do.
The problem with batteries and solar panels is that they have a very finite service life. Further, mining for the raw materials is destroying the environment. It's also being done in third world countries, by children. Batteries, solar panels, and wind mill blades simply cannot be recycled with current technology. And the contents of batteries and solar panels destroy the ground and poison the water where ever they are scrapped.
The race to be "green" will poison the planet, and might even trigger the mass extinction event before any asteroid or thermonuclear war can.
All for nothing, and inexcusable.

Electricity is already expensive. The free market ALWAYS delivers just enough. If demand outstrips demand, prices must rise.

I’ll agree with 50% of that. Batteries aren’t required for solar or wind power. Its just helpful. I know some peeps who have both, they now sell their extra power to utility companies. Truth.
I think solar or wind powers farms is ugly. Lung cancer is more ugly.
Here’s the problem with some ppl’s opinions. To know what is wrong one must first know whats right. If one refuses data they work off cynical conspiracies that carry no or slanted facts.
They are great at finger pointing with a blind fold, but offer zero solutions.
Live next to steel mills, watching a cancer pandemic and you’ll learn real quick pollution kills. Talking about what happened 30k yrs ago is an evasion. There are things 30k yrs aho that contradict what people use to excuse. This is now,….”this,… is this.“ ( Movie, Deer Hunter)
I have no use for people who whine, but offer no working solutions. They tend to cling to blanket answers, when a wider view is needed. Think in a box, remain in a box. Blanket answers are for lazy minds.
<shrug> no offense intended.
Pretty sure earth is culling the herd. Survival if the fittest, mentally. Darwin. Go against the mastodon with a butter knife and your gene pool of stupid is over. :)

There is less $$$ in green power than oil mongers, also less trouble and mire stable markets.
We’d put Arabia nations, Iran and Russia out of biz.
Fleeting thoughts from the village idiot.
Actually, no.
There's massive profit in so called "green" power.
You'll put neither Russia nor China out of business, you'll make both infinitely more powerful and wealthy. They control massive amounts of the raw materials for batteries and solar panels. And they quite literally rape the earth obtaining them, while doing it with slave labor. They're trashing their weaker neighbors to gain even more control. There are millions of people being pretty much forced to mine those materials, in their own nation, for pennies a day, while the environment around them is destroyed by the mining. Their water is being poisoned to the point of not being potable, nor supporting fish they desperately need to eat. So, no, you're not making markets more stable, nor making less trouble. Unless you think China invading Taiwan, and Russia invading neighbors, is more stable and less trouble.
The stuff in solar panels is every bit as bad as the stuff in batteries. And every bit as impossible to recycle or dispose off. And yeah, you actually do need batteries for solar to work. The sun rarely shines 24/7.
There are plenty of other solutions. But they do not make the "right people" wealthy, nor do they give those same people the control they seek.
Fossil fuels can be made cleaner and more efficient. but that is literally being intentionally discouraged, instead of incentivized. The government is choosing winners, and making losers, at t he expense of the tax payers, and the planet.

We’ll just disagree.
You css as n tap off the grid when the sun is not producing. They can store energy in one place.
If fuel could could be made cleaner they would have to retain oil power, i know an exe at a refinery.
Those countries won’t be supply us, they would just supply themselves , not ship it.
Oils drills, pipelines and fracking don’t destroy?
Opps for hot, modt the chemicals only in other nations are for computers chips
What I hear is big oil propaganda. And we know where their donations go. Thats the real machine this prohibits logical thinking.
We hear this fluff about the pipelines going through as reservations, promises promises, then there were several breaks that turned the land for a generation. As warned and predicted
Peopke jeep swallowing that propaganda whole. If it could be made cleaner, they wouldn’t be lying about it, they’d just do it. Hence 80s Unleaded gad.
Replace fuel with corn and corn goes up along with farm land that grows edible food.
We are just going to disagree. Good luck on the venture to do nothing.
Go ahead mention any skirmish in the world and oil skyrockets, just based on a prediction that increases profit. P has had us n a 100 yr choke hold, on several levels.

No, electricity is the fuel. Will Etrucks be generating their own electricity? The battery pack is the "fuel tank". That said, the most expensive wear item are the engine for the diesel and the battery pack for the etruck. I figure that because electric motors are relatively maintenance/trouble free. You already knew that... or did you?
Just fleeting thought a trailer could hold solar panels on top.
To be honest sometimes at work I’m and eye in the sky. Many times I’ve signed many NDAs because large corps want me to recored their confrences. I formation kept from public. A lot of marketing, which is kinda sick. I’ve even recored Russians, and while I don’t know what they say, they certainly have each other. Big pharma,…, many industries. Marketing and oharma are somewhat disturbing. Medical is torture, accounting is sleep worthy. They are like mini college courses, exposed to a lot.

You havent seen it becausee any evidence of opposition of the people in power and the agendas they push are immediately removed from the internet and the persons that post it also have their online existence silenced. Look at covid. Any opposition about the virus or how the "vaccine" hurts people were quickly deleted and never allowed to be spoken about ever again because it goes against what the people in power were telling the general population on what they are supposed to believe. Now things are coming out of the woodwork on how the deleted things are actually true. This post will get reported here because I spoke out against the agendas and having an opinion that is different then what certain people tell you that you must believe is wrong and will get silenced for speaking out
