That big 109 is sexy.

Some of those landings had me cringing though.  Looked like a bit of a crosswind.

There were a few that were really good - I wonder how many RC crashes are stall/spin related  :D

Lots of ground looping

Ground effect gets a lot of R/C pilots who approach too fast.  They think they have a good angle on their approach, then they get into the ground effect and the plane won't settle, so they try to fly it onto the ground.  Bad piloting in my book.  When I was teaching guys to fly R/C, I taught good approaches with a proper flare at the end to set down.

Quoted for extreme truth.

I was largely self taught on R/C electrics, and when I finally got around to taking some proper lessons from one of the best R/C guys around town, the bad habits I had acquired were nearly all related to set up and subsequent landing as Factor stated.  Once you have been taught the proper way to do it, the rest of the flying, at least for me, became easier as anticipating that landing wasn't going through my head the whole time I was in the air doing beginners maneuvers.

Do a google search for fly eagle jets.  I was in Taiwan a few years back, and it's like their national pastime I swear.  They close down sections of highways on the weekend to let guys fly these 1/5 and larger scale jet fighters off of them.  I've seen an F15 doing probably 180 MPH one day, it was pretty amazing.

I will be at Joe Nall this year. We are flying the Super Connie, a B25 and a B-17, and the Gee Bee R3

The guy in the pic built the aircraft. He is in Vietnam. It was just test flown for the first time three days ago.

It flies on 4 of the new OS 33s

Fantastic!

I've gone up to Palmdale/Lancaster, CA a couple times to watch them do their thing out there.  Pretty amazing projects and dedicated people in it that take to just one-notch short of the real deal.

I want that Yellow Cub. Some of them are huge. In some countries once above a certain weight and size. They have to be registered like full size aircraft. That's the rule here in Ireland. There was a case here some time ago when a big model got away from it's owner and flew off. Sometime later at the airport an airline pilot reported a model aircraft parked on a taxiway. Somehow it ran out of fuel over the airport and made a passable landing almost making the runway. Clearly there might be a bit of AI in that model.

The whole incident was the subject of a full accident report which is almost funny to read. Yet the potential for disaster was there.

I presume there's some form of failsafe in those big models.

There is a guy in my town with an enclosed utility trailer with this name on it

J'Tech RadioWave

http://www.jtecrc.com/

Looks to be 1/4 scale.

There is a members' airfield for RC in the farmlands of the area near Pine Island, NY

Members pay a fee for maintaining the field, taxes, insurance, etc.

The turf area where the modelers airfield is, the area around it, grows turf for homeowner's new lawns.

There is one guy I know flying Aces High that is in to the RC hobby.

this is another of those hobbies id like to start in on, how hard is it to get the hang of and *gulp* what are we looking at for start up cost?

Merc60, if you've never flown R/C before, you're in luck as it has never been cheaper to learn how with the electric planes out there now.  I'd buy a decent 4 ch electric high wing trainer and a decent 6 or 8 channel Spektrum hopper radio, and then just head out to your closest field and ask for an instructor.  For less than 4 or 5 hundred you can have an excellent beginners set up to learn with.  Even getting into gas/other fuel powered stuff isn't nearly as bad as it was when I first tried my had at it back in the early 90's, at least 2x cheaper now IMO.  Also, if you've got some guys and xtra $ you can be self taught to a certain extent, get a 3 channel electric "throw away" type trainer and just go out and fly it.  If you can fly AH decently, you should pick it up fairly quickly, and the planes are tough to kill beyond repair.  You'll eventually want some instruction though, I sure did.

As far as getting into large scale or jet stuff...hah...the one guy I know with a scale jet fighter could buy my car with what he's got into everything.

edit: Condor, that P51 is a beauty, you should build a nice 109 at that scale :).  Nice landing too, very good video.

I did some wing work on a cub about that size. The guy gave me another plane with a 6' span complete with radio, servos, and engine.

You need one of these engines for your WW2 airplanes.

I will be on the 3D flight line on the southern end of the property right next to the huge gazebo. Heres a picture of my trailer.

Look me up when you get there.

I like to scratch build...  This is a company with a wide variety of plans available which they will scale up or down for you.  An experienced builder will adjust the plans as needed to give the strength needed in critical areas.

Man I miss pica. I wish someone would pic up producing their kits. I had a 1/5 scale ymf with a Tt .91 four stroke. Wonderful plane, fun to build.

Man, I used to love the Pica Duellist. That was a bad twin machine.
