Title: If You Built Your Machine Today
Post by: Shuffler on July 19, 2021, 12:24:37 PM
On another forum, a few folks with recently built machines started looking to see what it would cost to build today. They used PCpartspicker site to run the tab. Many were shocked at how much it would be today. I ran mine and found it would cost $5,168 and change... substantially more than I paid for parts back then. This also fluctuates massively. Just yesterday it showed over $6,000. All that change is the video card being found cheaper today.

How do yall stack up?

I built mine just under the wire before the first shut down and stuff went crazy. 3900x build less a video card because I knew the next gen would be out in October and I'd just wait. Then THAT happened! Still don't have the video card as I'm not paying that craziness. Recycled my 2060. Think my build was like 1500 altogether, new 011-D case and RGB coolness. I'm askeert to even look at what it'd cost me now. Everything I see "on sale" is way more than I spent in 3/19. Hell I wish I could fall into a 30 series card so I can sell the 2060 and buy a new truck or something!

As the 2070 is double what I paid for it in 2019, I wouldn't consider a new build these days

Video card prices are criminal

^ This. ^

Not only the video cards although the bitcoin craze caused a spike in demand. Due to the production first cramped by Covid and the increased demand caused by people being forced to stay home due to Covid there's lack of semiconductors which are the basic components of all electronics including cars, computers, consoles, home theatres, phones...

I've got a 10 year old HDD sitting in place of a dead SSD and the rest of the build is circa 2015...

I can't see even brand new replacement like for like parts fetching much even with the bit coin nonsense on my PC.

Literally a Radeon R9 390, an i5 4690k (soft clocked to hell and back) and 16GB RAM holding it together, bet on the picker site it'd be sub-$500.

I just paid $440 for a GTX 1660 Super card, which is about $100 more than the pre-shortage price.  My 1060 died a few months ago, so had to fall back on the Quadro board that came with the computer  and I got tired of playing without the eye candy.  The 1660 is an upgrade from the 1060 and runs everything maxed out (except Environment Mapping) and never drops under 60 fps.  Hated to pay the price, but glad to have the graphic effects and decent frame rates again -- especially in the clouds, the clouds were killing the Quadro and that was the one effect that I couldn't turn off.

How did you get ahold of a 3080?

I signed up for stock notifications with EVGA and when the product became available they notified me that they were holding the item for me for 8 hours for purchase. If I did not purchase the item in 8 hours it would go to the next person on the list. It took 3 months from the time I singed up to the time I was able to purchase.

Ah OK, thanks.  I think I had signed up for every 3070 and 3080 model that EVGA makes.   Feels like I've been a lot waiting longer than 3 months.  I wanna say it was last November, but not sure anymore/

Yeah, just did a search on the model number - my notification email is dated Feb 8th:

My current card is an EVGA GTX 1080, bought it directly from them.   So I'm even a repeat customer.   Go figure...

What I shared on the OP post was just the computer, no peripherals. No keyboard, monitor, or controllers. Just inside the box.

I upgraded my machine this week. Ordered a 1 TB internal SSD. Nice! It's just a card 2 inches by 1 inch. Hooks right into the MB. That was a surprise! Cheap!

Windows 10 on a thumb drive. Instant page loading. Smoother graphics in the game. Quiet and fast.

 Win10
Samsung 980 1 TB internal SSD
 AMD Ryzen 7 3700x
 G. Skill DDR4 16 GB

 Old components
 Corsair CX750 Power Supply
 EVGA GF GTX 1070
 1 TB 10,000 HD
 Full tower case
 Samsung Curved 28 inch monitor

Mayhem, what are your cooling solutions? And have you assembled that case yet?

All air cooling.

My system has

3 140mm red led bottom intake fans (filtered) plus my Power supply fan is in the botom.
3 120mm red led front intake fans (filtered)
4 120mm red led top exhaust fans
4 120mm red led bottom right side intake fans (filtered)
4 120mm red led top right side exhaust  fans
1 140mm red led rear exhaust  fan

My CPU Cooler is a Noctua NH-U12A Tower cooler with 2 Noctua 120mm fans in a Pull Push configuration Blowing air from the front to the back and out through the 140mm Fan.

I also have a memory cooler.

It's all in a Thermaltake w100 case done up in a Star Wars: Sith/Darth Vader/Imperial theme

I have pictures of it my facebook and the Damned Discord Server. I can post it to the AHIII Facebook if you want to see it.

How did you get ahold of a 3080?

I already answered this but Just as a heads up I got another stock notification from EVGA about the availability of a RTX3080 Card. They again gave me an 8 hour window to purchase it, So I got it for a squad-mate. It was an EVGA XC3 Ultra Gaming RTX 3080 for around $938 US with taxes (California so it's around 9%) and shipping.

You can get these cards but you may have to wait. However, on the plus side by signing up for stock notifications and by waiting and getting the GPU directly from the manufacturer you avoid paying scalper prices. This is my second card since November and I'm not even signed up for all the cards (Only the high end 3080 and 3080ti cards.)

Nice box but your total cost is probably way out of reach for most

about 5K +- $500 not including the stuff I already had and not including controllers that is just the box and what is in it. However, I have about $1K In storage alone.

Ya I know I'm kinda bragging ..... but its so pretty in a Dark side kinda way :D

I went to EVGA's website at https://www.evga.com/

I clicked on products and then the card series I wanted say a 3080ti ...

I look at the product I want and select "Auto Notify".

You will get a popup asking for your First name Last name and Email Address and it uses reCaptcha protection so be careful with your add and pop up protection.

Fill it out and press submit ... I've done this for all the 3080 and 3080ti cards .. I've gotten two cards from them doing this, one for me, and one for a squad mate.

I was always an AMD guy for over 20 years and now on a budget I picked up a used system from a streamer and it was just about a year old. Came with I7 processor not sure what gen a ssd and a hdd which I am not used to yet with having 2 drives. Win 10 and for graphics a 980gtx Ti and I am running games at  custom and high end graphics with out a glitch or stutter maybe I need to download Aces again and see what I get with this pc and I play a game with over 1000 people playing at onetime and different servers

System cost only 700 bucks and got a 32in Asus monitor for the wife in the deal

Mols, that really sounds like a good deal, the video card alone is worth half of it regarding the current crazy prices!

If you want to know the gen of your i7, open the Task Manager/Performance tab (right click the Taskbar or press Ctrl-Alt-Del or...). The thousands tell the generation. The latest is currently the 12th which shows as i7-12###. For being able to upgrade the system to Win11 (no hurry, 10 will be supported up to 2025) the gen should be 8th or newer.

I've got a GTX 980 with a 4th gen i7-4790 and it runs the games I want to play very well.

Thanks Biz I am thinking it’s a later I7 cause when I check the specs out before I made the deal the system was worth more with these easy prices and the think I struck a great Deal Mobo is an Asus and was always a fan of them

I recently upgraded my old intel 4690, 16gig memory ddr3.

Now I use a AMD Ryzen 7 5800x, 32gig dd4 , and a x570s motherboard from MSI

The graphic card had to wait due to cost.

I got quite a boost how fast the OS loads, and the cpu is quiet @4.4 ghz on all cores, and things connected to the USB responds a bit faster, specially the keyboard.

In IL2 I did not get any more FPS, @ 2k due to the cap of my old 1080 graphic card, but the FPS is more consistent than before.
