Anybody have one yet? Planning on it soon?
Just curious. I get to stand on the sidelines and watch the parade go by, so to speak
-
My X6800 Extreme arrived yesterday. I plan on building the system this weekend, if I have time.
-
we want a full report and bench when your done ..:D
-
What are the specs on your Conroe system Skuzzy? What is the verdict? How does it run AH?
-
It's not together yet. I got a nasty case of food poisoning this weekend. Been praying to the porcelian Cod for relief. Been up all night wondeting which end was going to win the race.
-
eeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwww hope ya get better :huh

At least you had that as an option.

Get well soon, Skuzzy!
PS: If you dont feel better quick, go see a Doc. Food poisoning is not something to take lightly. Trus me, i know more about that than I ever cared ;).

Reminds me of one of my favorite lines from Frasier -- and typing it out cant hope to make it as funny as the first class delivery did:
Dad: Yeah, the dog's name is Eddie....we call him "Eddie Spaghetti."
Frasier: Is that what he likes to eat?
Dad: Nah, he has worms.
-
lmao sim, what a great show. btw, what a conroe is?
-
The cutting edge, worldbeating chip-o-the-month....Intel's AMD beater.
And its $1255 for the processor alone at Newegg.....
-
That's for the 6800 Extreme. I did not pay that much, but it is the most expensive of all the Conroe's. Clock unlocked so it will be some fun.
As I build a computer once every 3 to 5 years, I usually go for the top of the line, so it will last.
Here is the parts list:
Motherboard: ASUS P5WDG2-WS
CPU: Intel X6800 Extreme
RAM: 2GB of PC6400 DDR2-800 Crucial RAM
Video Card: HIS Radeon X1900XTX 512MB
Those are the main items. I will retain my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum sound card, Sony Dual layer DVD burner, Sony DVD-ROM, case and power supply from my old system.
I am feeling better today. Heck, I actually managed to eat some solid food today and kept it down. WOOT! Funny how you appreciate the little things, like eating, when you can't do it for a couple of days. :)
On the other hand, I know far more about pooping and spewing than I care to know and will not miss the later at all, and looking forward to the former returning to a state more consistent with solid waste matter.

Got it together yet skuzzy? I'm intrested in a review on AH and conroe .:)
-
Punt... Skuzzy? Word?
-
Got the hardware all together Saturday, and spent most of Sunday reloading software. Have not had a chance to run much of anything yet.
Although, if the installation performance is any indication, this pup is bloody quick. The Seagate vertical recording drives (dual 320GB) seem to be really quick as well.
I hope to finish up installation of all the software tonight and start actually using it.
EDIT: Forgot to mention. This thing runs very cool. Idle holds around 35C and the highest it gotten yet is 42C. Anxious to see what happens when AHII is loaded up.

If you ship me the system now, I'll cease my voodoo chants that sickened you!
Dont not mess with a jealous IT geek!
(....resumes chanting....)

Forget the voodoo, i got WICCAN CHICKS with broom sticks!
lol Good luck Skuzz im wanting to here also!

Wiccan chicks get there spells preboxed , ya gotta use Real Witches :D
Or Raise up Mr Crowley .

Any particular reason for choosing that motherboard? I haven't really started looking into the Conroe MB options and would like to hear what you know on the subject.
-
I got it $20 cheaper than the Deluxe version.
I have not played AH with it yet. Been busy with video encoding. Easily twice as fast as my previous system (3.4Ghz Northwood).
Getting ready to try out the AVIVO stuff from ATI and see if the quality is as good.
-
Looking for AH running update please.

AH tests are coming. I just have to take home my controller. I never have played AH from home.

Your new Conroe must be keeping you away from this thread.
It's either so much fun... or it's driving you nuts. :)

Quite the observation, hehehe
Considering all the rave reviews on newegg, I'm guessing he's having too much fun. Either that or that pesky thing... whatsitcalled-- work! Yes... what I'm supposed to be doing now (*checks over shoulder quickly*)

MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Skuzzy,
Is it true that the entire Aces HIGH game is being hosted on your conroe PC now?

I got a Conroe 2.4. It overclocked to 3.0 without any special tweaking and runs cool and stable. It wouldn't boot with the multiplier increased from 9 to 10 but it's happy with the FSB at 1300.
Motherboard: ASUS P5WDH
CPU: Intel E6600
RAM: 2GB of PC6400 DDR2-800 Corsair RAM
Video Card: Radeon X1900XT 512MB
-
Well how well does it run AH?
And at what settings.
Bronk
-
With V-synch on I get a nice solid 60 FPS out of it. :)
With the vid card set for performance, the AH graphics sliders on default, 1600x1200 resolution and 1024 textures, the low fps over forests is 190 and the high so far looking up is 617. With the graphics sliders on max it has dropped to 98 over forests.
I haven't tried it at lower resolutions yet.
It'll be interesting to see how high Skuzzy can OC the 2.93
My basic 3D Mark score is 6202.
-
Bump for Skuzzy-one's results :)
-
With these dual core CPUs now, is it still necessary to worry so much about services running in the background etc or is it becoming less and less important?
-
You still want to worry a little, but if you have a conroe, you don't have to worry "as much".
I just fear how many crappy processes they're going to jam onto PCs now that they have the conroe to run 'em all! *shudder*
Plus once Windows Vista is out you'll need every last transistor on a conroe just to run the OS, so then you'll have to worry about the background processes again. Until Vista, relax, and enjoy :)
-
I'm never going to Vista. EVAR!
-
Just wait til HalfLife3 or Doom 6 shows up for Vista-Only PCs... Eh? What if AH3 goes Vista-Only? Eh? Eh??? THEN you'll get it.
-
I will never own a copy of Vista and it will never find a home on any of my computers, I do not care how many programs are *Vista* only. It just means I will not buy them.
-
Never say never. You guys are funny!:rofl :D
Btw I propably go to vista as soon as it comes.:t

which verson ??? there going to have 8+ different versons ... (duh M$ cant make just one verson compatable with all pc's )
Oh yea we're already Catching Virous's in Vista ... there was two major SP's added in the last couple of weeks .... looks like the Bug Writers are winning ... The AV programs arnt even close to being caught up for this either .

My condolences. I just do not feel like adding 2 more gig or RAM to my computer just to run another operating system, which does absolutely nothing more for me than XP does.
Basically, there is no point in it.

So is the damn thing fast or what here??
And btw, I always have a supply of Huggies Baby wipes on hand in the heads at both work and home. I highly recomend this for situations you were having with your bowels and what have you. They pay for themselves 10 times over when you have "one of them" that the only way out is to go get hosed down. Some will laugh and mock for using baby wipes. But you will be the one with fresh backside ready for the day while they stew in their not so fresh bottom regions. Just some helpful advice in times of need.:aok
p.s. try the Shea butter Huggies. Instant good mood:aok

While not the insanity Skuzzy got, I just got the Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor. It's the lowest end one but it's still real nice. Very fast for me. Had a Pentium 4 3.0GHZ on my old PC and this puts it to shame. Only problem is limited mobo choices and some very minor unstability when you overclock it. If you don't overclock to much it's fine. I had mine up to 2.5 and it was kinda rough but at 2.2 it runs as smoothly as 1.86. I'm very happy with it. Also if you followed my drama in other threads my 1st pentium was a 2.66 pentium D. When I had AH on it I got about 50FPS, with this guy I'm at a rock steady 80:eek:
-
Well, I really have not given AH a good going over on it yet. I have a ton of other things I do with my home computer.
I am big into POVRay and do a lot of artwork using it. I had a drawing which took my old computer 9 days to render. This one did it in less than 2 days.
Is it fast? Oh yeah. Video encoding and POVRay stuff hauls tushy. Program compiles are spooky fast as well. Maya is also significantly smoother. I use it for the drawings, then pass off the files to POVRay for rendering.
Audio encoding/mixing is incredible. A lot of disk I/O involved with it, but the Seagate VR (vertical recording) drives running SATA 3.0 cut through that amazingly quick.
I figure you guys would not really care about stuff like that.
I am not going to even try to overclock it. I figure there would only be minimal gain and the risk to the current stability is not worth it.
-
Actually I was going to ask about 3D render times but didn't know you were into it! I do some 3D also and the compile times were what killed me (I didn't even do high-end details, mostly short animation stuff).
-

I'd agree with this also. Like I said I'm running at about 2.2 up from 1.86 but I just have my ASUS control set to auto overclock and that's where it's putting it. For what I do(gaming) I really can't notice any difference between the 2.
-
Skuzzy,
Out of curiosity, do you have a simple setup and script I could use to run the same render you do and get a little comparo on the speed? I'm running an X2 4400.
I haven't used povray for a while though, so I'd need instructions on how to get a run that can be compared. For example, how do you set it up to use both cores?
Anyhow, let me know if that's something you could send me so I could make a comparo run.
-
It did not occur to me to keep the original file eagl. I have since been adding more detail to the drawing. Not real big on handing out my source files for my drawings.
Tell you what. Let me do something I do not care about and post it. The POYRay ini file will need to be altered as I render in 4800x2700 with some other options enabled.
-
Ok. Just let me know what version of povray to install, how to mod any config files, and how to run it in the right mode to get a consistent render time out of it.
-
Gimme a few days to put together a drawing.
I think I am using the 3.6 version of POVRay. I'll check when I get home.
-
By the way, POVRay is still single-threaded.
-
Single threaded... yuk. Seems it would be ideal for multi-threading. Of course, pov-ray is so configurable it seems like it should be easy to run two instances, split the image in half, and combine them after rendering. I know there are distributed rendering projects out there, usually used to split rendering among multiple computers, and those should apply fairly well to multi-cpu systems. Yea it would probably lose some efficiency but it should work better than single thread single core...
-
I actually give a rat's tushy about multi-threading. The most performance gain you can get out of it only amounts to about 10%. Does not justify the cost of the CPU, but it is nice marketing tool.
Of course, if you run little bitty applications (hehe,...right), then you could get better performance gains, but everythin related to Windows is not getting smaller. Quite the opposite. And as everything grows in size, the performance gains for a mutlti CPU system will diminish.
I am working on this new file. Coming along nicely. Probably about half way done.

Dang...missed that Superdud...thanks
-
Please if you could . What size PS do you run with that ?
-
2GB ram? X1900? E6400? I'd say you want at least a 450W PSU. It wouldn't hurt to have 550W or more though.
-
My 3 year old PC died a week or so ago with terminal HDD failure. I was going to upgrade it in January anyway so I decided to do it now, rather than install everything twice.
I got an E6600 with an Asus P5W64-WS Pro motherboard and 2GB PC6400 ram. Went for a 8800GTX video card which just squeezed into my Antec Sonata case with 5mm to spare. I also got a Seasonic 700W modular PSU and a Thermalright Ultra 120 CPU cooler.
At 1600 by 1200 res it runs AH at 85fps with all the sliders at maximum detail and animated water on. It runs pretty cool and is dead quiet so I could overclock it. However as its already maxed out to the monitor's refresh rate, I don't see the point.
Comparing the 8800GTX to my old ATI card, my initial impression was that it seemed a little less sharp in 2d, like it was very slightly out of focus. It is a very minor difference and I don't really notice it now.
AH has hanged once though. The screen went completely white except for the MS program crash window. I'm guessing its the 8800's drivers, they are a bit buggy from what I've read. By all accounts later drivers don't seem much better, so I'm going to wait until a mature set comes out then upgrade them.
-
I've been impressed with the seasonic PSUs. I just got a 600w modular seasonic psu based on internet reviews and the quiet performance from a 430w seasonic psu I already own.
Looking at the price/watt for decent PSUs, if you're gonna build a premium system you might as well go for at least 600w. You're only talking $10-$20 to go from 500ish to 600-700w. The PSUs greater than 700w start getting really expensive (over $200) so if you've already decided to skip the $50 brands, get a nice 600w or larger one. Seasonics are quiet and have a good rep but they're not the only good brand out there. I've heard numerous horror stories about antec power supplies recently, and I think my current thermaltake PSU isn't all that good, so I bought the 600w seasonic to replace it.
-
Thanks guys :aok
I got the Krusty bug I guess . I been saving for 3 months now but still short to build one yet . They sure do cost alot more than 2.5 years ago . I think our money is devalued overseas atm causing this .
Hope this is enough infor for you Krusty
I got a modem and a sound card that I want to transfer to the new box , both pci .
I been looking at
E6600
Nivdia 7950GT
Corsiar memory > to fit the MB off their web site > 2 gig PC6400
At a loss yet what MB to get , last two were Gigabyte boards , they worked for me fine . But reading on the Newegg web site seems they might have more problems now than before .
Greebo that looks like a very nice pc you built . I looked at that MB also , omg 227 USDs atm , Ekk :)
Ya eagl , I read about Antec also , I think they moved offshore to another co making their product . Our Co. is doing that from China , the QC is not so hot . They have nothing but good things to say about the seasonic PSU .
I am wondering how much the prices might drop after the hoidays ?
Anyway I am slowly searching and learning more to figure out what to get .
Donno what to get for HD , my current is a Western Digtal , only 40g as I don't but play AH anyway , 7200 rpm etc .
Lots more to learn
-
I agree that motherboard is expensive. I picked it because various sites rated it as good for overclocking but as I'm not doing that at the moment, it was probably a waste of money. Still, I've got something in reserve if some demanding game comes along I want to play. The other option was an Nvidia 680i based board, but they were out of stock everywhere at the time and I'm not intending to go SLI on the video card.
I like the idea of the Seasonic's second fan coming on only when it gets hot and 700W gives me a bit of headroom. Reliability can suffer if you run a PSU near its maximum rating all the time. The modular cables are really handy too, makes it a lot easier to get good airflow in the case.
Prices are bound to drop in the new year, which is why I was originally going to upgrade then. There are also new top end motherboards and video cards coming out which should foster some competition.
I've gone for WD drives on my new setup, they seem a little bit noisier than the Seagates I was using, although that may be because the rest of the system is quieter. I read somewhere WD drives were more reliable than the Seagates. Performance is pretty similar on most drives unless you go for the pricey WD 10K RPM Raptor. More onboard cache is about the only difference otherwise.
-
I just installed my new seasonic modular 600w. I'm using only 3 of the power cables and it's really quiet. I loaded my computer 100% on both cpu cores, loaded the memory, and ran a graphics test utilility for 2 hours, and the second PSU fan never kicked on. I guess the rest of my system has enough airflow and I'm not stressing the PSU very much.
My mobo is reporting 12.65v on the 12v rail and 3.15 on the 3.3v rail which seems a bit farther off than I expected, but it doesn't fluctuate much so it could just be bad values coming from the mobo. I'll just have to see if the new psu helps my system stability like I hope it will.
-
I am gonna try and get another year or 8 months out of my PC by buying this
7600GT AGP (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150210)
I know it's over 100 bucks Krusty :( but I was weak . I did sell my Nivida 6600 AGP so not a total loss .
AND the good thing , I used the money I had saved to pay off my car so it's all good in the long run . AH runing pretty good atm but down low and in the trees it slows down so I "think" that this should fix it for awhile .
Gonna be looking and saving posts of all the hardware specs to get my new system later . I gonna get that seasonic PSU also when it's time .
thanks for info , really helped me make my mind up
