Title: Land a plane with no elevators but intact stabs.
Post by: Mitchell on April 13, 2014, 03:21:05 PM: Last night while bashing a town I got my elevators shot off by the ack. I was thinking about just bailing until I remembered that landing a plane without elevators was an achievement.
(I think no ailerons should be an achievement too, along with no ailerons and no elevators LOL)

But anyway I bring my bird home by rolling constantly as I'm always pulling up, make a long slow approach and manage to get my crippled jug on concrete. I click end sortie and nothing???
So I look through the achievements thinking maybe I did it already and see that the stabs have to be intact too(one of mine was missing) :mad: REALLY?!?!?! Why the added requirement of intact stabs?

I should have gotten an achievement for landing a plane with no flaps, elevators or ailerons :old:

I want one where you break every part of the plane (excluding the pilot) and land successfully :D

- No flaps - trivial in most of cases
- No ailerons - not a big problems as well (as long as you have effective rudder)

The real challenges are:

- No elevators
- No half a wing

Post by: Coalcat1 on April 16, 2014, 09:24:48 AM: Flew a B17 back 2 sectors after dealing with pickers with no ailerons, elevators and 1 flap while gunning the entire time, that's how I got the achievement :lol I also flew a lanc back to base with no wing tips, a PW, and 1 stab left after making a low alt run on a CV. Not that should be an achievement :D

Post by: Zimme83 on July 11, 2014, 06:06:43 PM: Got this today in B-26. And it just proved how unrealistic the flight caracteristics are in the game. Did a very long final but it was one of my best landings in the game. W/o control surfaces the plane should be unflyable.

Duke Nukem voice - "Yeah, piece of cake." Corsairs have flying saucer-like handling anyway, so any two weeker could have pulled this off.

also shooting down 2 lancs with one half wing should be on the list

I did this in a mossie and actually landed. The torque of those Co-Rotating props really helps to control your slew (and 14,000 ft)....

When I did it I had 1 flap which I could only deploy right at the point of landing to get it slow enough as to not explode when I hit the runway. Wings came off but I landed that beast and posted a score.

This was after surviving 2 262's and a 152 at 20k.

Post by: Gman on February 25, 2015, 08:02:00 PM: When I first started flying the Ki43 a couple months ago, I was ripping off the elevators and ailerons in dives due to not being used to just how fast the pop off after the first creaking warnings. You get a lot more time in 109s and other planes.

Luckily it's pretty easy to get it home without elevators, and really not hard at all with missing ailerons.

Two examples, one close to home and one not. I'm used to the Ki43 now, as soon as I hear the first creak, which I try to avoid now in the first place, it's throttle back and nose up.

Post by: pops04 on January 17, 2016, 08:42:37 AM: I have landed a few Pony's with half a wing missing not really too hard just real slow on the approach, and prior to line up roll to the side of the aircraft with missing part of wing apply opposite rudder to slow aircraft to landing speed line up and crab the aircraft like hell. Try to stay aligned with runway. As flying drops off stop cock engine roll and max brakes. Then have crew chief clean out your seat. Landing without elevators done once but I guess that it didn't apply to the achievement.

Slow down using throttle as you do the nose will drop power up the nose will pull up. If you want to wash off speed but keep it level because your little far out from the runway chop the speed & do constant barrel rolls. Then when your close enough just use the throttle as described above.

A thread running for 2+ years with the original question still unanswered?

It's simply a matter of the definition of "landing". In the sense of the achievement, landing is the point of time ending the flight (.ef), it does not make any requirements for how the plane got there.

On the actual landing (the act of getting the plane back to the ground) it is very easy to break the complete tail (stabs and control surfaces). On .ef such a landing would count if the part "intact stabs" would be missing, which would clearly be the cheap way to get the achievement.

I landed a P-38 with no tail one time. Well, maybe I should have said it landed itself by pure luck and I got a ditch.
