Title: P38 cursor
Post by: Lab Rat 3947 on September 06, 2016, 08:06:05 PM
When the large cursor came out I used MSPaint to modify it to a 24 x 24 size and a P-38 silhouette.

When I dropped it into AHIII, the entire square shows up. I would like to continue using it. How can I make it work?

I realize this is not important issue in the larger picture of the game; however, I would like to keep it, if possible.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that importing the color palette of the original pointer and using the appropriate slot for the background will give the background transparency.

When I did it originally all I had to do was trim down the original.

However I did a search within AHIII for cursor.bmp but nothing shows up for me to work with.

You can still make your own, but now you need to describe the alpha channel with either a "cursor_A.bmp" a 256 bit map with alpha,

or a "cursor_A.txt" file describing the r,g,b of the transparent color.

hate to sound dumb but I have no idea how to do either one.

Put the attached file into your aces high III folder.

Does this outright replace the default P-51 shape for all fighters, or is it specific to when flying a P-38?

It changes the cursor in game period.

this is what it looks like in AH2. In AH3 you can see the entire square.

I'm just a dedicated P-38 driver :old:
If any one else wants to use it, go ahead.

Thanks Hitech

rechecked the background color of the cursor; r=255, g=0, b=255, Hue=200, Sat=240, Lum=120

added the file.

still no luck   :headscratch:

I'm confused.

The icon for your position is still the P-51. The map shows the standard B-17 for buffs and spitfire for fighters. What is showing as your P-38?

Or is this your mouse cursor?

This should make it a little more clear. Also attached to this post is the same cursor as in this image (this one being 128x128).

I don't know how you got it to work in yours but as you can see, yours doesn't work for me either.

So I must be doing something wrong, however, I do not know what my mistake is.

I used the text file Hitech posted and my 24 x 24 cursor.bmp
background color is r=255, g=0, b=255

All I have is MSPaint to work with and I have never seen anything about an alpha channel in that program. So I have no idea how to make a bitmap with alpha.

That's interesting. I zipped up the files exactly as they are in my AH3 folder.

You did name the text file cursor_A.txt?

MSPaint may not have the complexity (ability) to work with 8-bit images, or reduce colors to a 256 count. Krita can.

https://krita.org/en/

Just save the image to an 8-bit .bmp format, which is 256 colors. Then since you have an alpha text file (cursor_A.txt) you are declaring that any instance of that color (256,0,256) will be transparent. So, you simply select everything in the background and fill it with that color.

I like to start with something that has much higher resolution, and then reduce it in the final stage. I can show you how to do this, but I usually use Photoshop. Krita has the same functionality, plus it's free.

it is saved in 256 format & the text file is cursor_A.txt, from Hitech's post.

And it still doesn't work on my computer

Then the next question is are both files saved to the Aces High folder?

On my system that would be G:\Hitech Creations\Aces High III

I may have changed it from the default folder, but you should get the idea from that where those files go.

Seems like allot of work for a cursor...I wonder what else I can make my cursor into hmm
Title: Re: P38 cursor

Anything. It only takes a few minutes if you already have a picture you want to use. The only problem is that if the picture has a lot of details (like the rivet plan sheet for the Mustang), then the result will probably be a lot of random dots. So, the less busy a picture is the better it will make a pointer. It usually takes longer to find a picture than it does to convert it.

yes, both are saved in the Aces High III folder.

the original for my silhouette came from a 480 x 480 jpeg. Opened in MSPaint & went over the image with a line tool. Saved as a 256 BMP. Used MSPicture Manager to resize down.

By the way loved the detail in your P38 cursor.

Like your cursor, Challenge  :aok

When I got the invite to the 80th and posted my cursor, there were some that liked it and said they would use it.

Now because of this post I wonder how many others will create a custom mouse cursor of their favorite ride ?

Some people know that my love of the P-38 comes from my parents, who met in 1943 on the P-38 assembly line at Lockheed. And that is why its all I fly. And why I created my cursor.

However, eventually I would like to learn The B-25H(I enjoy JABO), P-40, P-39(early 80th FS planes) and the Corsair(flying from a carrier - something different) so that I can expand my participation in scenarios. And I'll make a cursor for them as well.

One of the greatest strengths of any game, IMHO, is it's community of players.

Got a problem, just ask, and people will help. Even the "Grand Poobah" himself will answer. How many other games can say that ?
:salute to all   :old:

I may have to add a brace in the corner to act as a proper pointer. It's difficult to point out the smaller fighters now to find out who the friendly is.

when I created my cursor it did take a bit to realize where the "imaginary point", to make contact, was.
It seems to be 1 pixel to the right, horizontilly, of the upper left hand corner.
