Title: Default Elevation settings
Post by: JimmyD3 on March 29, 2021, 08:03:18 PM
Is there a way to set a default elevation on a "makeahmap" output? Let me try to explain, the 4 Corners area has some phenomenal landscape, however its any where from 5,000 ft. to 12,000 ft.. It would be nice to be able set a default elevation, say 5,000 ft. = 20 ft.. This would bring the overall elevation back into a practical range. Just a thought. :joystick:

I can add it shouldn't be a big problem.

I added an option in latest version 1.13

altitude_offset it is value in feet it is added to geographical altitude. So if you want to set 5000 feet to 0 put a value -5000 to it.

Just tried it out on the 4Corners map. IT IS AWESOME!!! This opens up all kinds of new possibilities for map terrains!

I assume, if we needed to add elevation to a map, such as the Dead Sea area, we could use "+integer" for adding elevation. Is that correct? :headscratch:

I prefer to give it to sea level optimizer since I need to have both Mediterranean and Dead Sea to be at same level... this is what the complex optimizer does.

if you don't have water bodies or you ignore the then offset is good idea

Hmm, adding +50 to the existing elevations, seems to have no effect. All 1 ft. areas are still 1 ft.. Shouldn't they be 51 ft>? Sorry Artik, I'm kind of slow, getting old you know  :D.

Since all lakes, rivers and seas need to have alt=0 the major constrain on the altitude is water bodies. https://www.hitechcreations.com/wiki/index.php/Terrain_Generation_From_Geographical_Data#Handling_Water_Bodies

So if you add 1000 feet to something but than move all the area around to 0 feed it woudn't help...

Think I've got it now,or at least I understand the constraints better. Thanks for being patient with me. :rock

Is there a way to create new water bodies by adjusting the altitude offset?

Applying a negative value to altitude_offset reduces altitudes, but seems to set the minimum to 1 foot.  Is there a way to let the altitude go below "sea level" so new water bodies would be created instead of 1 foot plains?

If I understand the limitations correctly, there is no way. iirc the DEM data does not include the submarine profile. Sorry not much help there I suppose. I would keep experimenting and see what you can come up with.
