Title: Wanting VR Hardware
Post by: JimmyD3 on May 17, 2019, 05:07:44 PM
Looking into getting a  VR setup, I am currently running an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.0GHz, and 16384MB RAM. My GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980. The question is what VR system is best suited for this setup?

Oculus has a program you can run to see if your system can run it. It will also tell you what you need to"fix/upgrade" to get your computer up to snuff if it doesnt.

https://support.oculus.com/248749509016567/

After that, its just personal preferences.

You didn't say your OS. I was forced to upgrade to Win10 to run Oculus after a clean install of 7. For me at least, Oculus dropped support for Win7 last fall.

Yeah I am still using 7, and don't really want to change.

Best Bang for your Buck is gonna be Oculus Rift. With that setup, you will run Aces High and War Online Pacific without any issues or strain on your GPU. How much memory does your 980 have?
They say that a GTX970 is the Minimum spec but I'm running Core i5 3.36GHz, 12G Ram, msi GTX960 4G Gaming and I run good in Oculus. HTC I couldn't even start up.

With some work, you can configure Win10 to look and feel like a Win98 box or anything in between. Could take a couple of weeks to find everything if you take your time and do it carefully.

I was afraid of the change too, but it wasn't as bad as I thought, not without a little tweaking though. There are still a few things that drive me mad about 10, but nothing too bad

Windows 10 has come a long way since the first versions of 2015. It's actually very good with some caveats most users don't even care or know about.

There's features I've learned to love. What I dislike the most is that with every version the settings change location and functionality. Many settings still can be made in the old Control Panel, for some reason not all. Another "issue" is to find all the slide buttons that have the ability of spying the user with the cost of lost resources caused by background activity. Agreed, some information about them might be just lost in translation, for a native English speaker the logic behind their grouping, naming and descriptions might be totally clear.

...this.  I've now switched over all my home gaming PC's to 10 - my two son's Win10 machines and they're also using Acer VR headsets with no issues. VR and Win10 have come a long way in a year.
