Title: Is there a P-51D skin for Crazy Horse?
Post by: Animl-AW on March 09, 2023, 11:07:53 AM
I could swear, although at my age memory is questionable, I had a Crazy Horse skin many years ago in AHII. I can't get to my screen shots on another drive yet,..maybe it was just something similar?

Tough to see well on the small iPhonie Balonie screen but the AH skin page lists a 352FG 487FS skin but doesn't appear to be ‘Crazy Horse.’ Personally not knowing if that’s an actual name used in WW II or just for dedicating the group and squadron I stopped reconnoitering that page after my minor find.

There are 3 P-51D skins for the 352ndFG, all from the 487th FS:

"Cripes A'Mighty"

"Dopey Okie"

"Petie 3rd"

I don't recall a "Crazy Horse" skin - in fact I'm not sure its historical.  I think its the name of a restored Mustang based in Florida?

NP, fuze.   Vraciu and I were bitten by the Mustang skinning bug a long time ago, so we're naturally interested in all things skin-related to the Pony...

I'd really love a 352nd D pony with full D-Day stripes.

That would be sharp-looking for sure, but with only a handful of P-51D skin open slots left; I'd suggest just adding the full stripes to one of the 3 already existing skins, if that would be historically correct?  The 352nd didn't begin receiving the "D" until the middle of June '44, so its possible some 352nd Ds never got the full upper and lower stripes - I think in August '44, the directive came to remove the topside stripes...

I know for sure that Cripes A'Mighty 3rd had full stripes at first.

I found some info that agrees with this, Devil.   Apparently when Preddy got his "D", full D-Day stripes were applied to it.  Only lasted about a month though, as after July 19th, the upper surface stripes started being removed.

Cripes A'mighty might be the ticket though.   Looking at serial numbers, my "Petie 3rd" came well afterwards.   Wonder if Petie 2nd had them?

The octagonal shape of the upper wing in the 3-D model is distracting.   Invasion stripes exacerbate the issue.   That's why I try to avoid them.

Crazy Horse is owned by Stallion 51 in Florida.   They give Mustang training.  I do not believe it is based on any particular wartime P-51.

Yup
That's the one,.....I use that now. Evidently my memory was flawed. Close to it tho. Thanks.

Crazy Horse and Crazy Horse 2 are both listed as TF-51Ds.   CH is a Cavalier conversion to TF-51D specs.   CH2 reached its current configuration during a rebuild by Stallion 51 Maintenance.

According to listed serial numbers, CH (Construction Number 124-44601, Serial Number 44-84745) was built as a P-51D-25-NT.

CH2 (Construction Number 122-41042, Serial Number 44-74502A) was built as a P-51D-30-NA.
