Title: Simulated Home Cockpit
Post by: Daubie on May 18, 2007, 11:45:20 PM
Hi,

I figure I'm fairly new here, you guys don't know me, yet, why not show my virtual oddball personality?

The guy that created Microprose software I remember seeing he had developed a simulated cockpit maybe madeup of fiberglass or some kind of plastic enclosure.  It looked to be just for his use.

Last summer I was to the Boeing flight museum near Seattle and one of their cockpit do-dads actually was a two seater simulator enclosure with seatbelts in the seats and a door to lock a pair of virtual pilots inside and that thing spun around, even upside down.  I bet you really could redout in that thing.

One Internet site I came across, this guy purchased a war surplus F4 cockpit parted out off the jet aircraft and hauled it home on a flat bed trailer in his backyard to be converted to a similar scenario.

So, how many here have your own homemade cardboard cockpits?

To a lesser extent I'm thinking of modifying a chair with extended arm rests to house the joystick on one side and throttle on the other side instead of just holding my Saitek AV8R-01 joystick freely in my hands.  I figure the next step in the evolution process will be the X52 and maybe rudder pedals in some kind of self contained system.  My computer desk setup area is too small as is to mount the joystick on my desk.

How do you guys do it?

Daubie

Try having a search around the forum, mate. There is definately at least one thread here with several pictures of someone who created a great 'cockpit', exactly as you described.

The modified LaZyboy and desk chair are popular solutions. There's a few folks with full simpits, and a thread in which there are pictures posted. Might have to dig around a bit, but it's around here somewhere.

Hi,

I could not get your link to load up.  I went to java.com and played their games so I know my copy functions ok.

I backtracked off your link and this one loads up:

http://airmafia.com/mafia/nsty_simpit/index.htm

That is really cool.  I could build one of those.  Mother-in-law upstairs has her oxygen rig, I'm sure she'd let me tap into her supply for high altitude sorties.  This dadburn game has me so hooked I spend way too long at sittings and my feet swell up.  I started wearing compression socks just for this game and the added benefit I can extend my blackout threshod.  LOL!  I try to walk a mile or two every day.

(If you guys ever do general anesthesia for the necessary adventures, one is prone to stroke one week following surgery.  They now have mechanical activated compression leggings they will give you in hospital to keep the blood from pooling in the legs for several days post op.)

I live near the Pensacola NAS so all I gotta do is go to the Naval Aviation Muesuem and I can use real F14 Tomcats simulators the Navy used. Try and beat that with your home made, non-government funded tinker-toys!:D

I'm guessing you have to to pay admission to get in the museum and to use the simulator while these guys built their own and use them for free, beat that

Some nice pits there.....me, I'd rather be flyin then sawin. What I did was use some 1/2inch plywood and cut 2 pieces that could be strapped to either armrest of my chair and we're just slightly bigger than the bases of my x45 setup. Strapped the x45 to the planks, strapped the planks to the armrests and away I went. Only took a few hours to fabricate nicely, then I stained it to match the furniture.

actually admission to the Muesuem is free, but the Tomcat sim costs $20(for 2 people, a pilot and a co-pilot).

That's pretty interresting, would be nice to see more pictures to figure out how it all works.. Seems simple enough to build.

In the research that I did a few years ago, one thing to note for anyone interested in building a cockpit with working switches for gear, flaps, etc.....The internals of an extra USB keyboard is your best friend. The cheapest input solution I could find.

Hi guys,

Had to stop before divorce!...

It's a real Fiat G-91 R3 cockpit. A wreck, but real. Built by Dornier in Germany, probably ex-BundesLuftwaffe, from a huge batch received by the Portuguese Air Force in the 70's.

Hope you like it, come and get it! It's all yours for 500 usd.

While the term "gay" comes to mind, you have to admire the effort one might put into playing the game.

My favorite was the skateboard with broom handle extension, complete with toe operated switches at his feet.

I think he also used coat hangers to extend the buttons on the joystick.

I laughed so hard I cried.  I wish we had those old pics.

Even if the old website, if you have the old url, is no longer accessable, Google may very well still have their cache of it, and maybe access to the photos and save to your PC.  The more info going into Google doing searches, queried various ways, yields different results, is better.  I usually wade a few pages into their listings.

If you got Nasty's simpit to load up mine should work too. It does take longer as it has a lot of pictures to load. Here are a couple from the page.

Thanks for the reply.  Maybe that's it, I need to wait a little while for pics to load up.  Nice setup your F4U, thanks for photos.  Somebody ought to compile a book, like Fine Woodworking did for workbenches.

The only space I have to make a simpit is my attic----old Victorian house.  Been wanting to remodel up there.

Glad you like my Dream Flyer. Yes it is very simple but a real pain to make work properly. A company has recently obtained rights to my patents and will be buillding a production model. So far the results are less than satisfactory in my eyes but they are remedying the problems and will have a couple of units at Oshkosh. The production units are very pretty and work very well and once the trim and throttle issues are dealt with very close to perfect. I have a yoke version on the drawing board and an entirely new gimble arrangement but they a both at least a year away. Thanks again for your comments(http://www.flightcontrolsimulator.com/site/1646834/page/870772)

Mine cost just under $200, and took me about 5 months to build in my "spare time" <---- like I have any idea what that is any more :cry

Since the pictures, I've removed the 21 inch monitor and installed a 19 inch LCD, with the extra room under the "windshield" I built a door into the windshield and stuck my printer in behind the LCD. Changed out a few speakers, and now have true 5.1 surround sound. And with this thing sitting in the other room, "da wife" knows where I am and is very content I'm home and not out causing trouble  :t
