I got word this week that September 30th is my last day as a contractor.
I have been in cable since I was 19 starting in 1979...have been in full time work without any unemployment breaks.
The last 6 years have been as a contractor when we didn't want to relocate to Denver after the merge
Turned 64 last April
I am done!
Looking forward to the next chapter in our lives..it is exciting as hell!
May be able to play AH more than the one hour a day I have been getting
Anyone know how long it takes social security to start flowing?
Obamacare here I come - catastrophic coverage at a premium - until next April .. :aok

Same age, same situation, what will be 45 yrs same occupation.
Find something to keep moving.
In our industry life expectancy after retirement is 1-1.5 yr on average.
We move move move so much that after some tend to sit sit sit, stroke or heat attack comes.
Enjoy! But keep moving.

Yup couldn’t agree more,you must find an active hobby! I was fortunate to retire early and found it easy to do nothing and get bored. That said I spent lots of time fly fishing to stay active and it helped greatly,I also train dogs for many different things like the show ring,obedience and occasionally to be guard dogs. I have a 90 pound bulldog that can do many things including protection. I used to breed and show dogs all the time,that kept me busy but those days are over as it’s just too much work so these days I only work with very few select dogs and no longer train protection dogs,except my own!
My wife has a little French bulldog that will take your ankles out if she commands it… :devil

Im in the same boat. Been in the vending business since the early 80s (when it was fun and we worked on pinballs and video games). Turned 65 last month and looking to retire Jan 1st. During the summer months I have plenty to keep me active, but the winters in New England dont leave me much of anything I want to do, its just too dame cold out! Thats the only thing Im worried about is staying active through the winters.

Social Security checks come in pretty quick. You can apply a bit early and tell them when to make it effective.

At 65 they will automatically deduct for Part B Medicare unless you tell them you don't want it.

I just turned 50 so you’re all making me very jealous.
I have been getting back into RC planes as a hobby to prepare for my older days.

Congrats Eagler. Now you can set up a full cockpit in your house and do whatever the heck you want :D That's a nice feeling after all those years.

C... I have plenty to keep me active, but the winters in New England dont leave me much of anything I want to do, its just too dame cold out! Thats the only thing Im worried about is staying active through the winters.

I waited until age 70 to sign up. Took a couple of months after I applied before the first money came in. Iron's advice is good advice.

Me: "I heard a funny one about social security the other day."
Them: "Yeah?"
Me: "Ah, you probably won't get it"
So far I'm the only one that's found that funny. :D

congratulations! I'd be excited too. Your only about 6 years ahead of me.
I'm of two minds for myself.
One - I will never be bored. I have plenty of hobbies.
Two - I worry about losing touch with the people in my little world. I worry that retirement is like the last stage of a life in a way. I feel like it signals the final chapter. I know we all gotta go, but I still feel like I'm 28

Congrats. Retired life does take some getting used to. That's one of the reasons I had to make 3 tries at it. Kinda bugged me to be sitting at home twiddling my thumbs the first couple times. Finally after the wife was able to retire in 04 I made the transition when we hit the road as full time RVers. Now I'm used to it and don't feel guilty at all interacting with folks still working.

Congratulations, let those work who have invented it. I took early one at age of 55, at the end of 2015, best decision I've ever made.
Now I have to tell you about negative aspects of retirement; we do not get summer holidays, winter vacations, days off or even sick leaves!

Wife is retired and I work from home a few hours a week now. We sold our home in Idaho recently and moved back to Texas. I tried to talk my wife into buying an RV instead of another house. She said we'd need two, one for her and one for me. :D
