Title: Palemoon: A Firefox Alternative
Post by: Skuzzy on August 20, 2013, 03:09:00 PM
For those of you who are not happy with the direction Firefox has been heading, you might want to give Palemoon (http://www.palemoon.org/) a try.  It is a spin off from the Firefox development.  It uses all the same plugins as Firefox.

This is not an endorsement.  Just and FYI type of thing.

Thanks, and yes, I've also been disappointed in the direction Mozilla has been going.

I'll check it out.

Skuzzy, I wanted to thank you for this heads up.   Also, I do not like the way Mozilla is taking Firefox.    Again thanks!

So I'm not the only one that noticed that Firefox feels as bloated as IE now.  I'll try Palemoon, thanks Skuzzy.

There's an easy solution - don't watch youtube. Don't you know that Google paid adblock makers to whitelist their 'non intrusive' ads? :)

I do not see any ads, but I have explicitly blocked youtube from running java scripts or parking its cookie on my system.

Been using this browser for a couple of weeks now.  I like it better than Firefox.  I also like the developers attitude and philosophy about it.  Hope he holds on to it.

Yes, it is a Windows only project.

By the way, if you are using Palemoon and you had the Foxit PDF plugin installed for Firefox, you need to go to the Tools->Options menu, then select "Applications" and associate PDF's with Foxit, rather than the Mozilla Plugin for Foxit.

Thanks, Skuzzy! My default browser now has changed. The only negative thing was that the Finnish language didn't come automatically, but fortunately someone had completed the translation. I hope they'd soon get localization to the same level as Firefox or Opera, or IE for that matter, making downloading and installing PaleMoon easy enough for those who lack even the basic skills in the English language.

What I like in PaleMoon is, that all the settings are in the good old familiar places unlike Chrome, which I find too streamlined. New is good, if it's done with respect to what was good in the past.

Firefox turned into a massive ressource hog, so I switched to chrome out of desperation. I like the speed and the integration with google services that I use a lot.

I will check palemoon out of curiosity.

Semp, there has to be a setting that you are missing.   I can go to You Tube or any other website and I do not get a single ad.   Maybe a conflict or something.

You might consider simply changing your HOSTS file. The one available at MVPS will block all of the ad.doubleclick ads at youtube.

Ads are part of youtube. It's how they make money. Crap-tons of it, to boot. It's rare to find a video without one, though they are randomly seeded once in a while to play without them.

Luckily nobody is forced to use crap sites like youtube or facebook. One can blame themselves if they use them.

Indeed, although I find a video hosting service like Vimeo or Youtube to be INFINITELY more valuable than any social media site. I'll close out the ads in Youtube because it's worth it. I won't even bother with Facebook.

edit:  krusty it took me a couple of years to find out that youtube has ads.  I have adfree installed since I started using firefox many years ago.
Title: Re: Palemoon: A Firefox Alternative
Post by: Chalenge on August 24, 2013, 06:58:12 PM
Yes, once you have a good HOSTS file installed the ad.doubleclick ads show up as unreachable in your browser. So what you may have thought was a youtube suggestion then becomes a blank area with text advising you that your computer cannot load the site. That's one way youtube tracks you, but the HOSTS file also prevents cookies and other misbehaviors.

You might want to look into it Krusty.

Yes.

make sure both are programs are closed.  it looks like some process might still be running in background.  so restart then use the tool to transfer if it doesnt work then do it manually.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles

in pale moon profile is located in users/username/app data/local/moonchild productions/pale moon/profiles.

mozilla is in the same place except use mozilla firefox instead of moonchild productions.

I've been using PaleMoon for about 2 hours now.  So far so good.  It appears to be fast and seems much smoother than IE.
I randomly chose 20 youtube videos and not one ad to be had, whereas before there was an ad on almost every video.
I've installed the ad blocker plus too.

Thanks for the FYI on this software Skuzzy.   :aok

My biggest gripe with Chrome, is that the latest update doesn't allow you to access the taskbar with the window up.    You have to go into the Task Manager and kill the Process "explorer", then it works.    Close the window?   Do it all over again.

If you do not mind Google tracking everything you do with your computer, and how you use the Internet, and being able to hand over anything you say or do over the authorities without your knowledge, and making money on information you freely give them, then Chrome is fine.

Hmmm,...people making money off of your efforts, while you do not get paid for it.  I wish I could have pulled off that business model.

You seem to have missed the news. The government has tapped into TOR since the beginning. It was easy through a vulnerability in Firefox.
