Title: You must be yoking! Which stick should I buy?
Post by: KD303 on September 28, 2005, 04:56:30 AM: Probably opening the proverbial can of worms here, but I'd appreciate suggestions for a good control device to buy for using with AH. Joystick and pedals. Reasonable(ish) price and suitable for a novice, greenhorn newber like me! Pref. joystick with rudder built in so I can buy the pedals later on.

Just be careful because they don't make them anymore. You'll need to get one from Ebay or someplace. There are always a ton of used but not too many new.

Short of that...

The Saitek Evo is a decent entry level joystick providing you 8-way views (easily modified for 16) twist handle rudder input and a throttle slider. Price is under $40.

Two cautions:
1. forget about the Saitek programming software; it sucks. You can program all stick assignments with the AH joystick setup.
2. spend the extra few bucks for a replacement warranty. Evo's are known to develop drift and nose bounce after awhile.

Post by: Clifra Jones on September 28, 2005, 12:13:51 PM: As DMax said, If you can afford it go with the CH gear. It sounds like a lot at first but if you end up replacing your gear every 12-18 months then the cost is justified.

I used a Saitek X45 before my CH gear and while it had some good points it had some serious bad ones for me. I am completely satisfied with my CH gear.

Stick, throttle and Pedals is the only way to fly, IMO.

Post by: Delirium on September 28, 2005, 01:58:28 PM: CH is more than reasonable, over a long haul. You'll have those stick longer than you'll have the computer, and on the rare chance the pots fail CH will repair it only at the cost of the return shipping.

Be careful using Windows 64 with USB devices (the ch manager won't work) and gameport CH devices with Windows XP (won't be able to program it there either).

he tells me the guy with the joystick had started smokin crack

now,this guy paid 150$ for the sidewinder in 1989
treated it like it was a newborne baby had a dust
cover made for it

LMAO, i got the joystick for 20$ same same G.I.

Post by: Soulyss on September 30, 2005, 12:21:24 AM: For a seperate throttle stick combo most people would say go with CHproducts or Saitek X45.. I think thrustmaster may make something too (not thinking of the cougar) but I don't have any experience with them.

Saitek was really good to me, I bought a refurb X36 and it lasted me 3+ years no problem. However there are many people out there who have had hat switchs and such go bad after only a few months, a problem seems to exsist in their quality control.

CHproducts is a bigger investment, but I think you'll be hard pressed to find anyone who has anything bad to say about them. I bought myself some CH gear about a year ago and I'm loving it.

In the single piece/combined joystick throttled I think the Microsoft sidewinder series has the best rep if you can find one. Saitek cyborg is popular as well. You can also look in thrustmaster though as I said I don't have any experience with them. Steer clear of Logitech. Many people have had bad experiences with Logitech, myself included.

Post by: uberhun on October 08, 2005, 02:43:07 PM: I have the Saitek x45. It works for me, no problems at all. Like with most things it is the luck of the draw. I like the x45 because their are so many ways to customize it for your flying style and needs. it is very versatile. All the hat buttons are programable it also has trim pots on the throttle that you can set up. I believe their are 36 different hat programable buttons and three stick sets. I set one set for vehicles, one for bombers and one for fighters.

Post by: megadud on October 08, 2005, 02:55:30 PM: MSS is teh best! I had x52 and hated it. i had logitech 3d pro and it was ok for a while. nothing like MSS though although i never had a CH stick.
