The Bear is still around?
this was an almost weekly occurance in the '70s and '80s, but it wasn't all over the papers then. I've heard of the F-14s getting so close to the Bears that the pilots would wave at each other. The US pilots even got to where they recognised particular planes and pilots from seeing them so often.
-
The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.
-
Gotta love it when they know somethings classified as "secret" but they still talk to reporters about it. :rofl
-
F-22s intercepted Bears for the first time in November or early December in Alaska.
-
Maybe thats why they intercepted it- Russkies wanted a look at their products new worst nightmare :D
F-22 is one of only about 3 jets in the whole world I'd want to fly (the other two being the A-10 and MiG-29). That thing is seriously sweet.

I used to have a video tape of F-15's intercepting a Bear off the coast of Alaska. The F-15 with the video camera was so close to the Bear, you could see the tail gunner holding up a Coke can and waving. ;)

Weren't RAF Tornadoes doing this last year? Maybe even Typhoons.

Russia is flexing its muscle.
With its 1950s aircraft.

Dont underestimate what has been an extremely successful design. Were still using B-52s as our main bomb humper.
-
Valid point, its a very capable design and aircraft.
But a great deal of what they have has detoriated badly...subs, etc.
-
Yup its an old airframe but its their range and what they carry that matters.

I think its pretty entertaining how this one type of russian bomber has been interceptd by two generations of fighter aircraft. built it right the first time i guess.

Actually 3 or 4 generations, the Phantoms and century-series fighters used to run into them too I think.

HA! I originally had "F-106" in my post intead of "century-series fighters", but I couldn't remember if it was a Dart in the pic I'd seen or not. Obviously it was, that was the pic I was thinking of. :aok

I can't remember which plane George W Bush flew, it was either the F-106 or F-102. It was a delta-wing though.

Probably the '106, they never saw combat either.
-
He flew the 102
They had a terrible development history, they didnt stay in the inventory long

Didn't the F-102 become the F-106?
-
106 from the same company but a different bird.
Lets get back to Phantoms :)
Up close and personal from a 57th FIS F4E

Of course the Navy F4Bs were there too. Although that's a Badger I believe

The F4Js got into the mix of course
(http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s199/guppy35/F4J.jpg)
And the RAF Phantoms as well. Gotta love that F4 :)

Is a tail gun a valid weapon in this day and age?!
If you want something scary here it is. I heard that Russia has paid off their debt, They have lowered their tax rates which has paid off big for them. On the other hand you have the US who has raised rates and continues to spend trillions it hasn't got. I think the cold war was won because we out spent them and they couldn't keep up. Apparently it wasn't a wasted lesson on the Russians.

IIRC at least two F-106s were shot down over Vietnam. I always wondered what they were doing there.
A beautiful huge aircraft.
-
F-102s got shot down over 'Nam, but AFAIK the DD was never combat deployed. It was meant to be a high-speed interceptor and wasn't very maneuverable. Was meant to shoot down Russian Bombers, not escort ours.
-
I've never heard of F-106's being deployed to Vietnam.
