Title: New Sick Puppy Sound Pack
Post by: Chalenge on December 06, 2019, 07:14:01 AM
Hoping to have testing completed for Christmas. Still looking for a host site.

Can you use something like google drive with a shareable link?

I think Google pushed everyone off except for businesses. I was hoping Hitech would answer up with an upload link or something.

I asked Hitech to host the download and he agreed to do so.

I've made a preliminary version available to the Pups for testing, so we can sort a ew issues out, I hope.

Oooooh, new sounds, looking forward to trying these, I am guessing they were a lot of work to put together, so thank you in advance! <S>

Some of our guys are having troubles getting the files to work. It seems that not every install of AH3 has created the \Aces High 3\Custom Sounds\Desktop folder, which is where the bank files need to be installed. I helped MWK create the folder and he put the bank files in, but it still didn't work. Not sure why that happens! I have heard of one success at least, and of course it works fine for me.

\Aces High 3\Custom Sounds\Desktop is how mine is layed out. I would think that that is the "default" setup. Dont see how it would change. Maybe Hitech could explain.

It turns out in that one instance there were two installs on two separate drives and the bank files were put on the wrong drive. FMOD is still buggy with some sounds playing once and then stopping, and I'm not talking about loops.

Are you using a sound card, video card audio, or onboard audio?

Let me know if you notice any slow downs. I don't believe you will. I am slowly converting the sounds over into a format other than *.wav files to reduce the overall size of the project. Unfortunately, my real life responsibilities are on the increase now that I've taken over my father's ranch, farm, and dairy, plus family finances. I was hoping I would be old (older) and my kids could handle all of this instead of me.  :(

I can help too.  Have three gaming machines. One with on-board sound, one with a SB X-Fi, and mine is a SB Z.

It's uploaded and just a matter of Hitech adding it to the download page.

It's not complete by any means. A lot of my latest work didn't make it in yet. So, as things return to normal for me I will continue to work on this.

Just let me know of issues you run into, or things you'd like to see (hear).

Later.

I'm getting reports that some of the sounds are throwing errors (yellow text) and that even the P-51 has occasional problems (flaps and gear sounds don't work), whereas on my system everything works as designed. Not sure what the problem is for these other guys.

Thanks for the hard work on this  :salute

Question, do I have to delete the original sounds out of the folder and un zip it to the original custom sounds folder or will re write the original sounds, I know nothing about the Fmod crap.

One more thing with this effect GV sounds or just the plane sounds

Title: Re: New Sick Puppy Sound Pack
Post by: Chalenge on January 02, 2020, 06:32:20 PM
You can zip up the old Desktop folder to save it if you like.

The whole idea of this pack is to replace all of the sounds with the sounds of the actual planes, vehicles, and guns as much as possible. Of course, some artistic license has to be used for some sounds that are just impossible to get these days. I have done what I could, but at the moment the pack is still incomplete.

In this ZIP file there are four *.bank files. You want to put those four files in your "\AcesHighIII\CustomSounds\Desktop\" folder (see attachment).'

I will make an auto-installer later, but why wait?

Thanks for getting back so quick, I did not get an attachment, just a zip folder.

The "attachment" I mentioned is the image file posted along with my instructions in my last post above. In the Windows Explorer address bar you can see the layout of the path. The other files and folders you can see are not needed, but just the four *.bank files.

I download the files, and put them in the CustomSounds folder, and nothing happened, and I tried to make a new folder with the specs you stated, but I can't use the \ key or any characters like that, what would you recommend? I do want to hear the new sounds though.

In the "CustomSounds" folder just create a sub-folder named "Desktop" if it doesn't already exist.
Drop the bank files into the Desktop folder.

Revision, am now downloading from the earlier "sick puppy sounds link"  is that correct?  The earlier one I tried was the "Banks.jpg"

109's, 110's, 190's except the D9, A20, A6M's, B17, B239, B24, B25's, B26, B29, Boston, C47, F4F, F4U1, FM2, I16, LANC, P38's, P47's, P51's, SBD5, Spit16, Spit9, Ta152, and TBM3.

Of those included I still need to go back and tweak the external "Event Cone Angle" so that you can tell the relative external position of the plane. Many of the planes do not yet have the proper guns or mechanical sounds included (flaps/slats/gear).

If you listen to the external sounds of planes like the TBM, SBD and Spit16 you will probably notice more of the planes that do not have that excellent "Event Cone Angle" applied yet, and that's because I don't yet have the proper sound bytes to add to them. Of course, I can also do the same thing for tanks, and even tankfire.

I just put my 4 bank file in CustomSounds/Desktop.  Try that.

Then fly a P51 to easily check.

FWIW I did log an hour instruction time in a TF51-D a year or so ago, and one thing I noticed was that the flap actuators  were quiet, as in your soundpack, and unlike the stock AH3 sounds.  This week I'm mostly been flying planes that are not in your pack, but I noticed that when I fly near planes that are in SPS, they seem to sound very more realistic.  Nice work!  I hope you hold up well and you get to complete your SPS pack, if that's your wish!  Stay active, it's been a big asset in my life!  :old:

Thanks! I try to stick to realism over making a sound that might be more useful (like a louder flap sound). Sure, you may not be able to tell if you hit the button, or not, but at least it's not an overused Terminator press.

I really thought I would have heard a report or two about sounds that don't seem quite right.

It seems that some of the "shut down" sounds run on a bit after the prop has stopped.  Most noticeable on the radials like the P-47M.

Also, the whine (turbo-supercharger?) in the P-38L is constant, while it comes and goes with WEP in the P-38J.  Did the J only engage the turbo for WEP?  (On my sound system the whine is oppressively loud.)

Cool sounds!  Thanks for all your effort.    :salute

I believe it's constant on both, but elevated once WEP is engaged. I'll look at it.

not sure if it's just me, but I was flying a 110 yesterday using the new sounds, and wanted to tweak the "my engine" volume down a bit, when I hit apply, I lost all engine sound, still had the wind sounds, just not the props, it's probably just my machine, but thought I'd mention.

These really are excellent though, thank you Sir!

Really do enjoy the sounds, they add so much more life to the planes. I have noticed that while most of the gunsounds are standard AH3 some planes like the P47D11 have their own sound for the 50 cals while all other P47 models use the the standard AH3 sounds.
Coincidentally also was getting this error I haven't seen before in the P47D11
(https://i.imgur.com/igulaGB.png)

I have also noticed the turbo whistle is constant on the P38L and is toggled with WEP in the P38J as someone had already said.

Other than that, haven't experienced any other bugs with the soundpack and the sounds are fantastic  :aok

sound pack is great! Appreciate your hard work. The track and engine sounds on some of the tanks are really cool as is the Spit, 38 and Pony. To note, I have noticed that a few times when a plane passes by, it sounds like the engine is starting (or quitting?). I know some players shut down their engine in a dive, but this sound seems more persistent, have heard in a variety of situations. Just FYI. As a side note, I played with that engine shut down thing and as expected, my plane slows down faster with the engine off. Which’s makes sense since the propellers is providing thrust with engine on and only drag  with engine off.

I was noticing the startup sounds too.  I'm not sure if it's on all the modified planes, but I definitely noticed it on a P51 seemingly as it came into a certain range.

Well done though, the engine sounds are so good.  I kind of miss some of the feedback, particularly with flap movement, but it's worth it for how good things sound.

Post by: Chalenge on January 08, 2020, 01:38:14 PM
I'm pretty sure there's nothing I can do about that engine startup. I think it may correct things if I take out the startup from external sounds, but then you will always hear planes spawn in with the engine running already. I may have to do it that way if it does in fact fix it, because it's not likely that Hitech would change the game just for sound problems.
Title: Re: New Sick Puppy Sound Pack
Post by: Wiley on January 08, 2020, 01:42:52 PM
I don't know what's possible, but I know if you can isolate it to just not doing it for external sounds but the internal startup is still there, it would have pretty much no impact on my enjoyment.  I would definitely find it less jarring than hearing every plane coming into range start up.

Wiley.

Hey Chalenge,  I've been enjoying your sound pack, thanks again for your efforts!  When you again have time to work on it I have a couple suggestions for the F6f-4, should you have the time and interest.  I've both read about, as well as my Dad also spoke about the black powder cartridges that they used to start the Wildcat engines.  As I recall Mitsu had modeled this in his earlier sound pack as well.  My Dad referred to the cartridges as looking like a large shotgun shell.  Also, and I don't know how you would model the sound....my Dad also spoke about how when the Wildcats lifted off you could see the pilot bending down to crank up the landing gear by hand.

Great sound pack.  I also notice the engine starts from planes as they get close to me.  And in a GV, when I shut my engine, it sounds like every plane within earshot is starting up.

Also, I have a question.  Would you post or email the FMOD file so we can tweak sound levels ourselves?

Welcome. I have one recording of an F4F using the shotgun start. One reason I didn't use it is because if you go to an airshow and see the airplanes you will not, in most cases I think, witness a shotgun start. It's the same reason that I didn't change the 262, or 234, and other airplanes for other reasons. If you listen to the F4F you can hear the landing gear being cranked by hand. I could have added the sound of a chain, but in the moment you cannot hear that so it's wasted. I believe I did add it to the Storch, and I16.

Jinx, No. The reason I wanted FMOD in the first place is to encapsulate the sounds so they could not be copied. Publishing the file as you suggest would just reveal those sounds. If you have a particular issue about a sound level you might just report it.

I lost all internal engine sounds on the modified planes with the pack.
other sounds seem to work fine. gun sounds, ect are new and working.
just internal engine sounds.

they sound spectacular buzzing around me, i just cant hear my own engine.

anyone have a fix?

managed to get it working, deleted vca.cfg and fmodsound.cfg from settings,
rebooted still nothing

then i readjusted the sound levels that had been reset to default, and bam working engine sounds.

thanks challenge, the extra little level of detail in these sounds make a huge difference in the feel of the aircraft to me.
i like it a lot.

aha i found what might be my real issue.

swapping from regular to vr mode after the engine has started kills the engine sound.
it doesnt seem to matter at what point in the flight i swap.and sound doesnt come back after swapping back to first screen.
first engine startup on a new flight is fine until the swap.

internal running engine noise appears to be the only thing effected.

works as long as you dont switch between vr/non vr versions.

i like having the auto switch so i can take of the headset during flights, but for now have just disabled auto vr mode swap.

It can be a bit picky, sometimes pictures help...

find your aces high folder> inside that you should have an empty folder called CustomSounds it is case sensitive. if it is not there make a new folder and name it "CustomSounds".
inside that folder should be another folder called Desktop once again it is case sensitive, you will need to make this folder. making sure the name is "Desktop".
the 4 files go inside this desktop folder.
the main thing is they have to be named exactly like this down to capital letters and spelling.

"\Aces High III\CustomSounds\Desktop\files go here"

and some pics to clarify>>hope that helps

Chalenge, i know you are really busy, but are you gonna add the whistle the JU-87 makes and the whistle the P-51D makes as well? eventually?

Eventually. I'm not exactly blown away by the reception the sound pack has received, so my motivation is just not there. In recording the weapons I have come to know a lot of shooters and collectors and so I've gotten back into bench shooting and reloading. Who knows what will happen?

Hey Chalenge.  Anxious to try out your sound pack but, having trouble with the download.  It shows as a jpeg with no sign of the .bank files.  I think there's a step I'm missing.  Thanks!

I got the four .banks files installed in the Hitech custom sounds file.  After reviewing all the pages of this thread, I found that first link tried didn’t produce the .bank files.  When I tested in game, the sounds hadn’t changed.  So, in my thread review, I obviously missed a step.  Any idea what it is?  Thanks for the help.  :D

Did you make the subfolder "Desktop", like in "CustomSounds/Desktop" ?  Dropping the 4 banks files in the Desktop subfolder finally got it to work for me.  The other thing is not all planes have the new sounds.  The P-51D definitely does, so that's a good choice to hear if you have the new sounds.

The Desktop subfolder is the step I missed.  The P-15D was my test choice that sounded the same.  Thanks for the help.  I’ll tune the files up.    :aok

Is there an available list of which have the new sounds?

Cool, glad you got it going Puma!   :aok  Chalenge did post a list somewhere, I think further back in this thread.
Title: Re: New Sick Puppy Sound Pack
Post by: Chalenge on February 25, 2020, 01:11:21 AM

I'm trying to find the time to get these cleaned up before adding more.

Thanks DaddyAce!  Completely read over and missed the list while reading through every page working the previous issue.  The sounds are quite an improvement in realism.

Dragon, the common sticking point seems to be that you need to make the subfolder "Desktop", like in "CustomSounds/Desktop".  Dropping the 4 banks files in the Desktop subfolder finally got it to work for me.

Awesome 50 cals in the Pony now. Thanks Chalenge  :salute

If someone wanted to revert back to the original sounds do they just remove the Desktop folder? I did a fresh install of AH3, new pc finally, so I didn't have the CustomSounds folder and I'm not sure if there was anything in there originally since I just dropped your bank files in and launched the game. I guess my question is where are the original A3 sounds stored at? I have some squaddies that want to try out the new sounds but wanted to know how to revert back if they wanted as well.

Just move the four bank files to a different folder, like \CustomSounds\backup or something. Or even rename \Desktop to \Backup and you won't have to download them again.

Why would anyone want to go back?

Perfect thanks.

Well the question was brought up so I thought I would get them the right answer.

Valid point on going back. These sounds are really neat now and with the faint raise/lower gear sounds I notice I have to use my gauges more which is pretty cool to me since I relied on the default sounds before to let me know when they were locked up or down. Haven't tried flaps or anything yet but the guns and engines, wow what a sound. Taking up some different planes tonight and through the weekend and if they are all like the pony I'll make a contribution for sure. Well worth it. Outstanding job.

Can individual sounds be customized by the user?

In AH2 I could grab one flap sound I liked from plane x and put it in plane y's folder...

Unfortunately it's a lot harder to do in the new format.  I managed to get the 20 mm sound I wanted, but wow, it literally took two months.

If you know how to use the editor you can build your own files, but without my original files your flap sound would be the only thing different from the AH3 default.

Interesting.

Is there a reason why the new format was used?   Does it add something the old method of simple .wav files did not?

I flew past a Goon using your sound pack and it sounded fabulous, btw.
Title: Re: New Sick Puppy Sound Pack

They switched to FMod because of all the features it introduces that you just couldn't have without complex programming.

If you remember the doppler shift of audio in the old system never worked right. Fly head on past my Lanc, B-17, or B24, or HTC's 262 to see what I mean. Plus, FMod allows sound files other than .wav format. The .ogg format is much smaller, so the final bank files are smaller too. Also, the FMod editor includes all the mixing features you need.

I would bet the overall processing of the .bank files for the game is much less than .wav files, which means a game that runs better.

FMod can do more than AH3 needs, which allows for more expansion and game growth.

Chalenge-

Love the sound pack! Just installed it! For some reason I had only seen this thread's title and for some reason thought this was some kind of joke where all the game sounds get replaced by the yowls of sick puppies.  :x

Getting a few of the issues already mentioned (buffet timed out) and I'm not hearing any gear or flap sounds on the Pony.
Otherwise, I'm in paradise! My favorites are definitely the P-38, P-51 (those gun sounds make it for me), Spit 9 & 16.
The Spit 16 in particular is just PURE earcandy, that Griffon sounds amazing!! Spit 9 really feels more alive with the proper sound of a Merlin.

I do wish though, that the rest of the Spitfires could have the Merlin sounds added in. I love flying them so much and the Merlin sound really completes it.

Overall, great work chalenge!

Gear and flap sounds on those are actually pretty quiet. I'm guessing hitech went with louder sounds on the generic stock sounds so you could get the audio cues. On the 51 i just watch the flaps and for the gear there are lights on the dash that will help with that.
