Hello, folks.
I've been back for a little while now, gotten a feel for how the game and community is these days, and have decided to rekindle an old flame known as the 91st Bomb Group (H)- "The Ragged Irregulars". I've already got an X.O on board, known as Zener, and we can be found on the Bishop side of the fence on vox channel 191.
We seem to gravitate toward getting some AH time in on the weekends due to real life (I work long hours during peak summer business), so eventually, when it comes to a squad/group night, it will be established at some point during the course of the weekend.
We are recruiting, with the goal of recreating the fun we had back in the day with our particular fondness for the B17 in its roll in high alt heavy bombardment.
There are a few peripheral things we need to set up, such as a website, but we're starting off just looking for a few patient recruits who demonstrate
-good sportsmanship
-good attitude, and a
-mature mindset. (18+ preferred)
As mentioned, ***this takes patience*** (I cannot stress this enough), as our missions do take time. In the past, we regularly pulled off many long missions, complete with escort squads and individuals who voluntarily devoted their time to keep us covered.
The opposing forces that have dealt with us in the past deserve equal credit for their role in helping create a lot of fun, and in many instances, they were quite effective against many of our missions. Many times, while we've had successful bomb sorties, the opposition made it exceedingly difficult in accomplishing others, resulting in a lot of "white-knuckle" action for our escorts, and some of our flights getting shredded out of the sky. ;)
We hope to foster that environment again with some new members, and perhaps some old hands that have flown with us before.
Thank you for your attention and consideration. <Salute>
-
I would just like to add that we have a blast flying these missions. If you always wanted to know how to land a bomb on a dandelion from 28,000 feet alt, ThunderEGG is the guy who can bring you to that level.
If you've never given this niche of AHIII a try, come fly a mission with us and see what it's all about.

:rofl A dandelion?! :headscratch:
Yes. Dandelion. Make one run inbound to mow down most of the dandelions; this makes the sheep concentrate where the remaining dandelions are, making them easy targets for the outbound run.

Progress Update:
X.O. Zener has devoted a lot of time and energy toward getting this group back up and running. Custom maps have been created, which are a relief for tired eyes like mine ;). A website will follow at some point as we settle on content and resources.
Hit us up if you're interested. Generally, we request that you give us a trial run for a week or two before deciding to commit to the 91st.
I'll try to get some time in during the week as my work days will allow (11 hour shifts as of late), but there is definitely time on weekends to get together and do something rather explosive. ;)
Look us up. Vox 191 Bishop

LOL, yes ya did. And that face full of 50's put two holes in my windshield, took out one of my guns and took out an engine. I was lucky to not have a Pilot Wound and able to limp it home.
I got 3 passes on you guys and only one got me one kill. You were so tight together that i had trouble getting in on that last pass and knew it wasn't going to be pretty. I was hoping to rearm and get a few more kills too.
how did ya like encountering a 262 who was at 28k ? Hehehe.
Fun stuff guys, thank you very much, keep em coming.
-

Just like old times! :aok :aok Yeah, it's a challenge getting hits in on adversaries coming in from up high. Equally challenging for adversaries to get in on a tight formation through the hail of bullets. You did good, sir. :salute

Tell ya what. PM me next time with plenty of time for me to be ready and I will switch sides and fly escort for you gents.

Thanks, sir. I read similar from another player. Much appreciated, and believe me it's fun no matter if you're flying with us or against. Love it. :aok
I can usually get a fair amount of time in on the weekends. Damn near impossible during the week due to a lot of summer overtime at work. So we'll do our best to give you a heads up if you'd like to join our motley bunch. :D :salute

Squad ops #3 against Rooks ordnance factory was a success. Lesson learned from this sortie: Take more gas than you think you need. :D
X.O. Zener was kind enough to present me with my well-earned "Rigid Digit" at the debrief as his Fortress was towed off the runway due to lack of fuel to taxi himself.
Oops. :bolt:

Never seemed to have much trouble with flak taking out my fuel. Usually my leaky tanks are due to some very good opponents.

So far over the past month, we've seen some great, albeit small missions as a few of us have rejoined the 91st, trying to bring to AH3 the great amount of fun we all had in AH2.
We're slowly getting there. Our ops night has been moved slightly to Sundays, 6pm Eastern.
XO Zener has been working steadily at providing resources for the group's use (website, custom maps, etc..) and of course we are definitely recruiting- looking for folks with patience and a genuine interest in high alt, strategic heavy bombardment. We invite you to tune in and check us out.

Welcome back 91st!
Don't see you folks in FSO yet ... If any of your crew is looking for an FSO Squad with which to link up, have them PM me, and we can have them try a test ride. All we ask is that folks do their best to communicate and execute per plan -- we are kinda pedantic about that (We do what our CiCs ask us to do...or die trying)

Getting ready to roll another Squad Ops tonight @ 8pm eastern with our heavies in the Melee.. :airplane:
We're still quite small in numbers at the moment (currently eight on the roster), so the door is still open to folks interested in the high alt level bomber aspect of AH. Fly with us for a while, drop in on our squad ops tonight (on the good side of the fence, please :D ), while we form up, make our run, and provoke a high alt fight against the the Knits or Rooks. ;)
Many of you remember our glory days in AH2, the massive formations (sometimes called "frame rate 'hell'), escorts, sometimes teaming up with fellow bomb groups like the DHBG, and some great opposition pitted against us (<Salute> guys ). We're hoping to rekindle that again...
Feel free to stop by, or if you hear of a player interested in what we do, send them our way.

Haven't flown AH in years but decided to stop by the boards today to see what was going on. Really glad you guys are making a comeback. Some of my best memories online are from flying escort for you guys with the 82nd FG back in the day. Thndregg and crew are stand up guys and I highly recommend flying with them if you get the chance.

I really hope we do make a comeback. To be honest, AH3 is very much more a "tough room" and a ghost town than #2 because the vast majority of "old hands" are just simply gone, and the newer folks never got to see what we (the 82nd, the 91st, the DHBG, the 125th, BOP,... my gosh, the list goes on.. ) did back in AH2 that resulted in an enormous amount of fun for all sides of the "fence". How many HUGE missions did we all team up with, and fight against in those days? ;) Not just solely bomber/escort runs, base takes, late-ride fighter sweeps, etc.. but a whole host of odd ideas outside the box.
Lately, we've experienced some very sporadic small-scale successes, and we'll still keep the 91st it going in the hopes it will grow again.
I hope that, soon, HTC will rediscover their subscriber base.
It is still a great game.

91st still has our door open for more members who love flying the heavies. We're on more during the weekends, so you'll probably catch me, Zener, or Stomplab on Bishop vox 191. We've been doing a lot of other things besides bombing.. We go with whatever the situation is at the time.
Very soon toward the end of the month, I'll be on vacation, so Zener will have the ball for a while. :D

Hello again, folks.
With the influx of "Steamers" checking this game out, 91st is still looking to do its part. Our recruiting door is still open for those who have a thing for heavy bombardment, and would like to learn how our our particular bunch goes about it.
Our X.O., Zener, has command at the moment while I'm just about to go on vacation this week until mid-September. We are reachable on Bishop vox 191, or you can message him here. We have a current roster of eight members. Our squad nights are held at 8pm Eastern.
We once held around 30 members (that's 90 B17's the way this game is engineered if all of us were on :D ) in our bomb group in Aces High 2, and commonly had fighter groups volunteer their time to escort our missions in the Main Arena. We're still working to replenish our ranks.
If you're interested, stop on in and hang with us for a while. <S>
See ya' when I get back.

Just got back from vacation in the real-life Mindanao (Davao City area), and just got done with squad night on the virtual Mindanao.
Had a great night with Zener and our newest member, JRiffle. Duked it out with Snailman (Lusche, I am thrilled to see you back. :rock ) and a few others as we bombed a few factories from 28K and limped home. It's good to be back. Fun stuff. :D
Welcome to the 91st, J.. <S>
-
Yeah, Snailman, great job evaporating one of my planes first pass and getting me so off course I couldn't even drop on my primary target. Good to see you back in the virtual skies, sir <S> ! Some good attack runs by those 190s - 3 of them I think plus another (F4u?). Shot the living ^%$@ out of my control surfaces on the surviving planes. Took me 20 min to land because the only way I could descend was gravity with engines off
That's the kind of missions we like. Fight all the way in, do a little something to the target, fight all the way out, and put some barely flying scrap metal back on the runway. :aok
-
I had a great time flying with you all and the fight we had with a good group of foes was good fun. Thank you Zener for taking the time to train me.
-
The great thing about this game is there are people willing to help out in every country and even across country boundaries.
As our CO (ThndrEGG) has posted a number of times in these forums, the 91st BG will help anyone wanting to learn in the area of our primary focus - bombing. We were pleased you chose to fly with us and you are definitely a great addition to our squad. <S>

Saturday, 8pm eastern, Bishop vox 191, squad night. Door is open for those who'd like to see what we're about. Strategic and tactical formation bombing, gunnery.. every mission and sortie is different. We never know what situation we will run into next, and we never know what the outcome will be. Takes a bit of patience, but the eventual run into action is worth it.

:aok Will do, sir! :D
What would be cool is if there is a proficient filmmaker who wouldn't mind devoting some time cobbling together a video of of one of our collective sorties, from several squaddie/opponent/escort perspectives. I've dabbled in video editing in my band in the past, finding that I do not have the patience for it. Some great opposition and escort pilots such as yourself, Shuffler, and Snail-Lusche would really add a lot of flavor to it. Good for all of us and good promotion for the game.
Just a thought as I'm sippin' my coffee before work this morning. :D

Well, Zoney, the reason we climb so high is that after your pass you'll have plenty of space to go... down. :neener:
I'm still working on my "You have killed Zoney" achievement so I won't be flying center of the pack. :devil
The 152 is a lot better plane IMHO for that kind of work. Not the sledgehammer guns of the A8 but nothing to sneeze at. Plus, a 152 can fly forever if you use a drop tank to get most of the alt.
-
Oh yeah Zener and I thank you for that. i had a bunch of time to contemplate my demise in my chute last time as i recall. What, did everyone get an assist on me? It was a hail of bullets every single pass.
"Z's" of the World, UNITE!!!
-
No I think that was just Thndregg's top turret minigun that was dogging your passes. I think he got the Zoney Achievement without anyone getting an assist. All I got was a couple meals of cockpit glass followed by a 20mm desert from Snailman while all I could manage was to scratch his paint. :cry
-
Are we going to participate in the FSO's ?
-
As of this moment, the "F" in FSO seems to be the sticking point for us participating as a squad. Not many of us are available during that time frame. As we grow, we may have enough people who can commit to being online when these events are held that we could participate. I'd like to see us get to that point.
-
Just grab another squad and hop on with them! the 56th just affiliated with the gunfighters. SO the 56th is keeping an aircraft maintained and ready for FSO' in case one of them wanted to drop in on an FSO event.
-
Are we going to participate in the FSO's ?
Yes, yes you are, I have decided! We would love to have you guys join in. Come on, you don't need a big squad, just a squad, there's room for everyone. And as Dubious said, contact a squad RIGHT NOW that is participating and see if they have a slot for you.
You gents need to get set up for the November FSO's, start NOW!

See ya tomorrow night. <S>

I just downloaded the game after an almost 2 year absence. Save me a seat will ya. Hope my name is still available.

Hell yeah!! Get yer' butt back in here, Magnet. I'll shoot you an invite right off! :aok :aok :aok :aok

Holy god look at all the old names.....really making it hard not to come back to AH, haven't played in years but flying for the 91st gave me my best memories of AH. Can still remember bombing in AH1.....
May have to try and scrounge up the time/money. I don't even remember what my username used to be. Boss429, Boss, for a while was WMBoss with the Widowmakers. Lane? Hell I dunno haha.
On the plus side I've been busy in school, this is my final term, graduating with 3 aviation associates degrees, have my commercial pilot's license, working on my flight instructor certificate.
Glad to see you guys are up and running! I'll give you a holler if/when I return.
-
What's this "IF" stuff? All those AV degrees and no one to kill with them... must be a lonely existence. :D
There will always be a slot for you with the 91st. Get busy raising those funds.

Welcome back to the 91st, Magnet!

Congratulations to our fellow squadmate Warborn for being such a badass gunner during squad night last night-- you and your four Rook kills. :aok :joystick:
-
I was flying in front of him to the left and it looked like he was flying an AC-130 with mini guns. Brrrrrrrrrttttttt POOF! x 4
Good job, Warborn!

Please note, if this is from the long flight with a P51D Rook following your group for 8 sectors... Be advised my wing-wiggle was supposed to be a salute to fly in formation after I ran out of ammo... NOT an easy kill from the waist gunner... :uhoh :devil

That was some good flying, Dubious. You were buzzing around like that one pesky mosquito that you can't swat but it just won't go away. You stayed close but just out of range making us split our attention between you and other cons. Wasn't thrilled donating a B-17 to your scorepad, but great tactical flying sir! <S>

Thanks sir, was a blast... I've learned that patience is the key to bomber formations grouping together. You guys were awesome in trying to rotate the "injured" group into the middle to provide better cover and not let any 1 group fall out to become a lucrative target. <S> to that alone.
1 thing you guys could try is using the waist gunners only when "ranging shots", as I've found that to be helpful in letting the con know you're looking at him, whilst not wasting precious top or ball turret ammo. You'd be surprised how accurate you can be at 1.5k out the sides with only 1 tracer going out... Small thing, but I found it helps.
Also I'd just like to salute your group for actually jumping in bombers. I know how thankless the job it is. Fighter jocks will WHINE all day about that 1 time a bomber bailed in front of or near them... yet you try and limp an injured single bomber out of your formation that's beat all to hell, home, and the fighter jocks will cream themselves over vultching your carcus either A) JUST landing, or B) as your poor bomber hull screeches to a hault trying to ditch. :bhead
After experiencing this type of behavior, I TOTALLY understand some bomb'n'bail behavior. BUT you guys didn't, so :salute and hope to see you guys soon!
-
I appreciate the good words, Dubious, and I know the rest of the 91st does too.
You're right, we don't bail unless there is some massive tactical reason we have to, and it would be a case where we'd bail even if we were the only con in two sectors. I can't think of one time any of us ever bailed just to grief a pursuing fighter. Ain't the 91st style. Mostly though, we like the fight and that challenge of getting a flying piece of Swiss cheese back on a runway.
Many times when we aren't killed or the fighter limps away, we don't know who it was we were up against, so it's a good thing now and then to be able to know who was poking us with a sharp stick and acknowledge it.
Hope to see in our sights again soon <S>

She's so purty, yet lethal. :D
We've always got one saved for folks to take out for a "test drive". ;)
Come fly with us.
PM me or our X.O. Zener for details.

The "Ragged Irregulars" have a little award system going, thanks to our X.O., Zener. I am late in issuing this one out- my apologies. :uhoh
Here you go, Warborn, for your badass gunnery. :) <S>

:rofl :aok :aok :aok
That would be awesome..
Our squad night is usually Saturdays @ 8pm Eastern, but it has been exceptionally difficult these past several months for squad members to attend. Our sorties have had some very light participation, with a few volunteer escorting from other individuals and squads in BishieLand.. (thanks, guys).
Would love for these kinds of battles to grow again in the MA. :)

Let's plan one for this Saturday night. I can advertise to various Luftwaffe fanatics and I am sure you can drum up some big ugly fat friends and high flying pony dweebs, maybe even some Jug nerds.
-
What side of "the fence" will you be on?
I gotta contact some folks on my side and throw a little tactical "strategery" together. :D
This should be good. ;)

Well, I will certainly be aiming to shoot down some bombers and escorts. With regards to country, let's just say I am flexible.

Hi ... I would be interested in joining. I cut my teeth with a couple of old Bomber Groups ... the Bloody 100 being the best. I enjoy being a Knight but have been a Bishop in the past. Would not want to have a name change though ... Like my new name .. Utah ... use to be MauMaru and BuckSgt in years gone by. Let me know if you're still looking for bomber pilots ... Thanks
-
You're welcome to tune in on Bishop vox 191 and see how we do things. Most of us find the time on the weekend to play.
Last Saturday, we did a little underdog 'hangar queen' fun with P40's against enemy late-war rides. :D Then, we set off in our B17's deep into Rookland, going after a factory at 25K, and caught the attention of a few 'orbital' interceptors, which our volunteer escorts kept busy for part of the trip.
This coming Saturday night, our fellow squaddie, TTflier, has picked the F4U1 for our next early-ride bit of fun. Should be interesting.

I was 100ShtGn with the 100th BG during the 2008-2011 period when we were Rooks. In the MA I’ve been most passionate about both flying heavy bomber missions and intercepting enemy bombers. What’s fun is that we plan missions for a purpose, being tactical or strategic. We’ll mess around in other rides to keep things fresh, but I enjoy that we never get too far from our bread ‘n butter B-17 formation flights. I’ve been in and out due to heavy real-life commitments and schedule conflicts, but I’m perfectly happy to have found a fantastic group to fly with.

i think i would like to join you guys next time out.
