Title: Extending a fighters range during WW II
Post by: fuzeman on December 02, 2020, 01:05:53 PM
I think I'm safe to say most of us have heard that Chuck, no not Chuck Norris, or Chuck Yeager, or Chuck E Cheese, probably shouldn't mention Mr. Farley, but and you might have guessed from the subject, Chuck, Charles Lindbergh, helped extend the range of P-38s with fuel and engine settings.
I had assumed it was just on the P-38 but I came across a video where a P-47 pilot says they did similar stuff with the Jug.

dag nabit I hit share and get this nonsense: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_k9ltoNQaqc" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I hit the YT link button above and this happens

:bhead  did NOT expect that  :aok

 :rofl  and it works   :headscratch:

Probably should have added he talks about this in the first 15 minutes, probably around the 13 or 14 minute area.

Piston aero engines give the pilot quite a bit of authority on the mixture controls............for better or worse.

Some pilots had the ability to read gauges and learn an engine's best mixture ratio at any throttle or prop. setting.

"full rich" is "too rich" for best efficiency but it is safe.

We can set power and rpm in AH but we can't change the fuel air mixture to increase range.

FW190 and BF109 had automatic settings you IRL could override, in Allied planes it was all manually done.
