Aces High players in the DC area! This is a thread started to plan a meeting of local players for a little get together.
This is for everyone. Please feel free to post your name and your squad here along with your interest in participating.
Also, throw out some ideas other than seeing the museum and having a drink afterwards. This should be a super fun
event. We hope to have a big gathering.
Thanks for the suggestion Scca. :aok

Too back it's not in Denver , lol .
-
I am in for the meet, only condition from my schedule that has no wiggle in it (has to be a Saturday).
I am still up for the turn around trip just to say hello anytime in the near future when I put the Mrs.' wheels back on the ground. The sooner the better, she will insist on having the roof down.... no matter what temperature is
In the spirit of solidarity for Stampf, I would suggest some type of benefit or planned volunteer event at a local children's hospital, or Veteran's Administration Hospital.
I worked on the campus of the West Los Angeles, VA and definitely met some interesting folks. I am no competition in chess anymore (never really was), but maybe there is something that local staff have an idea of what the occupants would want to do, that we could volunteer to man, or sponsor.
Health will not allow participation in marathons or walks (although I could man a booth).
-
I am definitely in. I will do a run of complimentary T-shirts marking the celebration.
A meeting is one thing, but a gathering with Computers as earlier suggested is tough for logistics as some type of conference center or reception hall must be be booked. I have a few squaddies on the East Coast, but not much closer than me in driving distance or time.
-
Sounds interesting and I'm not opposed to doing it. I'm assuming you're talking about the Smithsonian when you say museum.
DC is quite a drive for me but I could make it in about two or three hours. My condition would be that it has to be a weekend event, and not this weekend. Preferably planned at least a week ahead of time.
As for a suggestion of other things to do, if they are still showing Fury I've been interestined in going to see that.

It's a 3.5-4 hour drive for me possibly more with traffic. I would plan for Spring or Summer of 2015.
-
I might be able to make it in the spring time, 2015.
All I ask is to avoid booking anything the time the cherry blossoms are in bloom in DC as the capital is usually busy and all the hotels are booked solid.

Good Call.
I should've added that I am familiar with the area. I have family in Bowie, MD and I used to live in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia so I frequented the area quite often. In fact I will be there November 1st. :)
-
This is great guys! Reach out to your friends and squaddies to partake and help plan the event. The next scenario is not to o far off, so trying to plan around that may not be a good idea at all. Time would be too short.
But great suggestions:
- Volunteering
- Seeing a movie
- Grabbing Food
I am hearing 2015 allot, understanding that this is just a get together.
The more ideas you guys throw in the better our agenda will be for the day.
Keep the ideas flowing fellas. :aok
-
Been away from AH2 for about 2-3 years, but returning soon to action. I am approx. 2-2.5 hours from DC here in Dover DE, so I'll bee keeping an eye on this one and make plans accordingly.

Anyone around Memphis going PM me .

Here is an idea while we are at the museum. The A&S museum has a pretty cool F-4 Phantom Combat Flight Simulator. What say the highest scorer gets a prize sponsored by the group. I flew this with my son about five or six years ago and he was pretty dang good. Chip off the old block. :lol Hey, come to think of if it, he beat me. :headscratch:
The simulator is pretty cool because the roll axis rotates 360 degrees! Hang on to your hat. :x
How'd you like to take that home with yah. :aok

Oh btw, The National Rifle Association Headquarters is right down the road a bit as well. :salute
Just thought I'd throw that in...
-
Fellas, I am going to start working on a agenda that kind of ensures that we are in the right place at the right time.
To start...
Breakfast - This will be our initial meet and greet. This way most of us will be together before heading out to the museum.
Anyone can make suggestions on where to meet up, but I saw this place which is no more than a two or three miles away from the museum.

ACES HIGH DC Players Meet 201? - Meeting Date Suggestion
In order to give everyone amble opportunity to plan on participating in the gathering, I have researched a date that is pretty interesting.
I heard springtime would be pretty good time for most folks. Seeing that this time frame would give us enough time to plan as well.
So check this out.
Saturday APRIL 18, 2015 - The 73rd Anniversary of the DOOLITTLE RAID on Tokyo Japan
What think you gentlemen?

I'm not planning on booking a hotel so if the breakfast is too early, I may end up skipping it. I don't want to wake up at 3 AM just to be there on time (especially since I need to drive back home that same day).
-
Great idea. I am in the area and I love going there.
Here are my thoughts (not in any order):
1) I think that with groups of 20 or more (and a minimum of 2 weeks advance notice) they will set up a tour for you (and it is free I believe). I have been on their general tours and have been impressed by the knowledge of the tour volunteers.
(By the way, does anybody work or volunteer there? :headscratch:)
2) I think they post their upcoming exhibitions 3 months ahead of time, so we should check in February? http://airandspace.si.edu/exhibitions/coming/
3) I think that the date is about right. Weather can be good, the public and private schools are done with their spring breaks (museums get crowded during spring break), it is past tax day and I think a Saturday is a good choice.
4) The one issue that pisses me off at Udvar-Hazy is the parking fee scam. I wish that they would get rid of it and replace it with the regular admissions fee (which in DC is zero). If cost is an issue for anyone, they should plan on car pooling with someone to the museum (They do not allow walk-ins).
5) BTW a must download here: http://airandspace.si.edu/visit/mall/floor-plans.cfm
6) Did you know that there is a Hooters just down the street? Just saying. or even better: http://www.scout.me/breweries-and-brewpubs--near--chantilly-va

I can't find any information on where to park, suppose we could deal with that when the time comes though.
If this is going to be a thing, any chance we could get the thread stickied until it's over?

I am perfectly fine with any Saturday date really, but the proposed date works for me! <S>
-
Yes, my father and I would most likely come to this, We live about 4 hours away in SE Virginia. If we come, we'll end up driving up friday after work and staying til sunday afternoon.
-
I live 20 mins from downtown, but me being able to make it is a very low %%.
-
Guys,
Keep the inputs and ideas coming. This is great. We are going to have a great event.
We need to nail down the date. Does everyone one like the Saturday April 18, 2015 date?

Not that I am against a DC Meeting or anything and I think it is a great Ideal I been trying to work something out for a while for a similar east coast meet and was looking for ways to make this work. This event is held every year and always the first weekend in June there are many things that take place from Friday to Sunday along with Mock battle's , Airplane rides (if ya can foot the bill for a 30 minute ride) and this has become pretty regular thing with some of the PA guys we try and hook up each year out there and this is also a very good chance to get up and close to the old warbirds and some vets that still come and talk about the war and what part they did.
Just throwing this out and there are plenty of Hotel's in that area that would also be able to accommodate if we wanted to bring Pc's and hook up kinda like the Old AW Gatherings, It is a alot of work and planning to get something like this rolling and help from other's.

Craz you're pretty funny. You are certainly welcome to join us all for this event. We still need ideas for a dinner of some sort. You have any?
btw, this is our event not mine. Ownership is evenly dispersed throughout the group. This is your event just as much as it is mine.

Former Nazis are allowed as well. :D
We want everyone to come and participate.

I would appreciate it if we could settle on a rough scheduled with rough times. If I know the times that we are expecting to start and stop, then I know if I need to book a hotel for the night. If it runs too long I would rather spend the night in a hotel than cut the meeting short.
I also have a friend who lives in the general DC area... I may be able to stay with her, but that's a very big... maybe... and other things... ;)

i would like to participate. i can bring home made lemongello for anyone who wants some...it is for MEN (180 proof)

Completely with you on that. I'd like to have a convention where we have some classes during the day; Like how to make skins, Dog fighting techniques, Tanker techniques. Wrapping up with folks setting up their gear to fly a frame in a AH scenario, two separate rooms of course. :D

Guys,
We're making good progress here. We have a date of the event April 18, 2015, is the date.
Here are the items on our Agenda so far;
- Breakfast at Bob O's 8:00 am to 9:30 am
Bob O's Restaurant Website (http://www.bobosrestaurant.com)
- Tour of The National Air & Space Museum 10:30 am to 2:30 pm
Udvar-Hazy Center National Air & Space Museum at Dulles Website (http://airandspace.si.edu/visit/udvar-hazy-center/)
NOW! We have breakfast and we have Daytime entertainment.
What do we do next? :headscratch:
-
I went to the Dulles Annex the day it opened, so I'm sure much has changed, but when I went, they had a shuttle from the Mall to the Dulles Annex. Any chance that still exists? That might be something we could look into and hit both museums...
Just tossing it out there. :aok
-

I like that idea. Both are cool museums. :x
-
I love the giant scale Aircraft Carrier Model they have at the Air and Space on the Mall. I could stare at that model the whole time I'm there. lol.
Haven't been there since 2003, the 100th anniversary of flight. <S>
I should have added... We went to the Udvar Hazy museum back in 2003 and protestors snuck in and threw paint all over the Enola Gay! We were not allowed to see the B-29 from the upper causeway.
-
We were not allowed to see the B-29 from the upper causeway.
You can now. They put up som glass to keep that from happening again.
-
April is a bad time for me, finals way too close to take chances. I'm out.

ghost is such a wet blanket.......he will be right down the street and cant spare a few hours?

Right down the street is an understatement
-
:rofl if we are looking for other things to do in the area...the aberdeen tank museum is just north on I-95 http://www.peachmountain.com/5star/US_Army_Ordnance_Museum.aspx

The April date has not been set yet. It was a good suggestion to coincide April 18th with the Doolittle Raid anniversary, that is all. Moving that date shouldn't be all that complicated at this early stage. There may be more folks with vacation / schedule events that are similar to Ghost, but haven't raised the issue.
No matter what is done, we might as well plan for a rainy day. Anyone know if they have space or would allow an event tent?
-
Sounds like fun...however....I will 'probably' be escorting some WWII, Korea and Vietnam Vets down to the WWII Memorial from BWI Airport in the morning. I say probably because they don't setup the schedule for the year until the January 2015. After that....I am all "IN".

I'll have to pass on that.
You might as well be driving from Washington to Philadelphia.

On a good day that's two hours and getting out of the D.C. area may take an hour on it's own.

For me it works best in June or July

Ummmmm.....the museum is in the Confederate State of Virginia. I believe both the Confederate Capitol and General Robert E. Lee hailed from there. LOL. Didn't he command the Army of Northern Virginia? The "South" goes way North. LOL

I am OK with any date, however, here are some thoughts:
Late April is usually a good time in the DC area for weather and crowds at the museums.
June/July can OK but the weather can get hot and the crowds can be unreal on weekends. (Not saying they ARE, only that they CAN be unreal)
August the weather will be very hot and humid, however, the crowds will have dropped off. In fact, August is the month when you can usually get the best rates on Hotels and convention space. My sister who used to plan conventions in the DC area never had any problems getting great deals for groups in August. (B/c most people who have been to DC in August promise that they will never return in that month again).
I do not think that rain will be an issue. I think everything is in doors. (There maybe something outside - I just do not know)
I do not think that you can get a tent but they do have conference rooms there. I do not know if you can book them/use them.
I do not know if we can, but I think it would be interesting if we could get a tour of the Restoration Hanger. Here is a small cut n paste from the site:
"Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar
Many significant artifacts in the collection are in the queue for restoration. The first artifact to be restored in the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar was the Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver, the type of aircraft former Museum director Don Engen flew in World War II. The Helldiver is on display in the Boeing Aviation Hangar.
The next major aircraft project will be the Martin B-26B-25-MA Marauder Flak-Bait. This medium bomber flew over 200 missions during World War II, the most for any American aircraft. Flak-Bait's nose section has been on display in the World War II gallery on the Mall since 1976 with the rest of the artifact being in storage at the Paul Garber Facility. At the Udvar-Hazy Center, the Museum plans to preserve Flak-Bait to retain its original condition, reassemble the entire aircraft, and place it on display in the Boeing Aviation Hangar."

You may want to plan a trip to the downtown mall.
They have a 262 down there:

I am OK with any date, however, here are some thoughts:
Late April is usually a good time in the DC area for weather and crowds at the museums.
June/July can OK but the weather can get hot and the crowds can be unreal on weekends. (Not saying they ARE, only that they CAN be unreal)
August the weather will be very hot and humid, however, the crowds will have dropped off. In fact, August is the month when you can usually get the best rates on Hotels and convention space. Good stuff Error!
We still need to finalize the evening activities as well.
I know that a lot of you will be driving home afterwards. Since I consider you all friends :D I don't want you drinkin too much.
It's too bad the 94th Aero Squadron Resturant closed down years ago at College Park Airport. That would have been perfect to cap off the evening.
More ideas on what you want guys. :aok

Don't forget that April 18th will fall in the middle of the Cherry Blossom Festival...so traffic to downtown will be slow at best. Since Udar Hazy is off of RT28 way (read over 10 miles) outside of town it shouldn't be an issue. But if you did want to go downtown...expect heavier than normal traffic.

Ummmmm.....the museum is in the Confederate State of Virginia. I believe both the Confederate Capitol and General Robert E. Lee hailed from there. LOL. Didn't he command the Army of Northern Virginia? The "South" goes way North. LOL
Just ribbin' ya.

Don't forget that April 18th will fall in the middle of the Cherry Blossom Festival
It is at the back end of the festival, but it still means that traffic will be insane and hotels will be more expensive and limited.
Can we possibly delay it until the week of April 27th or May 4th? There is a film fest going on there at the time, but it will be far less busy than cherry blossom crazy.
-
Insane only if you want to go downtown in a car. Of course, parking is always bad down there so the metro is the answer.
The udvar hazy is 30 miles from DC, it will be a non issue out there.
-
We can do a lot of things, but I do agree that the downtown activities would be straining. I vote to keep the get together out in Herndon, it is more practical.
-
I don't know anything about the DC area, I'll just leave the decisions to you guys. You can be my Shepard... so to speak...

I live in Western, NC and I'm IN!

I live in Southern MD, real close to NAS Patuxent River....if my schedule allows, I'm in.

My CO.(adb) is in DC now visiting his son hurry up and get there lol

I just realized I'll be in Reston VA for three weeks in April for work related activities....likely I will have to stay over the weekend at least once due to travel policies so maybe I'll make it.

Zerstorer.... I work in Reston. FYI: You can catch the Metro about a mile east of the Town Center if you want to hit the Air Museum downtown too.
Don't drive into DC unless you "have" too. Parking is a PITA! :bhead

I might make it, sir. Pretty sure I'll be stuck in McClain VA for two weeks around that time for a work engagement and likely will have to stay over the weekend.

Hope to see some of the same faces from the 1994 air warrior con in Chantilly.

Maybe we should consider pushing back the date... http://ww2flyover.org/ (http://ww2flyover.org/)
Attend the flyover, or watch them take off and land before and after http://www.fredericksburg.com/news/military/culpeper-airport-to-host-world-war-ii-commemoration-flyover/article_a143ed3c-ed6b-5fa8-83ff-fc2df70bf2b0.html (http://www.fredericksburg.com/news/military/culpeper-airport-to-host-world-war-ii-commemoration-flyover/article_a143ed3c-ed6b-5fa8-83ff-fc2df70bf2b0.html)

Looks good. I was planning on visiting the memorial anyways. May 8th sounds good also. It just depends on what the majority have plans / planned.

The Culpeper airport is close to my dads, would love to check that out without battling the dc hordes. Just need a group conscensus.

I like that idea. Seeing them birds would make the trip that much better.

Rgr, well then I am in as well. :aok

Well fellas, we should start planning for this event again. The line up of aircraft is truly magnificent.
It is pretty obvious that not many of us will be able to attend the Gala associated with the flyover.
With a price tag of $1,500 to $25,000 a seat.
Maybe we should stick to breakfast together and camp out a nice spot at the WWII memorial for the show.
I will definitely be taking the day off work for this event. :aok
So is everyone good with May 8th? I will change the ad date and information.
-
I was thinking of going to Culpeper to see them takeoff. It's fairly close to my dads (Winchester) and I was thinking of bringing him along.
But I would be willing to gather in DC I suppose.

I was thinking of Culpeper in the morning for.the launch of the fighters, Manassas in the afternoon to watch the bombers land then Saturday at Udvar hazy
-
Seems like careful coordination is necessary here.
Someone should but together an outline that includes everyone for the gathering.
Then we can talk about that.
-
I live right by NAS Pax River, it would be like a 2 hr drive for me....whats the final schedule?
-
Okay...
We have had two options presented.
1) Meeting for breakfast and a get together at the Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum.
2) Get together for the flyover.
The guys that presented the flyover need to present some additional planning. i.e.
Where we are going to meet?
What are we going to do as a group?
When are we going to need to be where we need to be?
Throwing out a suggestion and not planning for the overall get together is not cool.
Come on an help plan based on your suggestions.

I was the one who called attention to the fly over. While I disagree with your assessment that the mentiona of it is "not cool", why spend time planing for something there is limited or no interest in. Thanks for your thoughts though.
As far as the fly over goes, it appears that being a Friday, many couldn't make it, so I would say it's off the table as the best "meet up" plan.
If enough disagree, I would be glad to spend time working out some details.
Personally though, I am planning on being in Culpeper for the lift off of the fighters, then to Manassas to watch the bombers land (at least as many as I can)
Signed (the not cool) AkMeathd

I am in for the Culpeper take-off and the bomber recovery at Manassas.
I will be in the area all weekend, so I am not opposed to meeting more people on Saturday at Udvar Hazy.
Spoke with my dad, he says he's about an hour from Culpeper down 340 or 522, I would be willing to meet anyone for breakfast in Culpeper than stake out a spot at the airport or go inside as close as we can get if the option is available. Last time I checked there was no definite plane for a viewing area from airport officials.
Then scoot up to Manassas and try to catch the heavies recover if they do. Can you confirm that all of them are recovering there too Scca?
From what I understand the museum is having a gala dinner that evening so getting to the museum on Friday might be difficult after the flyover that day. Saturday would probably be better for the group.
-
I'll contact the airports to find out what I can. I expect they would need to land and refuel at least given the flyover starts at about noon. And depending on the rules, I would think they will have a minimum fuel load for the flyover.
The Culpepper link said "a viewing area will be set up". Manassas hasn't said anything that I can find. Regardless, there are many public roads and parking lots to view from in the area.

That's what I read, Id be interested in getting as close as possible even if that means paying.
-
I live less than an hour from most of this. I'll participate in anything scheduled, just let me know!
-
Okay...
So time has expired on the Doolittle Raid idea. It's just over a month away. We need a minimum of two months for folks to prepare for whatever is set. If folks are not incline to meet for the flyover then we need more ideas for an occasion to meet on.
The floor is open for your suggestions.
-
so whats the scoop? going or not going? id like to go if people are going down. is there a date or a agenda? meet at this hotel, get drunk and tell AH stories, go to museum next day? it all works for me!
-
The first post said April 18th, but as i suspected I have to work :(
-
id like to take that weekend off and come down, but I don't want to be the only one. is anyone going or is this a wash?!
-
I have a call in to the Culpeper airport, waiting to hear back from them regarding accomodations. Thats where ill be, although i am not opposed to meeting anywhere else that weekend
-
I spoke with the DOO at Culpeper Airport, they will be letting people into the parking lot and was kind of sketchy on and not really helpful on plans to let people into it. She directed me to the Flyover directly and I have emailed them, and will follow up with a call.
I plan on attending this. I will be attending with several of my family members. If you would like to join us we will get breakfast at the Panera Bread in Culpeper at 9-10AM or so.
I have also noticed Aircraft Rides being scheduled at Manassas and Culpeper, I am probably going to purchase a ride on Aluminum Overcast on Friday or Saturday.
If you are interested in that, would love to ride with ya, PM me and we can schedule a ride together!
I will also attend any gathering at Dulles on Saturday, from 10AM to 200PM as they will have several of the flyover aircraft there parked.
If you are going to this, time to plan it out. <S>
-
whats the dates guys, ill come down if a bunch of people are meeting...

You might have trouble finding a room in Culpeper area, Manassas might be the better spot for lodging. Dulles would be closest to the museum.

Holooiday inn express i manassas still has rooms left. better hurry though.

Can't make it.
I did used to work at Dulles Aviation.
We had a remote flight school counter in the colgan building and I ran the unicom from there.

I may try to make it for a short bit. I have some work I need to do, but may be able to delay it for an hour or so. We'll chat at Culpeper.

Dengit! So CLOSE! Just getting in from work, even if I hadn't already done double shift driving duties today, and got right on the road, I wouldn't be much company from sleep deprivation.
Actually, my fear is much worse of not being able to stay awake or alert enough not to drive in heavy traffic. To all that attend, have a great day.
