Title: Dirty Dora
Post by: Greebo on March 18, 2020, 10:38:32 AM
Thank you to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin, which was originally skinned by Fencer in 2008.

"Dirty Dora" was the B-25C flown by Lt. Vic Tatelman of the 499th Bomb Squadron, 345th Bomb Group. The squadron arrived in New Guinea in late 1942 and were initially used to air drop supplies to front line troops. Later their aircraft were modified with a set of eight nose guns and used to bomb and straff Japanese airfields, shipping and other installations at very low level with bombs and their nose mounted guns. The 499th were named the "Bats out of Hell" squadron and had their aircrafts' noses painted with a large blue bat.

Having completed his tour of duty nd been promoted to Captain Tatelman was assigned to a course in radar countermeasures in Washington before being sent back to New Guinea as part of General MacArthur's Intelligence staff. Here he had another B-25D dubbed "Dirty Dora II" outfitted it with radar homing equipment and used it to locate and destroy 20 enemy early warning radars.

One of the photos Lyric1 found me of "Dirty Dora" clearly shows the splotches on the vertical tail. Also there is a photo of a formation of 499th BS B-25C/Ds with the same style of USAAF markings in the book "Warpath Across the Pacific" which show these splotches on the wings and tail. They were added to existing aircraft as well as to new production in August 1943, so as this one was flown before and after that date I could have skinned it with or without them. They don't show up very well in B&W photos unless the sun is at just the right angle.

Everytime I see this, I get excited and expect to see an FW-190 D9.  :furious

Great looking bird though.  :aok
